Then there is Roy Jones , who barely lost a round up to this fight , his defence was his reflex , he went from middleweight to heavyweight for the challenge , try losing that weight to get down and to lower weights and with age , your reflexes slow and your defence disappears, but up to John Ruiz , jones was the best fighter ever , a one in a million , most professional quality fighters still say “ nobody beats a prime Roy jones “

Some people like the Pot-shotting style Jones made famous and Mayweather later perfected, but I have always found it boring to watch and honestly a cowardly way of competing-especially the level Mayweather took it to. I'll take a Hagler, Hearns, Holyfield, Tyson any day of the week over a fleet-footed, pillow-fisted boxer who makes a living avoiding the real competition and cherry-picking belts. That said I feel like Whitiker and Toney- guys who used defense as offense were great as well. Jones paid for his choices late in his career when his natural speed vanished and Mayweather got out before his completely vanished. neither guy ranks as high as those previously mentioned in my book, and they never will.

No one's career took a bigger dive after Roy Jones lost to Antonio Tarver. Just about every great takes their losses in the end of their careers (Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Duran, etc.) but for some reason, people have short-term memory when it comes to how great Roy was in his prime. If he retired after he beat Ruiz, he'd probably be considered the greatest.
@tafari127Ай бұрын
Short term memory is a factor but there's more to it than that. Every athlete's twilight is different. Roy wasn't just good, he was arguably the most talented fighter EVER. His pinnacle was high, and his decline was precipitous. The Glen Johnson KO loss was even worse than Tarver II - anyone can get caught but it was clear after Johnson Roy was pretty much done at the top level. So where you've got fighters who still win a meaningful fight here or there post-prime (Manny, Hopkins, Toney for that matter), Roy really didn't (please, no one mention the Ghost of Tito). But all you have to do is load up fights like this, Reggie Johnson, Virgil Hill, Ruiz... obviously one of the best to ever lace them up.
@kawaiiafangirlАй бұрын
@@tafari127 absolutely. w/ most boxers though, boxing aficionados only mention their highs but not their lows. Duran took took a couple of Ls before he even won against Davey Moore but those aren't brought up when you talk about his legacy (his dominance as a Lightweight, beating Leonard in Montreal, going the distance and losing a close one to Hagler, the upset against Barkley, etc.). As you said, Roy Jones' career was nearly night and day after that Tarver KO. It's also true that he didn't have that great bout past his prime like Hopkins has repeatedly had and the way Pacquiao did against Thurman, the way Toney did against Jirov and Holyfield, and the way Marquez did against Pacquiao in 2012 and against Alvarado. For my money though, Roy Jones at 160 - 175 lbs. and the one Heavyweight bout against Ruiz had such a large gap against the 2nd best boxer of the year in that period (Whitaker, de la Hoya, Hopkins).
