You can definitely walk into town from the cruise port and I think the cruise ships docks there later because of where they are coming from but I believe there are some that come earlier in the day. My take on it is that the ships stopping in Victoria (which is beautiful) are doing so more to satisfy the Passenger Vessel Services Act rather than provide a port of call on an Alaska cruise. Therefore, they are picking times that get them back to Seattle at the optimum time. That's why we chose to depart from Vancouver BC - all our stops were decent timing. Princess has been doing Alaska for a long time. I remember in the 80's & 90's when my job in Alaska had me in and out of the Anchorage airport weekly, I would see their desk and tours. With that said, we chose Holland America's Koningsdam for our Alaska cruise. I like the ship and the line's enrichment programs and it was absolutely perfect! I don't know if you mentioned it in the other vlogs, but I believe Alaska has the most varied demographic of all cruises. Seems multi generations of the same family travel together for their one-in-a-lifetime experience.
@tiaunawhite98593 ай бұрын
I had to google why Victoria is such a short time in port for every cruise that goes there.. it’s due to PVSA guidelines, the cruise lines need to stop at at least 1 foreign port before returning to the original US port

But you need about 3 hours and during the day. Plus if you want to live there it rains from about Oct to March non stop. So if you like rain come on down. Summers are great. geetings, i live here in Victoria, i cannot believe the lack of information at the port. literally 50 steps from the ship is a city transit bus stop, for $5.00 you get a day pass and they run until 12 to 1 am. Go on to playstore down load the app for the buss, or, google any point of interest and hit the directions button for easy transit information you can go to everywhere and back to you ship for 5 bucks. yes its bird poop because we rarely get rain in summer, always get the Halibut from Barbs, STAY OFF Johnson and Patricia from Douglas to Quadra that is the infamous open drug market and although not dangerous it is a vacation buzz kill with all the zombies milling about. it is a small town you can walk from the water to Becon Hill Park get an ice cream and walk back in an hour, bikes are great if you have good knees (we have hills, they can be knee busters)

Just to comment on the short port of call time here in Victoria and as someone who 1) lives here and 2) works in the cruise industry - it is correct that the ships call Victoria only for the Passenger Vessel Services Act or Jones Act. As I have always understood this means that ships only sailing from a US port to other US ports need to call a foreign port for a defined period of time before reentering the US port. Some ships do call for the day, but it is less common for sure!
