Also watch André the Traveler's videos (he's British, but lives in Czechia and travels Europe). He's done some great visits to various places around Slovakia. :-) Ryan Sokash of the "Kult America" channel (who lives in Poland) also did a "10 interesting about Slovakia" video about two or three years ago. If you need anything beyond that, let me know and I can recommend you some interesting videos on natural and historical landmarks, and interesting cultural, scientific and economic topics about the country. I suppose one type of video I'd recommend is people doing daytime or overnight train travel in Slovakia and reviewing the experience. :-)

Bratislava (and a lot of the other cities) has a lot of old world charm. In Bratislava specifically, if you want everything from medieval Gothic architecture upward, to Art Nouveau and Functionalist architecture from the early 20th century, you'll find it there. ;-) Don't miss the smaller museums or more off-the-beaten path landmarks, some are very impressive and help give a better understanding to Bratislava's complex history. Pity some of the old parts of Bratislava were demolished by those stupid commies after the 1950s, but thankfully, most of the old parts of the city survived. In recent years, there's some planned efforts to cover a road that senselessly cut the Old Town in half back in the 1960s with a reinforced roof, hiding it in a tunnel, and adding a park and pedestrian zone on top of the roof, to create a renewed direct connection between the split-apart parts of the Old Town. I hope those plans succeed. Bratislava does look better nowadays then when it was rather neglected in the late 1980s. It's hardly a perfect capital city, but it's been changing for the better since the return of democracy and reviving the city's self-respect via its long and rich historical heritage has been one of the ways Bratislava has been revitalized.

Nice ! 🙂 You're right about the less fortunate history... Far too often, past regimes in the 20th century put up barbed wire next to the Danube or Morava, to bar people any crossing of the border that had previously been crossed without issues for centuries. We cut down all of the barbed wire in 1989 and beyond, and when I visited Vienna for the first time in 2005 - without even a passport, barely a year and a half after Slovakia joined the EU - I knew we've put that ugly chapter in central European history behind us. Let's never allow barbed wire on borders and closed borders returning. The decades of humiliation in the 20th century were more than enough. Many good people were murdered in the latter half of the 20th century for trying to cross the border through the Morava. Today, those victims have an official memorial near Bratislava, close to the banks of the Morava river. I recommend visiting that memorial to anyone who's interested what it was like when Czechoslovakia's (and with it, Slovakia's) freedom was taken away by totalitarians. A simple memorial, but a powerful experience of visiting it, one that makes you really think that we should foster democracy and freedom instead of taking them for granted.
@slowyheavy
@slowyheavy Жыл бұрын
Yes - 1988 - if you tried to just cross the border, they'd shoot at you. 1990 - you can easily cross the border to Austria anytime, feeling almost bizarre. But once in Austria, suddenly you become a very poor person, if you compared your Slovak earnings to Western prices. 2002 - Slovaks buy houses and are the primary source of growth in the area, formerly at the end of the (free) world. And you can even take Bratislava public transit bus to Austria (Hainburg I think)
@jackblack6336
@jackblack6336 Жыл бұрын
@@slowyheavy History is very bizarre. My grandfather told me how Czechoslovakia, after the Second World War, humanitarian aided Austria with food so that the Austrians could survive the consequences of Hitler's paradise on earth. I will just remind you that many Austrians took part in the punitive expeditions of the SS divisions in Slovakia. 111 Slovak villages and their inhabitants were burned down.

I completely understand about the lag between filming and posting. You do an excellent job editing! But I wonder if you could just add into description box when your videos were filmed approximately. I am always curious what season/time of year it is. TY for sharing your adventures with us!

The latest population of the city is already 480,000 people. Unofficially, on a weekday up to 650,000. And it's a shame that you didn't visit the UFO tower, the new Downtown with skyscrapers, shopping centers, museums, the National Theater, Devín Castle, St. Martin's Cathedral and the Blue Church, Big monument to Fallen soldiers from World War 2 Slavín, the Danube river cruise...

Really surprising ! I would never say you ever visit our country. If I met you here in Slovakia, I would probably not believed that it is you! I really like the way you described our popular Slovak drink KOFOLA - something between Russian " kvas " and coca cola .-.-)) Yes it can be . For your information - comparing COKE and KOFOLA - kofola contains less sugar than coke, but more coffein than coke. Enjoy your stay in our country.

not the best choice with the hostel, that one looks more like a budget accomodation for construction workers as it's within the industrial zone, I would prefer something within walking distance to the centre rather. But I am happy you enjoyed the centre and did your research about the local things.

Thanks for visiting my city! It's indeed quite nice and it went through a major positive change within past 20-25 years. I remember coming here in 1999, when it was still a gloomy grey post-socialist city.

As a person from Slovakia, no way I would ever stay at that hostel. How did you even find such a run down place? Hope it was at least dirt cheap.

Thanks for this nice video of my city. Just one comment regarding the food. Sviečková is Czech food. The dumplings - Bryndzové halušky is slovak national food. Bryndza = sheep cheese. Slovak bryndza is also registered in the EU's Register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications.
