One more hack. I used to work in the travel industry. Pack a piece of paper in your bags that has the dates of your flights as well as the airline and flight numbers. Add your email/and or cell phone. The baggage and lost bag staff folks are mad busy. Anything you can do to get your bag returned to you pronto is a plus.😊 Regarding shampoo and other liquids- if you place Saran Wrap or other thin plastic beneath the bottle cap and then screw on the cap. It makes any bottle leak proof. I’ve been doing this for years.

Oh, and one more thing. Our family friend, who flies a ton business with emirates for his job had Dora the Explorer stickers on his TUMI luggage. Since he doesn’t have any kids and it was totally not on brand for him, I asked him why he had kids stickers on his suitcase. He said no one has ever tried to temper with his suitcase, or steal it. Thieves are more likely to assume there’s children’s clothing or toys, and nothing of real value etc. in the suitcase.

My husband and I are very frequent travelers, so it’s really not a surprise that we’ve had a few times that one of our checked suitcases didn’t arrive, but we’ve never had both delayed. So, we each pack 2-3 days of underwear, socks and tops in a packing cube and put it in the other person’s suitcase. That way, we at least have a few days worth of clothes until our bag shows up.

Smart idea for couples traveling together! For me as a single, I always pack a change of underwear and an extra shirt and sometimes a pair of yoga-type pants into my backpack/personal item bag. These can double as PJs, and serve as a change of clothing in a pinch. That bag also has a week’s worth of my medications in it an an organizer. So if my bag gets delayed or ($Diety forfend!) lost, I’ll be able to make it a day or two. Learned this one when my kid was a toddler and our plane was delayed overnight while our checked bags went on to our destination (ON CHRISTMAS EVE!) Of course this has never happened since …. 😂

This TP hack may sound as if it’s verging on OCD, but I’ve done it for years and it works. Grab a roll of TP, a pencil and a few small elastic bands. When you’re sitting around some evening watching TV do this: Start winding the TP around the pencil. When you get a few winds, it will be firm enough so you can remove the pencil. Keep winding until you have a roll with a diameter of about a 50 cent piece, or a bit smaller (whatever size you like for purse-size, actually). Pop on the elastic band to keep it from unrolling. Repeat this until you have re-wound the entire original roll. You will be surprised at how compact these mini rolls have become compared to the large original roll. Store all your mini rolls all in a ziplock bag, and transfer one or two to a small snack-size ziplock to keep them clean and intact in your purse. I usually carry one roll, together with a small hand sanitiser and a pocket-size soap leaf dispenser in a little baggie. These mini rolls, BTW, are really easy to pack. You can drop them into any tiny space in your bag, or fill your shoes with them.
@bevricker48129 ай бұрын

Hi Laurie. I've used a lot of your tips in the past - thank you. One thing I do, and have told my friends to do, is put something on the bottom of your checked suitcase so if it's coming towards you on the carousel with the bottom facing you, you'll recognize it right away without having to wait to check the handle for your piece of ribbon. I found this out years ago by covering a small tear on the bottom of a soft-sided case with a four or five-inch piece of duct tape. (I no longer have that suitcase - I have a hard sided one that I painted dog paw-prints on the bottom.)

