Mackinaw island is my happy place. We try to go Mackinaw island every year. The fact that there are no cars is part of what makes it so special. Where else can you go and smell fudge and horse manure and somehow it just works! My wife and i were visting the island when they were filming Somewhere In Time and got to see Jane Seymore and Christopher Reeve. Good job on your video.

Mackinac Island is one of my favorites! I’ve stayed in Straits State Park before, on the lower part by the Lake. The Great Lakes and Mackinac Island are great. The reason why the lake are so deep is that 14,000 years ago glaciers carved them out. In fact, Lake Superior is considered one of the largest, deepest fresh water lakes in the world. Robert, thank you for showing my homestate off so well. I look forward to seeing next week video.

Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. 31,000 sq miles compared to Lake Baikal with 12,000 sq miles. Lake Baikal is the longest freshwater lake at 396 miles long compared to Lake Superior at 350 miles long. Lake Superior is so much wider at 160 miles wide compared to Lake Baikal with 49 miles wide. That is why Lake Superior has almost 3 time the surface area that Lake Baikal has. Lake Michigan and Huron are also larger in area than Lake Baikal.

Lake Superior is also known to be so cold that everything that sinks in the lake never comes back up. Lake Michigan is the jewel per most people but I love lake huron. So much fun to tube and ski on Huron. Watch the white caps during storms.

Stayed on island once overlooking Main St. We took Star Lines as well before, although they only ran from St. Ignace back then. Always regretted not workin there one summer when I had been offered the chance while at Michigan State Univ. Wow, they charge for everything, I use to live in the Chicago area, made it to the other side by motorcycle. I have to say, I was not impressed by the decor inside the Grand Hotel, a bit tacky. I expected grand staircases with rich dark wood, instead it looked like the stuff you use on a gazebo outside. The colors inside were hideous too, just my opinion. The bar areas and ballroom, also tacky. The barstools looked like outdoor furniture, seriously, I’m glad I passed, but I guess everyone likes something different. I can’t understand why golf carts even allowed. I can’t believe they charge $10 to walk around the hotel. It’s not like they are hurting for money charging those room rates. I bet the $450 room is looking at the dumpsters. 😂. What was the fort built for? I guess I’m going to Wikipedia now.

Excellent tour, with so many thoughtful photos. As a lifelong photographer and lifelong student of composition I really appreciate how you capture places that are naturally beautiful but can also easily be just a jumble of images. You clearly must invest many hours in editing. Careful viewers will pick up on your comments, and sometimes what you are saying between the lines. Candor is challenging to pull off without offending, so good work maintaining a nice balance and giving honest, positive representations. Just because a place is beautiful doesn't mean it can't be touristy, and just because a place is touristy doesn't mean it can't be beautiful.
