When you went to the crater lake, you should’ve made a right turn and went up to Lake of the woods you would’ve really liked that RV park. We’re all going there in September.

Our family lives in Newport, Oregon and camps out at Crater Lake for a weekend every year. Unfortunately, the wildfire smoke that you saw has been an increasing problem over the past decade. We have cancelled trips to Crater Lake from time to time because of the wildfire smoke. When the air is clear, Crater Lake has a memorizing, deep blue color that I have never seen anywhere in the western United States. P.S., Newport is a great place to live.

I went to Crater Lake years ago and hiked down to the boat launch. Afterwards I hiked back up and then hiked Mt. Scott. I hiked back down and drove around the lake like you did. The difference was it was very cold when I was there. That visit took so much out of me that it took me a day to recover! I, like you, am from Florida and not used to the higher elevations and cold!

Hi Robert, this is from an old video but I wanted to give you a recommendation. The next time you make meatballs, use 50% ground beef, 50%, ground pork along with Panko Italian breadcrumbs, fry them medium with virgin olive oil until golden brown. Also add an egg into the mixture of meats when kneading. Oh, and chop fresh garlic and onions into the mixture as well. I grew up in an Italian family, will be the best meatballs you ever had no need for sauce.

One of my early memories was of Crater Lake. I remember quite clearly standing on my grandmother's knee (held by her), while looking out the car window (a 57 Chevy from what my parents once said). I remember driving up and up and up the side of this mountain, and suddenly up on top where there was a lake and nice scenery (and plenty of trees). I also remember one scene quite clearly - looking at Google Earth (on the northwest side near Merriam point) I could still see what I remembered (even though that was over 60 years ago) - looking down the slope and it seemed to go on forever... down and down and down - with very few trees. We've talked that if we can ever escape Florida, we'd consider Oregon (maybe Washington or northern California). I may have spotted a niece in your video, in Bend, btw. We haven't seen her in many years, so it was hard to tell. Great video!

Goooood morning Robert! Too bad about the smoke at Crater Lake, but it's still a beautiful spot. If you ever make it back I highly recommend a boat tour--getting to walk around on Wizard Island is really a neat experience. Besides the last Blockbuster in Bend, there are lots of cool places to see nearby in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Really surprising to see the lack of crowds in Newport, maybe because it's a weekday? (You've never been to Ripley's? I have to admit they are kind of cheesy, but you have to go at least once.) Until next time, happy trails!

I run them all the time. The downside: many terabytes of video that never get used.

@@TravelingRobert Fully understand that. Currently have 2 NAS with 32TB of storage and keep running out of space. Are you still running the roof GoPros on internal battery or did you get an external power source for them. Have been testing a rainproof battery pack and hope to someday power the cameras with it. Plan is to just just velcro it to the roof.

2022 was a horrible year for fires in Oregon, Washington and Canada. It’s hard to describe the color of Crater other than a blue you rarely see. The hike down and more importantly the hike back from the lake boat launch is roughly an 80 story climb. Be prepared. Crater is also on the Pacific Crest Trail.