Love this and the comments! A few other ideas for y'all. 1-collect stronger carry out bags from places like Garbanzo's/Tokyo Joes to pack BPA locking food containers in to eat during flights (eg Snapware, doesn't allow food to squish; also great for leftover meals); 2-different sized zip lock baggies (we rent houses/apts and often have leftovers to take to next destination); 3-strong suction cup hooks in case there's not enough hanging space in bathroom; 4-nylon waterproof beach blanket that packs small; 5-write your contact info on bright card stock, laminate, place inside luggage in case lost. You can also leave copy of itinerary for luggage to find you; 6-a backpack carry-on with several outside zippered pockets - designate each pocket for specifics so you know where everything is (Kroser Laptop Backpack; love the look but zippers slide easily, fasten with anti-theft zipper pulls); 7-Travelon Anti-Theft East West Cross-Body Bag that can fit into backpack or checked-in luggage; 8-two reusable grocery bags for groceries, beach, shopping; 9-thread interior security clothing straps through anything you can, and if you have a zippered pocket inside suitcase use a small lock to secure it to keep theft to a minimum; 11-headlamp for dark streets or if electricity goes out; 12-corkscrew for wine and safety at night; 12-space saver bag for dirty clothes; 13-a few dryer sheets to keep luggage fresh; 14-travel sized PooSpray for rooms that need help; 15-pack necessities and anything you need for 2-3 days in carry-on in case luggage is lost; 16-the last 3 trips we've taken, things have been stolen between check-in and arrival; 17-colored hair ties; 18-goody baggy that's saved our vacations (electrolytes, aspirin, tylenol, anti-histimine, Bragg's ACV for upset stomach and sunburn, aloe vera for sunburn); 18-mosquito repellant; 19-Lifestraw bottles; 20-laundry pods. We have ongoing Xcel spread sheets of items to take for specific destinations (Beach, Europe, Skiing). The lists don't change much but allows us to see what's missing and file report with airlines/travel insurance company asap. Happy Travels!

Pro tip- bolt snaps are much better than carabiners. Carabiners can easily snap loose or break, causing things to fall off by accident. I used to put a carabiner on my checked luggage but have had them break or accidentally fall off and then the airline worker accidentally put it on someone else’s luggage (saw this on the carousel). Bolt snaps do the same function as carabiners but rare to pop off by accident

I'm loving the tips! And your video's :). I always try to travel as light as possible, I'm afraid my luggage gets lost and I can't lift heavy. I was so happy I only brought a handbag to a week long trip, because we had to check-out early and had to haul all our stuff through the city (no storage available). Recently been on a trip for a few months with only hand luggage. I'll share some tips that I've used, probably a few that you mentioned in a video, because people keep asking me how I do it. Basically it's puzzle, play tetris, minimise the amount of packaging a product has and use items you're already bringing for a second function. For short trips: - Toothpaste minis are way too large, I put a bit in a lens container (on both sides on my week trip was enough). You can try at home if it's enough for your trip. - Get a flat waterbottle. The standard round ones take up so much space. I love the ones from Memobottle. - Take a look at the (toiletry) bags you are using, do they take a lot of space when they're empty? - For a two day trip I put some micellar water on a reusable cotton pad, let it dry and reactivate it with water. For longer I fill a perfume spray with the micellar water. - Decant liquids into easier "puzzle" bottles with less packaging (looking at you perfume bottles). For long trips: - I buy shampoo and shower gel at the destination when I'm away for a month or longer. All my favourite perfumes and face cream are sadly also discontinued, so I pack these. You can fit so much in the liquids bag if you organise it as a puzzle, so you make use of the empty space between the products. I could fit 32 products in there last time! Even when some where big and an annoying shape. - Suitcase is a puzzle as well. On the zip-up side there are usually crevices that can hold small items and socks. - Use your clothing as protection for your souvenirs, then you don't have to add additional materials. - I use my hairclips to keep cords together. I need them both anyway. - You can use towels, bags or clothing to protect your laptop. A bit long, but I hope it helps some of you!

I hang a bag (like your recommended tray table bag) on the plane for easy access, it always has face spray, lip balm, hand cream, hand sanitizer in tiny bottles. It also has mint, tissue, wet wipe, glasses wipe, dental floss (tiny one, I keep refilling myself), iPhone stand, ear pods + straps (same as yours), old style noise cancellating earphones (for long flight, Australia is far from everywhere 😅), iPad, battery charger and my glasses case. It’s a bag with multiple pockets! Multiple pockets are great for putting things in groups. Tissues and wet ones are Tempo brand. They are small in dimensions, 6 to 8 pieces per packet. It’s enough for 2 of us, all the way from Australia to Singapore to UK. I carry a spare pack each in the carry on suitcase for peace of mind. These are the items I take every trip, so I remember exactly what they are. I don’t need a list anymore. Plus I use an old ziplock bag to hold rubbish mid flight, e.g. used tissue or wet wipes, or ice cream packaging (if it was offered). Rather than throwing them on the floor, it’s yucky.

