Congratulations on your new house 🇩🇰 btw ‘privat vej’ probably means that the houseowner must pay for the repair of the road, not the town or kommune. It is rare that it gives the owner the right to prevent others from using the road. Once the public is used to walk on a road, it can be difficult to take away that right again.
@thomasbaagaard
@thomasbaagaard Жыл бұрын
privat vej = it is actually private and you can stop people from driving on it. (but usually not walking) The municipality don't do anything and have no authority over it. Then you have "privat fællesvej" It is owned by the owners of the properties along the road and they have to pay for maintaining it. But it is still open to the general public for both driving and walking. and then you got the public roads. this is from Københavns kommune: "En privat vej eller sti ligger i et privatejet område, og der er ikke nødvendigvis adgang for alle. Private veje og stier ligger typisk inde i en større boligafdeling, institution eller virksomhed. Private veje er i modsætning til private fællesveje ikke underlagt kommunens myndighed. Derfor kan grundejeren uden tilladelse fra kommunen og for egen regning ændre på vejens indretning og udstyr. Det kan dog kræve tilladelse fra politiet. Det er grundejeren, der har ansvaret for, at en privat vej eller sti bliver fejet, vedligeholdt og ryddet for sne."

The fact that a road is private in Denmark rarely means that the public does not have a right of use. In fact, there are quite a few articles in the press at the moment about illegal signage and blocking of private roads in an attempt to keep the public away from holiday home areas and the like, eg in Molsbjerge and Risskov.

Generally it is fine, but given the proximity to our house, it did invade on our privacy a tad. Additionally, when we pulled our car in and out people walking would be visibly annoyed. Even though it is maintained now by all the houses that use it.

Congratulations! "Privat vej" is not what you expect in Denmark. It means that it will not be maintained by the kommune, snow will not be removed etc. All homeowners with a part in the road have to keep it out of their own pockets. We also sometimes see signs at the beach where it says "private beach", but that actually is illegal; everyone is allowed to cross that part. The only thing is that you cannot make a stop there, make a bonfire, put up a tent etc. By the way: Notice when you walk yourself and come by a house where you look at the windows: If there are things like plants etc in the windows, you actually don't really notice the people that might be inside but you see the stuff on the window sill. So if Maya feels looked at, people probably just look at whatever their eye catches first. :)
@TravelinYoung
@TravelinYoung Жыл бұрын
The private vej thing was a bit annoying precisely because it was so heavily used by the public. I can understand if it was a road somewhere that on a few houses were on that no one used. But the road was and is used heavily by the local public to get to Lyngby Sø as there is a path at the end of the street that leads to it. Because of that, I felt it really falls under a public road and they should be respondible for public safety not us.

@@TravelinYoung I live in Holte in a villa with our yard going all the way down to the forest. To enter our property you have to go 5 meters or so down a walking path that continues to the forest. The road we live on is what’s called a ‘private public road’ which basically means that everybody can use it but us living on it are responsible for keeping it safe etc. That’s fine since everybody living here is paying a yearly fee to have this done BUT in regards to the walking path that goes from that road down to the (public) forest is our responsibility which to me was quite surprising as it can entail a lot of work on cost quite a bit if somebody gets injured due to it being slippery in the winter and so. In Denmark it’s a good rule of thumb to just expect that every road and path is accessible by the public even if it goes through part of your property. A lot of people buying expensive villas down to the sea seem to not understand this and so there’s a lot of buyers remorse in those areas when buyers realize that they can’t block anybody from walking at the beach at their property and even sometimes they find out there’s a servitude on the property demanding free passage for the public from the street, through your garden, down to the waterfront. Overall I believe most find this to be a good thing though as all waterfront properties otherwise would have been blocked off a long time ago. I hope you continue to find happiness in our little country and hopefully we will see the next generation of your family here as well at some point in the future. 😊

It's not but it obviously depends entirely on your financial situation. Your ties to the country can also play a significant role especially with regards to how much the banks will require you to put down as a down payment on the property. So unless you have pretty deep pockets and only need the bank to finance up to 60-80% of the sales price (or less) it's likely going to be difficult getting a loan approval from a bank until you're at least close to getting your permanent recidence permit. This is due to the fact that it's extremely difficult and expensive for the banks to recover debts abroad in the event that you default on your mortgage and decide to leave the county so they usually take this precaution to minimize that risk.

You stayed with the same style of house, which is often referred to as murermestervilla…….usually well built and with a lot of character

Congratulations on your new house, though your old one looks so lovely (No.3 right?). I'm a Dane living in UK and know the difficulties of changing culture and leave family at home. But when that's said I have also learned how wonderful Denmark is and how lucky the Danes are to have bean born i this country. All the best in becoming Danish...

Well we didn’t own the old house, being renters we had to leave soon enough anyway. But now we own! :)
