Great video, and really good points! Here's two additional: 6. Crime, homelessness and drug abuse. And it's not just downtown, unfortunately. As a 6' 200 lbs guy, I've been yelled at or threatened one too many times, Even some tiny woman accused me of stealing her drugs, screaming at me. And some guy was following my wife and panting while she was jogging, which was the worst amongst her other experiences of catcalling and such. Again, none of that happened downtown, where you'd kind of "expect it" (which is really sad to say, like it's justified). 7. (Or 6.1.) Because of all that, it's no place to raise children. Despite being advertised as a family-friendly city, no - it's not. Especially in this pandemic as I had to carefully scan the playgrounds for needles.

Hi! Great video as always and I’m glad you love it there! It is a really wonderful place! I live on an island myself (Anglesey, Wales) but as you know there are two bridges and we are well connected! The one thing that puts me off is the travel aspect. We are currently looking at Vancouver but Coquitlam… so we are near the city but also surrounded by the parks and walks etc… Recently though, we are looking at the east side for the first time, can you or your other half suggest places to look at near Toronto that are a little more green space (I know there’s St Catherines, everyone goes on about but I’m aware that it’s a little like Blackpool near Niagara Falls? As much as I like Blackpool, I wouldn’t want to live near somewhere like this)! One more thing, we are looking at flights both to Toronto and Vancouver. When I visited Vancouver from Manchester many years ago, I used Canadian Affair and upgraded to business class I think as there was more room (which we need)! Which airline is your go-to? And what time of year is best? I’d love to come October time again… but would just like to ask you for your opinion 🙃 Thanks!

Having travelled a lot in the US, we often hear "How do you stand those frigid temperatures up there in Canada" I was always tempted to say that we had milder winters than they do! So I checked. Turns out that the average January temp in Victoria is HIGHER than the the AVERAGE temp of all but twelve of US states! An update! 1) Since this video was done Nov 2021, we actually had a very rare White Christmas here in Victoria! We had family visiting from Toronto (First time in two, years) and they were shocked as Toronto had NO snow over Christmas! 2) I hope you've learned how to say 'TU-FINO ' by now! :)

My husband and I are east coasters but have been in BC for about 10 yrs, we moved to Victoria 2 yrs ago.We enjoy the city but I do agree it is hard finding a social group, I am far from settled mind you the pandemic didn’t help. I just wanted to pass on the following information as it changed since your video. Update Harbour Air direct flights between downtown Victoria and Tofino and additional capacity on flights between downtown Vancouver and Tofino. Both routes get you there over the traffic and in under an hour. As well here is a tip you might not be aware of many locals with hope the ferry’s to Seattle or to Port Angeles and fly from their locations. Bellingham Wa is another airport that seems very popular. I think so many people are so use to hopping on the ferry to go take in a concert or theatre production there is not a big demand in Victoria, I find that frustrating since that means ferry cost and hotel. Canada can be bit strange concert venues are limited. Growing up in Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island, we would have to travel to Halifax 5 hrs or to Toronto or Montreal. Canadians are use to travel for sports and entertainment. It’s not uncommon in some areas to drive 1-5 hrs for you children’s sports games. I hope you are a bit more settled in Victoria and I wish the best.

As a BC resident my whole life its interesting to hear your perspective of Vancouver and Victoria. I find that so many people unless they've been here aren't aware that winter in BC is much milder than the rest of Canada and many parts of the US. Its annoyed how many people outside Canada seem to think all of Canada is super cold. Some even think it's cold all the time. Jimmy Carrey once joked that all American text books said about Canada was that its a desolate wasteland of ice and snow where mounties patrol and to beware of polar bears and flying hockey pucks.

when people hear I'm from Canada, they assume I am prepared for the cold winters that last SIX MONTHS in New England. I tell them I'm from Victoria. Get a blank stare in reply. Then I tell them, it's like Seattle, only not as cold. That's how the Americans understand it, although, I admit, sometimes I have to tell them how often we got snow while I was growing up (once every ten years or so) And they still have a hard time believing me. My daffodils came up last week. We had a freeze a couple of days later. The tulips are just coming now and the apple trees won't bloom for another fortnight, to give you an idea of the contrast.
@OldTechNerd
@OldTechNerd Жыл бұрын
It's actually quite funny that one of the reasons Americans think it's so cold up here is that on their News channels weather maps, for the border states they show their temp in Fahrenheit and Canada in Celsius. It's a balmy 75 degrees in Bellingham and North of the border in Vancouver it's 24.. they just see the map and go "Jeeze it's cold up there..brrr"

