I have met some one time when I was in Xinjiang. They have nothing to do with the PLA or PVA, except for the calling of reinforcements or alerting the authorities. They rode gallantly on horseback with only rifle and Dao sword, small canisters of water and satchels of rice. The Tajik people have defended the borders of China for generations dating back to even Han Dynasty, fighting barbarians and separatist groups. I have hardly seen a fellow Han Chinese as patriotic to China as the Tajik people. They defend the homeland as first line of defence against terrorists. They alert the troops when foreign troops enter Chinese territory. Tajiks even alerted the PLA when Indian soldiers entered the Doklam region. They are forever China’s heroes.

@@Marie-fx2qp I wish we did, but we don't get along that well. Long story short, power for the region has shifted throughout the centuries from one ethnic group to the other. For the past 250 years power has been with the pashtuns and in this time pashtun rulers have tried to pashtunise the entire region through force. In addition to this, almost the entirety of the taliban are pashtun. Since the taliban are terrorists this doent sit well with the rest of the country.

These people are Wakhi but the Chinese calls everyone living around Tashqurghan Tajik. I am also Wakhi living on the other side of the border in Pakistan. Rasekam and Yarkand were part of Hunza state before 1963 border settlement between Pakistan and China. Anyways thank you for this beautiful documentary

They are not Persian. Only Tajiks of Tajikistan speak a dialect of Persian. Chinese Tajiks speak a eastern iranian language related to Pashto/Yagnobi and Ossetian aka the Scythian/Saka languages. Also Chinese Tajiks are NOT related to Tajiks, it is just a name. "Despite the name by which they are known in China, the Tajiks of Xinjiang are not the same as the Tajik people (who speak the Tajik language). The Tajiks in Xinjiang of China, are an extension of the Pamiri people, a different Iranian group who speak the indigenous Eastern Iranian Pamiri languages. So what's becoming clearer is that Sinjiang has a variety of ethnicities, among them Tajiks. I'm presuming that they speak their own languages, while some may also speak Mandarin as well -- or perhaps not.

*Xinjiang. Also most of the civilians speak Mandarin and their own dialect as a second. Travelling to Xinjiang as a Chinese person is no problem at all since language is shared and a high speed rail can get you to Urumqi from Beijing in just over half a day.

Most elderly, who aren’t from Mandarin speaking regions, can’t speak Mandarin well. My whole family is Chinese and only my mom can speak mandarin well since she was born in a big city. My grandma can’t even understand mandarin and I can’t understand my dad when he speaks mandarin 😂

Ok guys , these are pamiri people with pamiri language (sarikoli and wakhi) that's why tajiks don't understand their language and they don't understand tajik - they call themselves tajiks because they know about Pamirs from Tajikistan because most of the Pamiri people live in Tajikistan they think that we are tajiks - they don't live with tajiks that's why they don't know that tajiks are different ethnicity and language- these people sing tajiki songs but don't speak tajiki, I'm pamiri too, I learned tajik language at age of 5-6 at school We speak at home like these people it is different than tajiki it's like pashto language, pashto and pamiri both eastern Iranic language sounds different from tajiki-dari-farsi. Mr. He could have done better, actually, a lot better, as a guest in a Tajik family. I could point out quite a few, really, but he'll learn in time. However, I do think it's important to point out that Mr. He should have in bare minimum learned the simple phrase "Assalamualaikum" means "Peace be upon you" to greet the Tajik people, especially the family, he was an honorary guest. I am sorry, They speake in their native ancient language, which is belong to iranian group of languages and apperead prior to Persian, that is State language in Tajikistan. They never did speake Tajik because they preserved their native old tongue - other than Tajik Persian of Tajikistan language. These small Languages are known as Pamiri languages and preserved in Eastern part of Tajikistan too.

They speak Wakhi pamiri language, a language spoken by roughly 50k people in Taxkorgan xinjiang, neighboring Gojal region of Hunza valley ishkomn, ghizar in Gilgit-baltistan,in wakhan corridor of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Tajiks from Tajikistan are also Eastern Iranian and they used to speak the Eastern Iranian language of mainly Sogdian but it was later replaced by a different Persian language. The Pamiris lived in the mountains so they kept their eastern Iranian language

Home of apricots and unusually mild-mannered cats! The kids seemed very lively and healthy- it always cracks me up in these shows when a bunch of little kids mob up in front of the camera and make faces. It's so funny, and also it give me hope, that they look so vivid and smart and outgoing. I don't always like children! I get the idea that internal tourism might be a really really big thing in China, if it isn't already. If formerly obscure villages become more accessible and prosperous, but still manage to keep some local character and not become generic as we tend to do in the US. People say: "Generica", right? I'm imagining at this moment something I saw in another travel show, where the nice fruit in that village is not exported, but picked by the tourists... I can really imagine staying in this place for a few quiet days when the apricots are ripe, and just getting as much tea and bread and apricots as you can hold! I might get some apricots once a year, and they aren't straight off the tree!