I’ve always done this. I take a set of underwear and socks, a shirt and a silk sleep shirt that weighs nothing and folds down small. Plus essential toiletries, like toothbrush, toothpaste, comb and all purpose lotion, in my personal bag. If you ever get stuck somewhere and have to stay over in a hotel, as I have had to do a few times, it really comes in handy!

I always pack extra clothing, pjs, and depending on destination a bathing suit and flip flops, etc. I learned to do this after 1st time my luggage was delayed and didn’t land with me! @@susanmeredith4957 I also pack a bathing suit in my hand luggage as well as a Sarong. It can be used as a scarf on the plane ( I always wear a scarf because I get a sore throat from air con easily) and depending on the destination it might be the only "clothing" you need during the day.

5:44 I learnt from another passenger on a vacation in 2005, put the crossbody at the bottom. Of the backpack as most good backpacks have enough pockets to hold the passport, wallet, ticket, etc then you can have a mostly hands free boarding. One of my friends sewed a custom backpack to wear in front. So she was 100% hands free. She had a backpack and a front pack.. her purse was tucked in the bottom of one so that she could pull it out at her destination.

Way back in the 80's, when Banana Republic was an import/travel store, I bought their "photojournalist's vest". It's an awesome garment, made of khaki with 25 different sized pockets. There are all sort of spots in that thing designed for items like ID, film cannisters, notebooks, pens, etc., which have been easy to repurpose for items I need. There's a large flat pocket on the inside of the vest in the back that is great for documents, inside breast pocket for wallet, just all kinds of great spaces. I never travel without it; it makes a purse/crossbody bag completely unnecessary AND it's damn hard to steal anything out of it since so many of the pockets have zippers, buttons, or snap closures. (The pocket for ID is on the breast and has a transparent front so your ID is visible AND a velcro closure so it doesn't fall out.)

Hi Lori, I love all these tips however, I just wanted to point out that my uncle who also is a pilot like your husband told me either wear a money holder under your clothes or a bag strap on your shoulder because if a thief wants to ride by on a motorcycle or run by with a knife, they will in some countries slice your flesh right open so that they can cut the strap of your bag to steal it. So he informed me best to just wear it on your shoulder and if they want to take it, let them it’s better than being being cut open by a machete, or conceal your money elsewhere on your body. Be safe, everyone!

Everything else is already packed. I keep a hotel door lock, laundry detergent sheets, a tiny clothesline, a cooling cloth, a travel umbrella, first aid kit, toiletries kit (a new toothbrush restocked after each trip), bivy bag, mini sewing kit, and a travel Bible. I usually only pack 3 outfits, as I will wash laundry nightly in the sink and hang dry overnight/2 days. I tend to wear thin layers and no cotton, so things dry quickly. This packing style is also very handy if you need to go on an emergency trip. The last thought is, if you have a dedicated setup, you are less likely to forget something.

I have small rectangle glow in the dark stickers I stick to light switches, doors, my book light. Got a sheet of them in a dollar store. A space saver for you, I like to have a warm hoodie with me but it is bulky and takes up too much room in the suitcase so I drape it over my shoulders with the sleeves in front. On the plane when I need a neck roll for comfort or sleeping, I roll the hoodie from the bottom leaving the sleeves out and wrap it around my neck, if the hood is left out it can go over the head for warmth, it is a very cozy way to snooze. Now I have the hoodie for warmth on chilly nights where every I am going and it serves a couple of functions along the way. Oh and if it has a pocket in front, this is a great place to hide your phone or passport when going through security so they won't be grabbed by someone else and you don't forget them and leave them in the tray. Happy travelling✈

For cords, I use small fabric covered hair rubbers bands / hair ties that I pick up at the dollar store.

I purchased waterproof belt bags for our last beach trip. They worked out perfectly. We were able to keep our valuables on us without getting them wet.

Updated info, more airlines are making you combine your purchases airport items to still make it only (2) items when you board. United, Hawaiian and American have been on top of this especially if you are in the last groups (5-9). They are watching for all bags.