Good video Emily - being from Victoria I can't say you're wrong on these points. Some people get claustrophobic living on an island. I have a friend who couldn't stand the fact that he couldn't just get in his car and drive anywhere in North America at the drop of a hat. So he moved to Edmonton... Ok then! The night life is decent if you like pubs and restaurants as you mentioned, but maybe there's only a couple places where you can even dance - if that's still a thing, lol. Covid has changed a lot and it's a tough time to get a real sense of what city's are all about or will be about. I have found in my travels that except for the big cities in Canada, Victoria is far more of a seven days a week downtown than most, such as Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, etc. Weekends are just as busy as weekdays - it's not like the core or central business district empties out after 5 pm and on weekends. Last thing - sorry, maybe I should get my own blog, lol - one thing that'll you'll love or hate about Victoria - ( and you've mentioned this before) less chain restaurants and stores, but a great selection of local, innovative places. You just don't see those flashy, large seating restaurants that you have in TO or Vancouver - instead a lot of small places that only accommodate a few dozen. Pre-covid it was always a challenge to find a place that could accommodate work groups.
@EmmeSait
@EmmeSait 2 жыл бұрын
That’s such a good point actually - when I was in Toronto this past month I forgot that so much of the financial district/PATH shuts down at the weekend, whereas it’s just as busy everyday in Victoria! Edmonton is an interesting choice 🤔 That’s very true! I much prefer the small, local scene Victoria has :)

The last time I visited Victoria, I got into my car and drove around the coast, all the way around, then through Saanich and back. Somewhere around Sidney, I realized, if I just decided to just keep driving and go home, that was not an option. It was October, the winter storms were happening, the ferries were closed. I was trapped. Can't live there. Just can't do it.

Born and raised in Victoria, presently living in Chicago-land, via Regina, Saskatchewan. Just loved your descriptions. All things I know and have experienced. Brought back many good memories. I desperately miss Victoria. I have always said, it's not if you like Victoria/island, its if Victoria/island likes you. I have to say, I disagree with the "small townees, but only because I went to a smaller town, and missed the "big city feel." lol pretty subjective. What I do know, is I miss it, I miss the slower pace, the outdoor stuff, the food/restaurants, the local wine. I also miss the social circles I had there. The other places I've since lived, have never really established the same. But one thing is, when you do have friends from Victoria, or meet people else where from Victoria, there is that instant bond - don't know how to describe it, something that need to be experienced to really understand. Keep up the great work, and letting me reminisce through your videos. Cheers!!! PS: As a child, I would stay on a cabin just off of Schwartz Bay on Piers Island, and had a "pet" seagull that would always come and hang with me when i fished on the dock. Called him Marvin. Also had a harbor seal always visit, which we called Sammy.

The wildest thing is that in Victoria the notion of distances is so skewed. As example, we work with a developer in Langford and are ourselves moving to Saanichton. The Island is not even close to the craziness of Vancouver, yet. Langford, Sooke, etc would be considered 'close' to Victoria by those from Vancouver. In Vancouver if you live in a suburb now 1-2 hours of travel to work is normal... where as Langford to Victoria cresting 30 minutes is a big deal on the island.

Well everything you listed is not a con for me haha. I don’t like nightlife or big cities, but also not too small, I love the ocean, love the character homes, I don’t need to go to the mainland often, etc. we are moving from the Fraser valley in the spring hopefully. Just finalizing a few details. I do think the ferry will bother me sometimes. One thing I learned is if you have a doctors appointment on the mainland, the ferry is free. Our GP is here so that might work. Otherwise it’s very expensive.

Once again great insight into life in Victoria. While I'm still waiting on my visa to be sorted so I can move there, I did get a chance to visit a month ago and after exploring as many areas as I could in a week inc. Langford and Saanich I couldn't think of a reason not to move. Within minutes of arriving and walking around the harbour it felt perfect - beautiful mountain and ocean scenery to admire in all directions, an abundance of hiking trails and so many super friendly people in the cafes, bars and shops. I'm sure it's not perfect and could see myself the main issues like rental prices and ease of travel (trips back to the U.K) - but it absolutely fits with the lifestyle I'm looking for so now I have extra motivation to make it happen this year 🙂

Temperature isn't everything - also consider humidity and wind chill! 5 degrees Celsius at 98% humidity with a strong wind off the Pacific ocean can feel colder to some people than minus 15 with low humidity and no wind. Three seasons is certainly accurate, but it varies from year to year. Some years fall/winter lasts September until "June-uary" while other years spring/summer is March until September.

