Unfortunately, some less educated Indonesians, to this date, still believe that the formation of Malaysia (Malaya + Sabah & Sarawak in the northern Borneo) was a neo-colonialist agenda initiated by USA & Great Britain. The 1st. Indon Pres. Sukarno was very mad when 2 northern Borneo regions joining Malaysia out of the internationally recognized referendum organized by the United Nations. Luckily many open minded Indonesians can move on.

Just to highlight on your confusion. 1957 - is our independence day from the colonials 1963 - is a formation of Malaysia Federation (which include sabah, sarawak, singapore n brunei).Due to certain issues brunei decided to pull out from the federation n singapore has been expelled from it. 😊

What a lack of info from the museum people. Malaya Independence Date : 31/8/1957 Malaysia Formation Date : 16/9/1963 (the combination of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak & Singapore. Later on Singapore was expelled and became independent on 9/8/1965. The initial plan for Malaysia Day was on 1/6/1963, postponed to 31/8/1963, but due to several issues and banned from Indonesia and Philippines, the new date was 16/9/1963)
