Canal de um genius well the other thing to consider to how he looks, dude looks great, but is still quite small... if you want some decent hypertrophy do some bodybuilding, but absolutely mix both! There is no denying the strength gains from body weight.

@@joojotin Same for me. The movements use your whole body, and Dominik explains it well but your nervous system is much more involved when you use more muscles, stabiliser muscles etc. compared to when you do bench press, for example.

Imo, bodyweight training gets boring when you get "too strong" for the exercises. Bodyweight pull-ups are great when you can "just" do 10 reps, but when you get to the point where you can do 30 it starts to just get annoying and boring, because the sets become way too long. Edit: And you reach that point very quickly when it comes to lower body exercises. The only challenging one is pistol squats, but that's not good for the knees.

@@iwantlee9510 you're forgetting about progressive overload, get a backpack, start adding water bottles every couple weeks and aim for 8 reps for 3 sets so that you get actually stronger. I bet you can't do 30 reps with the one arm pullup👀👀👀👌 ain't nobody done that yet, even then you can add weight to the one arm pull up and eventually you could have a stronger back than most strongmen

There is no such thing as getting "too strong" for bodyweight exercises... If you are getting 30 reps of pull-ups, then you aren't doing them right... it's as simple as that. Try slowing the reps way down... go all the way up so the bar touches the chest (or at least very close to it), hold it for a few seconds by squeezing your back muscles as hard as possible in the top part before slowly descending down all the way to the bottom for another pause with absolutely *no* cheating, swinging or momentum whatsoever. Done this way, I doubt anyone is even going to make it to 8 full reps... no matter how strong you think you are. Still think that's too easy? Try doing the reps like I said but on Olympic rings or a suspension trainer (dual anchor points).

But there's literally thousands of other exercises that you can always strive for. Planches, levers, hefestos, muscle ups, etc just to name a few. Then there's rings, which take every element to another level of difficulty. There's literally always a new move to strive for, new level of strength in calisthenics.

With 14 I started going to the Gym and did Bodybuilding till I was 18 years old. In that time I build some good muscle mass but I wasn't that strong. I could do like 12 Pull ups and like 20 Dips or so and my Bench max was exactly 100kg for 1 rep. Then with 18 I started doing pure Calisthenics and weighted Calisthenics and my strength exploded like crazy. My weight kept being the same like before (+- 80kg) but I became more shredded and stronger while keeping my old muscle mass. Now I am 20 years old and can do dips + 80kg for like 8 reps and pull ups +65kg for 8 reps. I never tested my max reps in both but I would guess my pull ups to max 30 reps and my dips at like 45 reps or so. Now I can bench 100kg for like 10 reps so my max would be around 130-140kg I guess. I can do a full front lever(18 seconds), victorian on p-bars(8 seconds), muscle ups(14 reps), one arm pull ups(3 per arm), backlever(18 seconds) and a v-sit(8 seconds). I am 184cm tall and weight 82kg, so I am not that big but I am strong as fuck. Calisthenics is definitely great for building strength while building a beautiful body.

(When i was younger around 10 yo i was training gymnastics and then i was fall in love with Ninjutsu and trained for 6 years, story short i got injured and left the community... It's been about ten years now I'm 26 yo, during this years i trained some bodybuilding stuff but it didn't make me satisfaction, I found calisthenics way more goddamn satisfaction even more than Ninjutsu, I'm not even looking for any competition i just wanna satisfy myself )

I agree dude, calisthenics easily carry over to weights, for example, my bench press keeps increasing from doing purely calisthenics. There's far more to calis than pushups and pullups, when you start entering the advanced moves world -- your strength gains become ridiculous.

Heavy strength training has increased my chin and pull up count since I started training heavy cable pulls, over body weight. Now I can do weighted chins and pull ups for reps as well. Do bar, do kbells, do calisthenics, do what you enjoy and helps you get consistent.

Body weight is also superior for people who can't afford a gym membership, or their own weights. And people that travel a lot. You can't carry a gym with you, but the weight of your body is always there where ever you go.

I agree with this. When I was at 102 lbs (46.2 kg), in 9th grade, I was able to bench press 135 for 7 reps just by doing push-ups with different variations. Same with the squat. Calisthenics can transfer more to weights than weights to calisthenics.

I think doing both bodyweight and weight lifting is definitely the best way to go. But it's important to focus on one for a period of time before doing the other I believe because otherwise, based on my experience, you'll wear yourself out trying to do too much and make slower progress. Not only physically but mentally it's overwhelming and exhausting to worry about doing so many exercises. There's overhead press, deadlift, bench press, squat, front squat, barbell row, pull ups, chin ups, barbell curls, push ups, dips, planche, handstand pushups... There's simply too much. I'm focusing on just 4 exercises for now which is the front squat, deadlift, bench press, and barbell row. Picking one and getting good at it seems best to me.

