As of yesterday what you experienced is now business class. They are bringing in real first class coaches with one seat per window with recliner seats, reading lights e.t.c in a few weeks time. The new coaches will be exactly what you would experience in a first class section in a plane. So I guess you will need to do part two of this first class video.

Few years back the Al shabab terrorist real caused havoc in Kenya especially at the coastal area & Nairobi,that is the reason security is very tight at the station.

Safer to fly especially the roads after the rains must be atrocious, and duelling work on the MSA - MLD highway means the journey isnt pleasant. My dad always drove us during school holidays on NRB - MSA route and I ended up doing a few trips myself, it can be dangerous if you're lulled into speeding but if you stick to 80-100kph and set off 4AM it's a thoroughly challenging and rewarding drive

Brilliant, i was born and brought up in Kenya, but I have been away so long and seeing things from your lenses is fun.I used the train last year for the first time and I have to admit I was impressed. A friend booked me in economy and I was horrified at the through of using economy(second class) but I was well positively impressed.none of the back-in-the-day trains with chickens and goats trying to fight for seats lol. You are right, local flights in Kenya can be expensive especially if you`re booking in the last minute.Especially KQ is much more expensive, but Jambo Jet are "fairly priced" I have to admit I have never been to Watamu, always asked myself why go to Watamu when I can go to Mombasa south coast or the north coast.Having said that, I find that Malindi is quieter compared to Mombasa and I think from what I have heard,watamu is even quieter. Thanks so much for sharing
@WhereNextFamily4 ай бұрын
Yes the train was definitely better than we expected. If you haven't been to Watamu yet you have to check it out. It's nothing like any other coastal town in Kenya. Quiet, but full of amazing little restaurants and beautiful hotels. It's like Diani 20 years ago

BTW speaking of Kenya roads..............it took me over 10 years to travel long distance in Kenya roads (last year)because most of the drivers don`t make you feel very safe. But having done it that once,I'm sure not repeating it any time soon, it was horrible. The plan was to take a bus from Kisumu to Mombasa, but when we reached Nairobi, the driver left and did not come back, we sat there till morning so I left and flew the rest of the way.That`s when I took the train back to Nairobi from Mombasa, very positive experience. Again going from Nairobi to Kisumu was horrible, the journey took 11 hours so I arrived in Kisumu past midnight. I thought "ok it can`t be too bad, kenyans (my kenyan family included)travel by road so I decided to do it again Kisumu -Nairobi................almost missed my midnight flight although I left Kisumu at 9am. So for me road trips in Kenya is a no-no for the near future. thanks for sharing your SGR experience

@WhereNextFamily3 ай бұрын
There is no security in train stations in the Uk. Sometimes there will be a police presence but no bag checks or queuing. You walk in the door and get on the train. Sometimes there’s barriers where you have to scan your ticket before it will let you on the train but often you can just jump on and buy your ticket once you’re on the train.

Accent sounds British-Canadian

@WhereNextFamily5 ай бұрын
Personally I disagree on the comfort side. I found it very comfortable, and lots of space to love around that you don't get on a bus. It's also much much safer than taking the bus. I know the train is not within everyone's budget, so of course in that instance then the bus is the obvious choice, but personally I would pick the train over the bus 10 times out of 10

Great review Adam I would feel the same about the shuttle bus 🫣 so just to confirm you prebook SGR online before going to the ticket counter in the terminal? I reckon the SGR is good if you’re headed to Diani but Watamu it’s probably better just to fly 😅
@WhereNextFamily5 ай бұрын
Thank you 😊 yeah sometimes you get a responsible driver but unfortunately a lot of the time these guys are on the clock and they do this route so often that they go into autopilot. Yes, you book your tickets online, then collect at the station on the day (give yourself an hour before your train). Tickets sell out so I wouldn't advise trying to buy on the day.
