$30 For Grapes?! Japan Supermarket Tour - Tokyo On A Budget.
Eating Japanese food is a must but can be expensive. However the grocery stores in Japan are the perfect place for budget travellers looking to do Japan and Tokyo on the cheap. We are trying to show that Japan is a great place for digital nomads if you can get cheap accommodation.

Here's a tip from a resident, go to the supermarket an hour before they close, or after 9pm if theyre 24-hour supermarket ... you will get super discounted items from meat/seafood/veggies/fruits section... just look for those red tabs...

Very informative video. Thanks a lot! My gf is Korean and when I recently traveled to Korea, she took me to their supermarkets as well and saw a lot of ready made foods and interesting thing. Dunno if Korea rivals Japan in ready made foods, but you're right, when visiting another country I also love going to their supermarkets to see what the locals usually buy.

Loved the supermarket sweep intro 😀😀 The fruit looks crazy, so expensive and sooo big!! What surprises us is the rediculous amount of ready meals available, some of Alex's (timezone junkies Alex) Japanese students on Cambly to him that they ate a lot of ready meals, but still this is crazy haha! We've actually had the lotus root in some vegetarian dishes in Thailand, in one restaurant in particular. It tastes alright actually. We have been told not to take pictures in Georgian supermarkets when actually we were using google translate's photo translation.... Good job getting that much footage!
@TravelBeans
@TravelBeans 6 жыл бұрын
haha that's interesting. Luckily that's not happened to use yet as we use google translate ALL THE TIME in supermarkets and convenience stores. It's so handy for scanning the ingredients! Whenever I don't use it I end up getting accidentally poisoned (aka tasting fish or meat) 😂

All that sashimi has me drooling! The coolest grocery store I have ever explored was in Beijing, China "WU MART"! Floors and floors of products, most of which I had no idea what they were. It's fun to try and figure out what things are by the bizarre packaging.

It completely depends on what kind of things you want to do.. if you will be eating at restaurants or cooking.. what activities you want to do.. what time of the year you visit etc. The most expensive part of Japan, from our experience, is the accomodation. Check out airbnb for prices.. aside from that, you could probably get by with around $50 per day towards food, public transport, activities etc.

I like how you are in the Philippines but in Japan you really stand out like a sore thumb. Please be considerate about the people around you. Japanese might not show their displeasure but I assure you, you are now ingrained in their mind as a "dame gaijin". Stop touching things that you won't buy and don't talk too much!
@TravelBeans
@TravelBeans 6 жыл бұрын
I understand your perspective. However, from our perspective, we did try to be mindful about not filming other people and only ourselves in the video. It also didn't cross our minds that touching the food would be considered rude as it's pretty common to see in England.. and we did see local people in there picking things up and putting them back on the shelves, so I guess we didn't think too much of it to be honest. We are pretty friendly, polite people so hopefully nobody who was there was too offended :)

Great tip about the supermarket discounts, didn't know about that! You missed the Katsu Sando in the sandwich aisle (bottom left!), it is the sandwich of the Japanese Gods. While partaking the local sake.
