Trawler yachts are a type of motorized vessel designed for long-range cruising and comfortable living on the water. They are typically larger and heavier than other types of recreational boats, and their design emphasizes stability, comfort, and fuel efficiency over speed.
Whenever you wish to buy a luxury trawler yacht first and foremost you check out three things properly. I just want to caution you should be to be aware of a couple of things.

You make some valid points for nubies. Another important consideration is trying to take a trawler up a river. Under certain conditions, a large river can flow a a velocity greater than a trawler is able to may way against. As a former US Aux Coastie, we have seen trawlers actually pushed backwards by sudden river floods and dashed against the riverbank or severely grounded. Trawlers are excellent vessels but the lack of speed can be serious against fast flowing tides. They can also require expert handing in following seas to avoid being pushed sideways and swamped. They are serious vessels that require serious seamanship. The inability to outrun an approaching storm is to be seriously considered. I am sure I don't have to tell any mariner the folly of relying on weather forecasts.

Whats wrong with a boat with options ? A fleming 55 can go trawler speeds and yet has the ability to go 16-17 Knots when needed. And it has great fuel consumption.

@@robertfrost1683 people buy trawlers for seaworthiness and efficiency. A semi-displacment hull that does 16+ knots just doesn't compare. Everything in a boat is a trade off. You trade speed for seaworthiness and efficiency, and vice-versa. A lot of those "fast trawlers" will have you needing a change of shorts in 8 foot seas.

I don’t think you understand why a person would buy a trawler. Serious trawler buyers are looking to go long distances efficiently. Many come from sail boats and are fine making 7-9 knots towards their waypoints. You should probably stick to selling go fast boats for people who only go out for the day or a couple of hours.

@@osu3221 Not having a displacement hull doesn't make someone a fake boater... I own a hatteras, which can get up on plane at 24 knots. Just finished a 4 day trip up the atlantic from North Carolina. 3 of those 4 days were over nights at seas of 2-6 feet. I rebuilt both engines with a mechanically inclined friend and some family I can splice about anything in a line. A trawler is designed to go virtually anywhere and even a smaller one about 61 feet like the Ocean lass by Greenline or even the 50 foot Fleming and Nordhavn Yachts can handle that wake from a cruise ship, or anything else. Most of them are small yet carry a category A rating. Whereas a Sanlorenzo SD122, a Mangusta 140, AB 125 or some of these other faster yachts are rated for offshore use only. So you spend a bunch of money on a yacht that is limited to 50 miles offshore. But it can go really fast...woo-hoo. Yeah. You miss the point on why a trawler yacht is so popular and why expedition yachts are the hottest thing on the market right now amd places like Numarine, Alia, Alpha, CmD and Ava are all booked up for build slots. People want to go places where assholes like you in your flashy speedboat aren't. Acting like frat boys on a drunken Binger all night and zipping up and down to St.Tropez and Ibiza. Yeah it might take a while to get there, but at least we can get there and best of all, idiots like you aren't there cause your boat can't make it. 'AHHHHN cwuise sip wake scawed da person on da boat. Hahaha. Don't get twaller yacht. Get bigga fasta boat.'

I was in the U.S. Navy going 25-30 knots on a 600 ft. cruiser, I don't need that anymore, 7-8 knots cruising speed is fine for me. And there's no way I'm going to miss a cruise ship bearing down on me, I'll see it 15 miles away. One time in the Navy I had bridge duty as a phone talker. A huge container ship was on the horizon, radar said the CPA (closest point of approach) was the Chief's mess, in other words it's going to hit us if nobody gives way. The Ensign on duty was green and he couldn't figure out who had right of way, he had several rule books out flipping through the pages trying to figure it out and I'm looking at the container ship getting closer and closer getting ready to abandon ship expecting a collision and finally about 1/4 mile away the container ship gives way. That's pretty close for two big ships in the middle of the ocean.

