I am a zipped hoodie girl. I can’t fly without one. I use the hood to cover my eyes when sleeping and to keep me warm. If I am not cold I can roll it up into the hood part and use it as a pillow. I also use it as lumbar support because plane seats cave inwards and off no support for my lower back. They also make a nice pillow to sit on if the seat is caved in to far. I think Airlines wouldn’t have so many complaints if their seats were actually comfortable. 😂

When traveling in Europe I always pack a top sheet because the beds usually only have a duvet, no top sheet, even in summer. I line my suitcase with the sheet, pack my belongings and then wrap the excess sheet around suitcase contents. This really helps with a good night's sleep.

Dr bronners makes a travel size. It can be used for just about anything. I wash clothes, water containers, makeup brushes, body wash. I always throw one in my liquids bag.

And for the electronics: whatever electronic you carry in your purse and carry on, put the cords for that device, INCLUDING THE NECESSARY CONVERTER/TRANSFORMER/PLUG, with the device. IF your checked bag gets lost or if you have a long layover or unexpected delay, you will need these items. Of course they make your purse a little heavier but that's ok.

When gettng money out of an ATM, specify an amount ending in 35 or 85 ( if possible ) so that you get at least one each of 5, 10, 20 euro notes. Some ATMs allow you to specify which denominations to receve, but if is usually not obvious

Good tip about knowing how to contact your country's embassy in any country you are in. Even if that country is close enough that you seldom even think of it as being a foreign country, really! Write the address and phone number down on a piece of paper, not only on your phone. Here's a tip: if you are mugged, as I was recently in downtown Detroit, they might get your phone as well as your wallet and ID. You need to know where to go to get replacement ID so you can cross the border to get back home! Especially if you've just had everything stolen and you find yourself in downtown Detroit with no money and no means to prove who you are!!

Laurie, pilots (retired now) wife here too. We JUST got back from two weeks in Italy. A couple of things to add: on the loooong day back to Arizona from FCO, my Apple Watch and hearing aids both went dead. I should have probably taken them off on the 9hr flt when I slept to save the juice. Also, I had a pair of VERY comfortable sandals that I’ve worn all over Israel with no problems but forgot about all of the cobblestones and hills in Italy. I immediately got blisters from them and never wore them again after one use.🤷🏻‍♀️

Laurie, I love your tips and have travelled alone, female, for over 60 years! Please let everyone know that if you miss your flight or it gets cancelled, the airline will likely cancel all the rest of your reservations without notice to you. This just happened to me with Alaska…they had problems and cancelled my return flights, first class! with no notice. They gave me the “this is standard.” explanation, and barely found me seats to get home, but what a hassle. You need to reconfirm your flights immediately or they will sell them.

I carry/wear a travel neck pouch with my passport and boarding passes. I don't care if I look like a naive new traveller. I was eating in an airport cafe in Austria. A woman and daughter sat down at my table and left before I did. When the waiter picked up their tray, their passports were there on the table ! So, as soon as I get through all the check points, I put my passport in my neck pouch. Once on the plane, I put the pouch into my purse. As soon as we land, I get the pouch around my neck again--some countries check passports on the way out--and I do not want to lose track of it.

Modern hair tools are almost always dual voltage. I haven’t used a converter in over 20 years. Just check the label. Also check the electrical in the country you are visiting.

So many electric items like hair dryers and curling irons these days are dual voltage. Check yours..if they say 100/240w or dual voltage, you only need the adapter to fit the appropriate outlet.

Watch those hydration packets. Some have a lot of sugar. Also, I noticed the ones I have, the B12 in it is the cheap form that we don't metabolize as well. Just take some methylocobalamine B12 if you are deficient. We're wondering what to do when we get off the plane, we think it's 4:30AM, it's 10:30AM there, and we can't check in until 3pm. You said you take a nap--but where? Or do you mean once you get into your room? Good tip with the snack idea. I fast, so I'm going to be totally messed up LOL. When do you take medicine that you would normally take, say, first thing in the morning? Gradually shift it or keep it at that time whatever it is locally (like, it'll be 2:30pm there but I usually take it at 8:30am)

Hydration packets are not classified as food or medication. I have taken hydration packets on planes It is not a liquid, it is powder form, so it doesn't count against anything. I have brought it in my carryon and checked luggage. It is packaged in individual serving sizes.

I go to my bank before an international trip to get smaller denominations of the international currency. And when I return I store the leftover change/bills until the next trip if it’s a country I travel to frequently. I basically keep a starting cash “float” for the country neighbouring mine in case I need to travel last minute and if banks aren’t open.

