THING TO NOTE: That stretch that he does in the beginning only applies if you're already warmed up and/or actually play often. If you do that cold or inexperienced, you could tear something. I would do that stretch and "shake it out" between warmups. Remember, he was a marching drummer and a lot of his warmups come from drumline warmups where they would literally play for HOURS a day and HARD. Beginners and average joes should be careful of that first stretch he shows you!

Thank you KZbin for adding reduced and increased speed options for videos. The reducing speed to .5 is particularly helpful for me in seeing/hearing exactly what he's doing starting around 3:19. As far Travis, the stretches at the beginning and warm ups themselves seem to all be very decent.

Anyone who says he's a bad drummer and that you're better needs to get their heads exams. He's not overrated, honestly he deserves everything he accomplished great drummer. Makes every blink 182 song better anyone who hates on em does it because he's an easy target. I'm not even that big of a blink 182 fan I'm just stating the truth
@ThatCheapDrummer9 жыл бұрын
Christian E More than anything, the reason behind criticism against him has to do with comparing him to other drummers. But, I totally agree that, when in comparison with the likes of Mike Mangini, Blake Richardson, Steve Gadd, Benny Grebb, Matt Garstka, etc., Travis is nothing.
@bobywade5179 жыл бұрын
+ThatCheapDrummer Well how do you know? Do you play? Do you know what aspects of his playing make him nothing compared to them? How do you determine that? Just because the other drummers play more complex things and are in different bands doesn't mean they are automatically on another level and Travis is nothing.
@ThatCheapDrummer9 жыл бұрын
Christian E Yeah, I've been playing for a few years (and love it to death!). I never said he wasn't a solid drummer. He sure knows how to keep time and make a simple but effective groove that fits a song he plays. I was just saying purely from the technicality point of view, he isn't too crazy. Sorry man, didn't mean to make my last response sound so negative.

+ThatCheapDrummer garstka is insane and yea travis isn't a bad drummer but I hear people say shit like "he's the best drummer in the world" pretty much just he's the only drummer they even know which is annoying but yea he's solid ... he's no meg white lol

I use to critique Travis horribly. But I don't anymore. He's actually a pretty good drummer. He can be on the beat like no other drummer I've seen. I also think, through the years, he's gotten alot better with his rolls and stick tricks. Another thing I admire is the fact that he sticks to a basic drumset. Nothing fancy,like everyone else,including me. I've bought just about everything you can shake a stick at. Ha Ha
@misfit20229 жыл бұрын
With regards to being on the beat I agree but I was lucky enough to see Foo Fighters with Queen and Taylor Hawkins also plays right on top of the beat it is fantastic whereas Roger Taylor plays slightly behind it and pushing it along. This is how Dave Grohl plays too.

This is a great video, all drummers should do this exercise, even at a slow tempo to build technique. Speed comes with the practice and repetition of your playing and this is a great way of doing that. I'm glad he did this, too many drummers these days don't pay attention to technique.

Can't believe all the criticism, this dude plays with some killer sound quality through the doubles singles exercise. To everyone saying he needs to work on technique: first off, he's a drum set player so ease up. Second off, post a video of yourself doing these exercises at high tempos with better sound quality instead of hiding behind a keyboard posting ignorant statements.
@misfit20229 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of people critique technique either because they do not understand what he is playing or they judge him on his personality. I do not think a lot of people realise behind the bravado and stunts and stick twirling there is a very accomplished musician with all the right technique.

Barker isn't a bad drummer by any means, he's very creative and his chops are fantastic but I can't stand when people call him the "Best ever!" He certainly isn't one of the best from the technical standpoint or even from a chop standpoint. He's more like a pounder with some great chops. (I can see that he's had some basic High School marching band training, leading to some moderate technique.) Again don't get me wrong, he is very good at what he does but he can't touch guys like Papa Joe Jones, Buddy RIch, Max Roach, Carter Beauford, Akira Jimbo and others who have completely mastered both chops and control.
@tomadams558210 жыл бұрын
He's a skilled drummer who way overrated . Those warm ups were basically his drum solo's . Iv'e heard better drummer at guitar center and on the streets . He's over hyped because he's stylish and is in a decent band . Popularity doesn't make someone a awesome drummer .

Someone did a high school marching band. Add more velocity to the stick. You can use arm, just not a full arm extension. FF should be 15/3 for Accents and Taps. 8-8-16 is the very basic warm up. The quicker you get, the lower and easier it should be. So far I haven't seen much of a gradual change and difference between taps and accents from him.

By the way he handles his sticks, you can say that he had a Jazz Drummer for teacher. That's why a movie like "Whiplash" is shit, they concentrate everything on the effort and strength to go fast, whereas you can go faster with less efforts on drums when you have the right moves and positions.

If the cricitism is him being in blink-182 then that's by the by, he's blinks drummer. He also happens to be one of the best drummers currently alive on the planet, that's not an opinion, it's a consensual known fact due to the skills he possesses. It's mastery, and he's been professionally trained since he was since a few years old. Watch him live and you'll see it regardless of what band/music genre he happens to be in at the time.
