Awesome explanation of Maruyama's technique. One of the best uchimata explanations I've ever heard. Keep up the good work Travis, it seems to me that your channel is worth joining. You may become even a better coach than you were a player (and you were an awesome player).

Really astute observations, thank you! Another thing I am amazed by with Maruyama is how he sometimes attacks with uchi mata off of his grip. He'll just grab and go. It's crazy how he can cover distance and fit his hips into position to lift without spending any time to feel them out. That must take extraordinary proprioception and awareness.

Really really really awesome video Travis thank you! I really enjoyed your observations and your attention to the small details which differentiates Maruyama's uchimata from others on the circuit (and at all levels in fact). I personally believe that what differentiates the Japanese as well as the really great competitors is that full commitment you pointed out. I know that I do my best to replicate that mentality in my own judo!

Turning throws are all about torque. It's just like a gold swing. Mark McGwire weighed 240 lbs and hit 70 HRs in a single season. But even McGwire can't drive a golf ball as far as Tiger or Rory McIlroy; he simply can't get the amount of torque that they can. When Maruyama leaps into his Koshi or Oikomi Uchimata, he covers 4' in the same time it takes someone else to cover 2'. So it looks as if his sweeping leg is floating before it's replaced by his posting leg. When he finally pushes of his posting leg and turns his torso, the amount of torque generated by recovering 4' of distance is just crazy. Especially for someone who competes at 145 lbs.

Hello Travis I think your analysis was super helpful and made me realize how important it is to cover distance when it's time to throw. But there's something I don't understand. How is Maruyama able to break the balance of the opponent? I mean he doesn't have space to pull with his hands and kuzushi. When I enter I need distance to pull from a stable position and enter afterwards. I don't know if I made my point. I just don't see how is able to pull that off.

Maybe an idea for a video: I keep hearing that left handed judo players are awkward to handle, have an advantage etc. It would be cool to see a vid that would enlighten what is is that left handed people can take their advantage with (likekwhat throws and spacing etc.) and maybe how righties can adapt to fighting a left judoka. Im a leftie so i might be biased on this but i think itd be pretty cool