The story about the wake is just scare mongering. If you’re night running and rigged for sea then it will roll the vessel, but no more. I drive boats fir a living in The Solent and we go from eBay £800 powerboats of uncertain quality (and skippers’ skill) to Supertankers, 65,000 tonne Aircraft Carriers up to the Queen Mary 2. None of their wakes will ‘damage” a vessel. And SPEED will not get you out of trouble. Only skill and planning will do that....

I've been on cruise ships and observed their wake. I'm having trouble believing even a tiny 40 foot trawler which can handle 15 to 20 foot waves on the open ocean would have any difficulty with the wake from a cruise ship. You wouldn't want to collide with a cruise ship, but it's wake is irrelevant.

Very true. I was the sea and anchor helmsman on a Korean era minesweeper (USS Esteem Mso-438), No I was not a boatswain's mate I was the store keeper (collateral duties). It was 172 feet long with a draft of 8 feet (crew of 75 fully manned) with NO type of stabilizers and we were made of wood so 4 foot swells from port to starboard or heck stem to stern for that matter were fun! The only thing you have to fear from bigger boat wakes are when trying to do along side refueling (we did it between Hawaii and the Philippines with an LST) It will try to suck you in to the bigger ship, thank goodness for variable pitch and twin screws/rudders. ours was successful! Unfortunately for the "USS Conquest Mso-488" not so much, they bounced off the side of that LST. Welp two big old holes on the port side later and they were headed back to Hawaii. They were in the Yards for two weeks. We waited in the Philippines for them!😁 We got the better deal by far!

@@captainwin6333, the points in the video are: Forums are the worst; salesmen want to sell you something. Trawlers are slow. Being slow, they cannot escape weather. Also, being slow, they are not ideal for taking someone on a short pleasure cruise to see sights. Cruise ships have big wakes that can damage a trawler. At night a cruise ship can "sneak up on" a trawler. l was taking umbrage with the point(s) of the last 2 sentences. Having observed cruise ship wakes, I don't believe they pose any danger to a trawler yacht, and since all the trawler yachts seem to have radar, I doubt a cruise ship could sneak up on one in the night.

This sounds like don't buy a trawler if you are a newb advise to me. This was the most simplistic advise ever. I was expecting a dissertation about full displacement versus planed hull design, fuel use differentials etc... What I got was one antidote about an unqualified watch stander panicking about one of the most common encounters in the Bahamas or Virgin Island areas (The Virgin passage at night between Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands is one long line of cruise ships anchoring out to time their port entry time in the morning or steaming through the channel one after the other all night long) and a platitude about staying ahead of the weather. Yes it can be nice to avoid bad weather but never count on it for an open ocean transit. Plan for the worst and tie down everything prior to leaving port.

Trawlers and btw they do make fast trawlers. 15+ knot boats that offer the flexibility and the best of both worlds are a great option in boating. Speed kills in many cases. More boaters are struck and injured by fast boats than by trawlers. Way more. So be balanced. No cheesey stories and spend sometime on one. Your goal to sell boats and boating.

There is a reason why people like trawlers and there is also a reason why people don't like them. If you only have a couple of days holiday each year you probably want to get somewhere fast, enjoy it and go home again. The moment you have more time on your hand, you don't need to go anywhere fast and you want to do it in a economical and safe way..........the trawler is the way to go. They are made to go places, they can handle rough seas, they don't guzzle fuel and they have tremendous range. True, a trawler is not for everyone, but that would also not be good, we would all be buying the same boat and I don't see that happening. We have a 50' trawler, use it 8 months per year, travel in the Mediterranean to go from one beautiful location to another. For us the destination is not the only goal, it is also the journey to the destination. And while doing that I only take on fuel once per season (about 3000 liters), while I see the fast boats going from one fuel station to another. Fine if you have that amount of money to burn, but I would rather spend that on a good meal, bottles of wine etc.

