Being from Boston, we followed Marvin’s entire fighting career. He was robbed of the championship when he fought Antuifermo. Judges ruled it a draw. Then Minter won the championship and Marvin had to go to London for his shot. He easily destroyed Minter but the English crowd were so pissed off they threw beer bottles and cans into the ring injuring a few people. Marvin never was able to stand there and get the belt and be crowned “Champion”. This bothered him and he used that snub as a chip on his shoulder. It motivated him to work hard against every opponent. He was a great champion. May he rest in peace.

I watched this fight with my brother, we both routed for our fellow Englishman, but Hagler was a different class. I was appalled by the crowd reaction after, they weren’t real boxing fans and certainly not real Englishman. Hagler was class, and Hearns vs Hagler was one of the best fights I ever watched.

Minter made a fatal error in the 2nd trying to go toe to toe, Hagler had a record of 49 wins, 40 K.O. going into this fight. That right hand at 07:33 was superb, completely annihilated Minter after it. Disgusting how it ended, one of...if not the greatest middleweight of all time, had to receive the belt in the dressing room.

Vito Antuofermo was a slower starter but had fast hands. That bothered Hagler in their 1979 Las Vegas bout. Alan Minter was a good boxer and puncher, but rather mechanical. Hagler used wide hooks to keep off balance and win the fight. I still think it was a head butt in the third, accidental or not, that caused Minter's corner to stop the bout. (Same as the Antuofermo rematch.)

@@peterbalac1915 Yes, he was gutsy and tough too, judging by the fact he was still on his feet after getting thumped heavily multiple times in that 3rd round. A bad decision to fight like that though, his defence wasn't great and his accuracy wasn't quite good enough, at least not when he was already slightly dazed by the good shots he'd taken which is also when he was most fired up and trying to go toe to toe. I've heard of Minter but he was a bit before my time, this and another fight I just watched are the first I've seen of him, but I notice he was a bit taller than average and perhaps that allowed him to adopt a rather open defence early in his career; his hands are too low and while against lesser fighters he was probably able to do fine like that, because they were kept at range more often than not, better opposition can get through. Perhaps also he was used to his toughness and strength doing the job, but Hagler was very tough and often evaded his shots in this fight.

This fight, along with Holmes Vs Cooney, were 2 highlights from my schooldays. There was good banter between the black and white kids but this fight took it to the limit. I honestly liked Alan Minter, he had a good chat with my brother when he opened a supermarket in our town. But then he said what he said. Touchpaper lit. It was live on TV and the next day at school was epic! There was a really good interview with Alan many years later when he talks about the fight. Top class. He regretted saying what he said and moved on. RIP both Alan and Marvin.

Boximg records were sparse in those days and vhs tapes very very rare. But Minter wouldve known Hagler had cleaned out the division. Minter wouldve thought I beat antuofermo easily and marvin was struggling at the end. Finnegan had tested Hagler over 19.Minter had been ferociously competitive but usually lost to cuts. He had every reason to be confident. He was robbed of a gold medal in 1972 and at 28 seemed in the prime of his life. He came out ultra aggressive rather than his usual boxing. He learned what tommy hearns learned 5 years later u dont try to knockout hagler. A shame Minter had the skills if not the skin to extend Hagler the distance

@@dquinn8344 "did nothing great" are you serious? Marvin is like the real life embodiment of the broken boxing game character that gets a 95/100 in every single stat. Not perfect but still way more than enough to match any other character in any individual skill. Chin, Brawling, Infighting, Technical Boxing, Stance Switching, Defense, keep-away fighting on the backfoot ala Ali and Holmes - anyone Marvin ever faced that was great at any one of those skills, Marvin matched or exceeded. That's WHY he was champ for so many years, because he didn't have any weaknesses to exploit.

I watched this fight live on TV in 1980. What this video fails to show is one of the most extraordinary scenes I have ever witnessed in a boxing ring. When the ref stopped the fight the English fans became so angry that they began throwing glass bottles into the ring. Hagler's cornermen formed a protective shield around their fighter as the bottles flew. If you are interested you can see this on other youtube videos of the fight.

Minter, faced... simply the greatest 'Fighter' of all time. It is extraordinary, how his years of schooling in Philadelphia, fighting 'bums' (yeah right), equipped him to destroy all the so-called other 'top' fighters. He is the Greatest middleweight ever, and probably only second to Ali in 'greatness' because of how he got there. He did not have Ali's political prowess and that is what made his greatness 'pure'. It was pure boxing ability. The Greatest 'Fighter' of All Time in my humble opinion.

The ending of the fight was odd to me. It was not a doctor looking at Mintor's eye it was his corner people. They asked the ref to stop the fight which makes it even more reprehensible how the fans acted. I think the ref wanted them to wipe the blood off so he could evaluate the cut over the right eye.

The British public bottled the hell out of him for winning the fight yet it’s conveniently removed from the video typical
