I am a 76 year old, old geezer. When I was 15 years old I built an 8' hydroplane and my dad who was a mechanic, went searching for an outboard motor for me. We found a '57 10HP Johnson in a neighbor's basement that was all green in color. I saw later that the color scheme was changed maroon and white in '58. Sweet memories of me riding with that boat and motor in the Erie Canal in Lockport New York. I can still remember the ungodly amount of oil which was a QUART in 6 gallons of gas.

I own the EXACT same engine! My dad bought it used in 1960 (when I was 6), and we've had it ever since. Great little dependable engine, though I haven't used it in many years. When it's warmed up and tuned properly, you can almost count the revolutions of the prop, it will idle down so smoothly. Good luck with it!

Very cool! I can smell that 2 stroke oil now, along with the smells of the Mississippi. Especially in the morning. Lots of fishing, hunting on the islands, trot lines with cottonseed cakes, limb lines with bluegills, camping on a sand bar with a bunch of Zebco 202's and that sudden rush of adrenaline when those 202's screamed. Thanks for the memories!

7:48 I believe it should be a 16:1 mix motor not 24 - 1/2 pint would be 8 ounces of oil. I have a ‘58 & ‘59 Evinrude lightwin and they are both 16:1 motors.. I heard it was because being so small they used copper rod bushings or like material instead of actual bearings which is why they need so much oil. I usually run all my old outboards on 16 mix… a little extra oil never hurts Great video and very nice motor you got there!

Nice '58 JW-14 - and fair price for it in that condition running. I sold one in Kentucky in similar condition, not running for $150. (I found a '57 JW13 that I wanted more because I perfered the earlier color scheme and moved the JW14 along). A couple of comments that I noticed: 1) The older OMC outboards with solid rod bearings (versus needle) need to run a 16:1 fuel to oil mixture. Typically, they also have the amounts marked somewhere on the motor (if it's a built in tank like that one) or one the side of the remote fuel cans. On this one, it's probably marked right on top of the pull starter.....well, let's see - yeah, there it is, at 7:48 - 1/2 pint per gallon..... 2) You mentioned that the vent kept coming unscrewed and you keep tightening it up. That vent needs to be open when the engine is running to allow fuel to flow down into the carburetor. If it's closed, it will create a vacuum and start restricting fuel flow after a couple of minutes. Probably why your engine stalled. It's nice to see old outboards get some press and large views here and there. All it takes is a more established channel and the "Driving 2500 Miles Across the Country" pro KZbin maneuver, and that gets her done. Nice work 😂
@WayneTheBoatGuy
@WayneTheBoatGuy Ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! With regards to 1) Both the seller and I thought this one was 24:1 - but if 1/2 pint per gallon is 16:1 - I will switch it up! I have trouble with pints/quarts etc. With regards to 2) I am familiar with venting the internal tanks - I have had problems with my Mercury which is a similar setup and that one had a rubber flap under that would sometimes stick. It might not have shown up in the video, but I would tighten the vent back down fully and and then back it off a turn or two so it was open - but not falling off.

If you ever find yourself without the mixing bottle, you can determine the amount of oil to add by (if it's expressed as a ratio) dividing the ratio (24) into the ounces in a gallon (128), the result is the amount of oil to add/gallon.

We can only get it at the marina or I can drive for a couple hours to get it. That’s why I am generous with the StaBil.

Try to grab Premium. I don’t think it matters as far as ethanol content but it’s safer in case the engine begins to detonate or knock/ping

Believe me when I say this. I have old Cruise n Carry and agua bug outboard motors. They ran in 80s 24 to 1 ratio then because of old technology petroleum oils. Amsoil has saber 2stroke oil 100 to 1 ratio. Full synthetic oil and runs better, cooler and almost no smoking. Look into it. Maybe you have. Great videos.

I will look into that oil - it sounds like it’s great!