You probably are already aware that displacement hulls do not plane unless they are surfing down really big waves. If you can't plane, you are limited by the speed the hull can move through the water which is based on the speed of the wave from bow to stern. For most trawlers, very little fuel is burned at 6 knots. Fuel burn at 7 knots is more or less double. It doubles again if you do 8 knots. You see where this is going. In addition to the fuel the engine(s) use, the generator uses fuel as well. Some trawlers will deliver 4,000 nm on 4500 gallons of fuel, others will need a bit more fuel. Almost all the boats that go faster are semi-displacement or planing hulls which are typically happier doing coastal duties and don't offer the range unless you slow them down to 6 knots. There are a few used boats that surf quite well and can deliver the speed and range you desire, but they cost as much or more than a new trawler. If time is limited you might just ship the boat to your destination then take a commercial jet to arrive in time to meet your boat as it arrives.

Then you are looking after a Cantiere delle Marche CdM 130" like Aurelia, its has 8.000NM range, a powerful A crane and space for your sturdy landing craft. If money is no subject, go for something like a Metal Shark M48 catamaran. Its military grade, built with Incat Crowther designed hull, it can sail with confort in bad weather while others are returning to the harbour, it has a range of 11.000 nautical miles cruising at 10 knots on its IMO tier III engines.Thats impressive.

Actually, yes it does. I have taken multiple trips up and down the eastern coast of the US, during good and bad weather. Boats that can get up on plane are significantly more comfortable as they ride on top of the waves, while trawlers hobby horse over them, and can cause lots of discomfort. That being said, in really big waves, where any boat has to slow down, I would rather a trawler. It has to be remembered most boaters would not be going out in really rough weather as it is very uncomfortable and turns the cabin upside down, unless it is a multiple day crossing.

You worried about speed on a trawler? At least the trawler can weather the storm in most cases as opposed to a sailboat that would love to go 7-9 knots all day. Cruise captains typically know the right of way. The captain of a trawler should always be aware of their surroundings, regardless of their experience.

Interesting information but there is a lot more to this than just speed , there are a lot of yachts out there that claim to be trawlers and can go fast but if you look at the underwater sections their nothing more than planing hulls with a trawler styled deck house . When you get to the lumpy stuff their struggling to keep headway comfortably and slamming and banging all over the place , many are only classed as CE cat B which means righting moment and downflooding angles are much less than a cat A boat , hull laminations are bare minimum , deck gear is not up to spec for an ocean going yacht . There’s a reason the likes of Fleming , Outer Reef , Grand Banks etc have stellar reputations as off shore cruising yachts , their over built , massive stringers and runners , heavy laminations and deep forefoot’s for into weather handling , being semi displacement they can also have a turn of speed if needed albeit you’ll burn more fuel although who cares if you can out run the weather . I would argue that for the vast majority of people a full displacement trawler is not the answer either , they are built for ocean crossing which if that’s what you want fair enough but for 99% of people that’s a very rare use yet you will be restricted in speed to a max of 8 knots before the fuel burn goes through the roof and even the your lucky to hit ten knots on a bigger one and range falls off a cliff . A semi displacement can do ocean cruising if needed (I believe an Outer Reef went around Cape Horn several times ) but for the vast majority of time people are coastal cruising or short hops to the Bahamas etc . In my view and experience semi displacement is the best if both worlds but the current crop of ‘fast trawlers’ from Europe are nothing more than planing boats with a trawler top , zip around if you want just don’t get caught in a blow or you’ll soon discover why it nearly all of them can not pass CE cat A certification .

You obviously don’t sail. 7 knots is sailing speed on a good day. A trawler will allow a direct crossing instead of having to adjust for wind. Radar should have let whomever was on night watch know there was an approaching vessel at least 45 minutes out. I’m sorry but that was poor seamanship on the part of the lookout.
@russell4788
@russell4788 3 жыл бұрын
Did this trawler not have radar? And did he not have the option to increase distance laterally? just because cruising speed is 7-9 knots doesn't mean the captain couldn't increase the speed and make a turn to port or starboard to the cruise ship? How fast was that ship going that it snuck up on them so quick they couldn't make adjustments 300 kts? Sounds like a shitty captain trying to cover his ass.

