Today we put the Traxxas Rustler 4x4 VXL against the Rustler 2wd VXL in comparison test. We will have a tug of war, top speed test, and a jumping competition. Both the 2wd and 4wd Rustler were powered by 3s lipo.

I have had both and sold both but was considering buying another for quick runs and some winter parking lot bashing. I think honestly I’d go with a 2wd rustler vxl. I like the old school handling of it, it’s simple and easy to work on and less to cause a headache. The 4x4 is great but that’s my choice and opinion I like the 2wd vxl rustler and I think it looks better too 😊👍🇨🇦

I’ve had the 2 Wd and sold it as well. Has sellers remorse as time went on and bought another one. I no longer sell RCs. I always regret it down the line. I’m on my 5th summit and it will be my last. Keeping forever

4wd is easier to drive but I'm old school and like the 2wd better. Like that loose feel that you have to actually drive the car. Kind of like a 69 Camaro compared to a late model Camaro.

I've learned it's all about the gears and battery. I just got my 4x4 and love it. I've reached 50 on a 17 and sure I can get 55+ on a 20. Love the review especially the tow!

I actually got the 4×4 vxl about 2 months ago..I've upgraded all gearing..shocks..all small plastic pieces possible to match everything that green color stuff comes and after all the upgrades mine is pushing over 80mph..definitely recommend adding cooling fans as well as it does get hot fast

Also when stuff breaks and u have to order parts go ahead and order several at once so u have no down time waiting on delivery unless u have a hobby shop close by which I don't so I order everything from traxxas and usually only takes about 3 days to come in

I’m biased because I own one but rustler 4x4, I love the thing I’d never get rid of it, it’s a bullet a wheelie monster handles well durable and jumps so good.

Cheaper only cuz it takes away high end motor and esc that’s stock in the 4x4 as well as plastic tie rods on the 2wd that are metal on the 4x4 One you upgrade the 2wd to everything that stock on the 4x4 you spend as much if not more than the 4x4 but you’d still be stuck with only 2wd

I figured out taking rear suspension spacers in my bandit VXL made the wheelie bars sit way lower so it was easier to go full throttle

Nice competition. I was a bit surprised with the speed of the 2wd and great jumping with the 2wd. Not as easy as a 4wd. Must be nice to have help with those videos hehe

I have both but the vxl is almost too much power on 3 cell with rear wheel. I have so many rc’s depends on your mood what makes you happy! Again, great job! Another FYI, the 4 heel drive will need mip axles eventually. Specially if your bashing. 👍

I went with the 4wd, but I already have a pre-TSM Slash 2wd VXL which is a real handful with sct tires. I may end up with a 2wd Rustler, but it will likely be to scratch the nitro itch if I do.

I’m a 2wd kinda guy raw power is right!!!!! Way more power in 2wd then the 4wd just how it is!!!! That’s top end not low 4wd is beast mode in low end !!! 4wd not meant for speed runs in my opinion kinda off road option and 2wd is a lot harder to drive but way more fun once you learn!!!!!!! You guys think drifting a 4wd on road car is fun try drifting an off road monster truck 2wd like the stampede vxl that’s a mean beast when don right stock tires and body height needs adjusting but once slammed and monster tires on it the things nuts 2wd is just insane fun off road and on don’t get me wrong I do like 4wd but time and place for it!!!!

If you learn to master the 2wd you are the master driver. I love 2wd it's much more fun! Like a 2-stroke engine, dangerous but once you master it, 4 stroke is a joke.

2 wheel drive.. Ordered a Dumbo rc replacement transmitter and the receiver has built in gyro....I have the tqi I'm using now but new one has longer range..

You need to beef up those gears for real speed. I've built and rebuilt 5 Rustlers until I achieved speeds around 115mph or so and switch to Duratrax speed treads for better launch times and handling and will even improve speed times.

2wd is heaps quicker. I'm on 3s lipo 5000 with oversized wheels off next size up rc cars. Can do over 70mph not even full throttle as wants to do wheelies. Can backflip from a deadstop with bit of throttle. Have done jumps well over 50ft landing smoothly and quietly, can even do jump into frontflip to double backflip just using brakes and throttle. 5 backflip off single air is my record so far. Big proline wheels, glued tyres with foam inserts are the best. Just watch engines and electronics don't get to hot. Have replaced alot of parts for upgrades once broken but are having awesome times not treating them well. Avagud1

Hard to control the 2wd on a track seemed to consistently over-steer and it not good on grass. Seemed good on dirt bashing and on road with the right tires. I'm not a experienced racer though just like to bash.

Upgrade the sprocket for the 4x4 to a 50 or 48 tooth and I get 65-68mph mph increases also tell your son to get the sledgehammer tires. He will kill your 2wd 100%