Great tips, as usual - I would just add, don't take too much cash if going to London. It's pretty much cashless these days - so you won't need as much as you think. Also, I would caution against using your US credit card on the Tube - much better to get an Oyster card, which if stolen or lost , will only set you back the amount loaded on the card and won't give a thief access to your bank account. Yes, you'll look like a tourist as most Londoners tap in with a credit card, phone or watch, but who cares! Good tip to take two adapters - and one more thing would be to go to a local store when you arrive and buy an extension cord as many of the outlets are inconveniently placed! I also take travel hangers - never had a hotel in London with more than 4 hangers- not enough for two people!

I keep all the coins from the previous trip so I have money for pay toilets or street musicians right off the bat. Last Spring we drove along the coast of Brittany and Normandy and half of the places we stopped took credit card and half were cash only. I was ready for both. Best vacation ever.

Great tips Laurie. I always carry baby shampoo (for my eyes) and that has replaced my eye drops. (replaced my prescription eye drops with this step) Panty liners & personal wipes & mole skin, and no eye makeup until I get to my destination. Hydration on the flight & my go to drink ginger ale/cranberry juice as a treat. All your tips are spot on, especially the safety tips. We're rescheduling our international travel, but sometimes there's a "plot twist". And I just realized my "international" collection of umbrella's needed to be donated & only kept one that was sentimental/useful. Safe travels !

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie my issue was rosacea of my eyelids. So my ophthalmologist suggested I wash my eyelids first thing in the morning and then at night. It has worked well for me and I was able to ditch the Restasis drops. Haven't needed anything for dry eyes (even flying) with this treatment.

There are travel CPAP machines that are so compact and don't require any water to operate. My husband has one so he leaves his main one at home and packs his travel in his personal item bag and he doesn't notice a difference in machines.

I was travelling yesterday. At boarding some carry-on suitcases were being checked TO THE FINAL DESTINATION. One woman was only asked if she had a lithium batteries she said no and they checked her bag to Madrid and not Dallas her next stop. She had medicines in the case. So BE SURE MEDICINES ARE IN YOUR SMALLEST CARRY-ON AND ALWAYS ASK WHERE THE BAG IS BEING CHECKED. WILL IT BE TO YOUR NEXT STOP OR FINAL DESTINATION. Did you go on the Viking Basel to Amsterdam cruise? I'm leaving a week from tomorrow to go on that cruise with a pre-stay in Lake Como and After Stay in Amsterdam. I can't wait! I have purchased some of the items that you have recommended including the carry-on suitcase. This is a tip for those of us whose ankles swell after traveling on an airplane (mine never swell at home). I put a hard sided carryon suitcase under the foot of the mattress and sleep on it. When I get up, the swelling is gone. It is the only thing that has worked, and I have been to Europe several times. I also wear compression socks on the plane and during my tours too, but the suitcase under the mattress is the only thing that has worked consistently for me. I also take a Magic Eraser to clean my white shoes. They get dusty with all of the tours, especially the cobblestone streets in Europe.

The eye drops are especially critical if you wear contact lenses. My regular lenses are monthly, which means I clean them every night and replace with a new pair the first of the month. So it is very expensive to lose a lens!! When I travel, I use daily lenses instead, so if I lose one, it's no big deal because there will be a new pair tomorrow. If you are a lens wearer, be careful to buy the correct single use eye drop packages - some are for use only with contacts, some are for use only without. You really do not want to use the wrong ones!

Another "hack" for hair appliances: buy them there! If it's a one-off trip, donate them to a thrift(charity) shop before you leave. If you travel frequently, then keep it 😊 My hair gets curlier in Europe's damper climate, so styling tools are pretty much useless. (I actually love how my hair gets on its own while I'm there.) Oh wait, I don't use them at home either 😂

I have decided that a carry on bag is just too much trouble for me. Lifting it in the overhead is difficult. So I now will only check in a bag and have mostly hands free on the plane. Less stress. How often is luggage lost? I have an AirTag in my luggage and hopefully that will help to find the luggage if lost.

Lost luggage doesn’t happen often but the reason we fly with a carry on only is if you are connecting to another flight, it could be a real problem. That has happened to us twice and because we had our carryons, we could run to the next gate and not have to worry. If you’re flying nonstop then it’s not a huge problem to check your bag.

I have the same level 8 20” carry as Laurie. It’s been to 4 European countries in the last few years. No problems. I only do carry on only. I did have to gate check it due to a smaller airplane twice. I don’t fly on a basic airplane ticket. I do upgrade. Hope this helps.