Having read the threads on here, there is a certain aspect that you 'slow boaters' are not understanding. That is REDUNDANCY. Come back to me when you have a grasp of the word .

@@Ron_the_Skeptic Listen to the first thing Chris talks about in the vid and that is speed. I can only conclude that the word 'Redundancy' to you means only physical parts of the boat. It doesn't. Take a Nordhavn 47 - one engine, 1 elastic band get you home. Max speed is what, 11kns. The tides in some parts can run a lot higher then this. Look at the speed of the outfall of the Colorado river for example. It doesn't need a maths degree to see that sailing into a 4kn tide to know that 8kns becomes 4. Finally Nordhavn have seen sense andas started to put 2 engines on their new products as per the 41. But to get any distance it says cruise at 6kns. That's 18days, going 24/7 to cross the Atlantic. Ocean going? Yea Right.

@@robertstancer4469, thank you for the explanation. It appears you are using the part of the definition that says "having some unusual or extra part or feature." While having been in that industry, I am more inclined to recognize the part that says "(of a device, circuit, computer system, etc.) having excess or duplicate parts that can continue to perform in the event of malfunction of some of the parts." And, that's only 2 of 8 parts! Sadly, the Concord is no more. Were it still flying, you could cross the ocean in a couple of hours for the cost of a tank of trawler's fuel. Look at all of the boats that are capable of crossing oceans non-stop, none of them are fast! Iceberg was purpose built to cross oceans fast and it reaches a top speed of around 22 knots while surfing; it's also designed to cut into waves so its foredeck is frequently awash.! There are lots of coastal cruisers you can water ski behind but their range at that speed is limited to a few hundred miles. Most of them don't carry enough fuel to cross any ocean without a carefully planned route that stops for fuel at the next nearest port so they can refuel and the only way for them to get that range is to cruise at 6 knots. Going fast through waves of any size is a pounding experience. Crossing another boat's wake or a relatively small lake with 3 foot waves is tolerable, but it gets old quite quickly. Crossing an ocean that is anything but calm at speed would be uncomfortable and would probably break all your dishes even if properly stowed. I know little about the Colorado river, but the Internet says "Lower Colorado River Pocket Guide The Lower Colorado River is generally wide and flat as it meanders its way down toward the Gulf of Mexico, making it well-suited to casual paddlers and bass fishermen. The section of the river between Austin and Bastrop is especially popular due to its proximity to downtown Austin." While looking at it on Google Earth, I see it winds back and forth, so it is probably shallow with very little current. That view is supported by the notion of casual paddlers. I haven't been able to find data regarding current or depth, but I only spent a few minutes looking. I don't think anyone would try taking a trawler which needs 7 or 8 feet of water up the Colorado river. Instead, let's talk about the Niagara river which I have been on in a keel boat that moved at 7 knots, full speed! It takes some time to go up the Niagara in a boat like that because the current is 5 knots. You will see the occasional kayak on the river but the most common boats are small craft that can plane and the tour boats that take passengers a few hundred yards from the dock to the base of the falls. If you wished, you could easily take a small Nordhavn up the Niagara to the falls. If you wanted to go from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie, you would take the canal, instead, of course.

@@robertstancer4469 yep. 18 days is fine. What other boat can do that distance fast? 4 knots is also a very strong tide. Also, most nordhavens cruise at mid 7 knots. The fact is, boats built like nordhavens are capable of battling the toughest conditions, while typical displacement hulls up to 75 feet always only have a ce certificate of A

@@sadenuttie2234 I'm getting the feeling that you do not really understand boat speed and tide. 4kns is a ''very strong tide''? 7kns -4kns =3kns, hold on to your hats everybody.