Interesting take on Victoria. I've lived here almost 30 years and come from a big city. I agree with you for the most part. Unfortunately with the development the natural areas for those that love the outdoors is QUICKLY disappearing. I've seen whales but not as easy as you made it appear. Better be carrying a pair of binoculars if you want to see them (and even with them, they aren't as close as some say). Things have gotten MUCH worse with transportation. Ferries are full days (yes DAYS) in advance of sailing. People here have been without doctors for several YEARS. Toronto is MUCH easier to get medical treatment. People here in Victoria have asked (for those that still have them) to see their doctor and they get an appointment, in 2 months! You are right with the weather, although we have gotten more snow (weeks) over the years when it used to be days. The problem isn't the snow BUT in snow removal. It used to be "just wait and it will melt in a day or so". That's no longer the case and Victoria does not have the snow removal equipment that it needs. If we had equipment like Toronto, snow would not be an issue. But it is and people here do not have snow tires for the most part so driving with them on the road is an experience in frustration and fear. All that being said, it is a great place to live IF you are retired and want the slow pace and don't have any problems with TIME. Island TIME. If you like the fast pace, consider somewhere else. Speeders stand out like a sore thumb and the police always catch them because they see them from a mile away. I get it, you need to get somewhere in a hurry, but that doesn't happen here. Good HONEST video though. Thanks for sharing.

I just came back from vacation in Victoria from Toronto. I have never been before but I had lived on the eastern side of BC years ago and have travelled to Van city. I was in absolute awe at how beautiful, clean, fresh and friendly Victoria was. It felt like paradise and I immediately thought about how I would love to live there. I started looking at rentals and property and I was surprised at the price considering that Victoria is basically the size of Halifax. The prices aren't as bad as Toronto but similar to Toronto's market 8 years ago which is still way too pricey. I was also thrown off by how early the shops close. I am thinking I'll just have to keep vacationing there for the time being but it really is an amazing place. I am not a fan of Vancouver city especially after living in Toronto for as long as I have so I really didn't know what to expect with Victoria or the island but it's completely different from the rest of the province and it really blew me away.

Agree with you on cost of living and ease of travel. I have not flown international from here, but I find the ferry experience with a car to be very stressful. Also agree about the one highway in/out, which became a huge issue when the Malahat was damaged this past winter and there is no detour. Government studied detour options, and just decided not to... It's a problem when our population keeps increasing but we're not building new infrastructure. Maybe not on your radar, but I would also add to the list the homeless problem, opioid crisis, one of the highest crime severity indexes in Canada, lack of 21st century public transit, obsession with social justice, protests about old growth logging blocking highways, protests about indigenous issues smashing statues and throwing red paint everywhere. Also, everyone acts so compassionate about housing crisis, but then they block new housing from being built. Average housing price is $1M and everyone votes for the socialist party....

I started wondering about all those things when I thought about how lovely it would be to live there after a vacation. As a Torontonian I thought that the social landscape may not be a great fit for me and that I would likely have a hard time meeting people on my wavelength. It does seem pretty radically to the left which definitely exacerbates the addiction/homelessness problem. For now I'll stick to the toilet bowl that is Toronto.

This person could make a video about folding sheets and I'd listen for three hours. That tells you the skills she has for actually making Victoria interesting. Bare facts is that Victoria has the best winter weather in Canada, and basically that's it.

I have a ??? Van lifer, permanent RV resident, Marina living??? I've always thought Victoria would be a great retirement van, RV, Marina environment. NO SNOW(really to speak of). I've lived in North Van where it rains non stop from November to March....(not a fan) Sooooo rain within reason seems doable. And no extreme heat. I've always thought of Victoria of being spring& fall... With a week of winter and a week of summer Thrown in. Id love a preview of permanent RV living/Marina living options...... With golf, hiking options. I have a friend that lives in a fifth wheel under the Petilla bridge in Surrey along the Frazer River for going on ten yrs. In a permanent RV site with about 25% transient sites. I just don't like Surrey. Ooooooor that horrendous freeway. Was thinking maybe Victoria. Give me the GOODS... Yay or nay? Been out of BC in AB since 2002. THAT ferry though.... Gahhhhh

Look up a map of crown land in BC, practically only 1% of the land is available for development. Much of it is used for natural resources, is an environmentally sensitive area, or belongs to Indigenous people. Opening up new land for development would be a complicated series of negotiations and compromises.

I love Victoria! I moved here over a year ago after living in Vancouver for 5 years. Before that, I lived in Toronto for 2 years of college. I was tired of the big city life so Vancouver back in 2015 felt like a small town compared to Toronto. Sadly, it had grown and changed a lot in 5 years and it no longer suited my needs. I moved to Victoria for a way better job and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I do miss the diverse food scene and the city vibe back in Vancouver sometimes but I feel so at home in Victoria. Met my boyfriend in Victoria too so that’s great. I usually joke that we shouldn’t tell people how great it is here though otherwise they’ll all flock here and it’ll just become another Vancouver haha