Thank you for all the helpful tips. I just returned from a two week Christmas market trip and wore my Ecco Soft 7 waterproof Chelsea booties every day. They were so comfortable and kept my feet warm and dry.

They are such great boots for the chance of rain and walking all day! Yay

With the coat in the trash bag hack, I would combine that with the carabiner - or just TIE it - to connect it onto my other bag. Started doing that after I left my favorite (and expensive!) packable raincoat on a plane once. I’m ADHD and I’d leave my head behind if it weren’t screwed on, as my mom used to say! LOL

Love all these gems. I love the hanger on the curtains in a room, but my go to was putting a coffee filter over the vent (it would help with any lingering smells in the room) Not everyone is old enough to remember the coffee in the filters for drip coffee, but my sensitive nose always appreciated it. And now I have Glen Campbell in my head, singing "Wichita lineman". Merry Christmas Laurie, and enjoy time with your SONshine.

I did my handle marking by wrapping the handles with two contrasting colors of cord, and it worked great except I should have wrapped both handles so it would be visible from more angles. with the new TravelPro suitcases, I plan to sew on cloth wraps. a person in my hometown invented a flexible rollable splint, which your phone support is based on. which means, if something bad happens, you could use the phone support for a splint. Merry Christmas. my town's holiday basket drive delivered to 260 families this year.

I don't know of this is a hack, but I tend to use an extra compression packing cube to put dirty clothes in. Then if I'm traveling between hotels I can still compress all my clothes down like I did at home before my travels. Packing an empty cube doesn't take up much space, and then I also don't have a loose laundry bag full of clothes as I'm going to new locations.

Oh yes, if something you do makes packing easier, it's a travel hack.

I make luggage handle wraps. I sew them out of bright, unusual fabric and they Velcro on. Our mission team has baseball ones so we all match. I also made some with numbers for the equipment bags.

Great tips! I take the anti-bacterial wipes in a couple of plastic baggies too. I also do the spare outfit and pajamas along with toiletries/make up in my personal bag instead of carry-on for the same reason you do. Just in case. I also take a mini size or travel size flashlight and that come in handy also.

Also if you get 6 small vacuum/ compression storage bags 🎒 for $14 ( the small bags fit 4--5 reg. Bed pillows in 1 🎒) so 6 small bag for YOUR carry-on is probably enough

One thing I do, most people have black or neutral cases so I bought an obnoxiously bright case (I'm too lazy to deal with case covers), makes sure nobody can take it and say it was an "accident", and also I'll see if they do try take off with it. I can see it coming round on the carousel thing. Also I just think (and I may just be making this up in my head) it might help not go lost? Like, if the case is bright and they see it one minute then don't another, bright is easier to notice than a sea of black. Lastly, if I'm meeting someone, I can be like "just look for the obnoxiously bright red case"

I think the same way. No one is running off with a bright colored suitcase. Mine is teal/turquoise color.

@@angelaguerin5175 this whole theory got proved recently lol! I was traveling to a place allows 2 hold bags so one was bright red and the other was grey. The red was fine but grey was lost and I got it back 3 days later with some items missing...

I bought the terrazzo tile print luggage from Monos for this very reason. Super unique and not easily confused by other travelers as their bag.

I’m an International Flight Attendant with a really great hack if you hate to have to iron your clothes when you get to your destination!! Buy a wardrobe bag. Ask your dry cleaner for many, plastic, dry cleaner bags. Place each piece of clothing on it’s own, thin, wire hanger. Put a dry cleaning bag over each hanger that has only one garment. When you get to your destination, I promise that you won’t have to iron a thing! Add to that, unpacking in the hotel room is wonderful when all you have to do is hang your garments…no need to transfer to hotel hangers!

It’s a great idea, IF you have an available hunk to carry it for you - I find garment bags very hard to travel with

I pack alcohol or antibacterial cleaning wipes and wipe down the tray on the airplane…..I have seen people put dirty diapers on the tray after changing their babies.