Both weighted pull-ups and barbell rows are standard in a general strength training weight lifting regime. The video should be named "why close-kinetic-chain exercises *tend to be* better than open-kinetic-chain ones". Calisthenics are better for relative strength and weights are better for absolute strength and hypertrophy. There is tons of anecdotal experience to prove it.

I was doing both calisthenics and weights. I was really heavy. I wanted to lose more weight before converting 100%. Well except leg day. I like doing deadlifts, weighted squats And pushing the sled. But it’s more like 75/25. I’m trying to box and it was hard to relax because certain muscles were tight like my upper back and shoulders because I would do seated rows, bent over rows, and military presses. It’s been a week and my muscles are already way more flexible. If you’re wrestling yeah weight training is beneficial and functional because you’re trying to move weight. But striking you need relaxation and flexibility.

Both are great. My approach is different when it comes to calisthenics, as the movement comes first and the strength/gains comes second. LIfting weights it's all strict discipline. The gains or strength comes first, and there's no other marker of success other than strict numbers.

Definitely agree with your argument of closed chain vs open chain and building true transferable strength. I think one oversight is progressive overload. Weights are much easier to progressive overload in a controlled fashion. I acquired the strength to do my first pullups on a lat pull down machine back in middle school. Was it the best route vs banded bodyweight? The verdict is still out. Weights are a tool and are not the end all be all but I do think there is a lot of value to them in conjunction with calisthenics.

There is no *direct* calisthenics replacement for the deadlift... but as long as you are training your hamstrings with Nordic curls (or suspension strap leg curls) and doing direct lower-back work like hyperextensions (back raises) or reverse hyperextensions, you should have no need to deadlift in terms of muscle function.

In my experience lifting weights have more benefits than u think(or simply glorify calisthenics) . Pros: easy to learn movement, harder to get injury, easy to progression in exercises, can do a lot better training on lower parts of body. Bodyweight training can help you with overal movement, have many exercises engaging core, great stabilization. Gains in that trainings will be that same ( overtraining is the same, recovery is the same) I think you realy love calisthenics but glorifying bodyweight training with not objectivism arguments is not quite fair(your friends in the gym propably haven't done that years of strength training that you do). To sum up, that 2 types of strength training can be mix together for THE BEST result. One is not better than other one. Just think what you must do for better effect in your situation. Do the both and you are the CHAMPION.

For whatever reason, I’ve always had way more difficulty doing lat pulls at the gym than I had doing pull ups. I could do 25lb weighted pull ups easier than lat pull downs with 30lb less than my bodyweight!! I always figured maybe I have worse form on the pull downs since I’m not as used to them.

Firstly, you just get used to do pullups, so when you back to pull-down machine it must take time for your brain to adapt again. Then, master your form in pullups first, i can assure that it can be translated to machine much easier later.

The easy answer is that you should do both. Pull-ups and dips are great, but so are BB bench press and seal rows too. You dont need to stick to one or the other. When it comes to lower body development though, you need weights. Bodyweight squats doesnt work when you you get to a certain level, because you cant do sets for 5 minutes straight of 100s of reps just to reach failure. That's when you need weights. Doing 50 walking lunges isn't a good or fun option either, when you could just add weight and reach failure in 10% of the time.

For most people, exercise choice comes down to enjoyment and what you personally want to excel in doing... some exercises (like pull-ups) are considered far more essential for general fitness and strength than others. The BB bench press is for the most part a supplementary exercise (unless you are into lifting sports)... meaning that most people have no actual need for doing them, but if you enjoy them and want to claim a big bench then yes, they are necessary. You *may* need weights for the lower body, but not because it's too easy or because you will end up doing thousands of reps if you don't... If you take the simple bodyweight squat and slow the reps *way* down, while fully contracting your lower-body muscles for the entire rep and go nearly all the way down and slowly come up (but not all the way up), your legs will be on fire after only a few reps. Done right, you will be lucky to get even 10 full reps this way...

Even scientific articles show that the inverted row has better lat activation than the barbell row. Same thing applies push ups. They are more compound than bench press. I bet elevated pike push ups better for delts than seated dumbell press 'cause it feels more natural . Disadvantageous thing about bw exercises is progression. Everything becomes so fancy when it comes to progress the exercise. I actually don't want to do Handstand push ups 'cause I am a human. What if i cannot control myself just for a moment and fall down broke my fucking neck. It does not worth it to perform the exercise. Reward to risk ratio is too low . Look at that poor dead guy he has nice and well sculpted shoulders :D. That's why I choose exercises that I can safely perform .Weighted vest would be great solution for progression but at a degree you will reach there too . On the other hand who wants to lift ton of weight fuck it I just enjoy doing bw exercises it makes me happy and feel good. I hope everyone reach their goal in life take care of .

If you learn a handstand you won't fall over and break your neck lol. Handstand is not that hard. At one point it will be as easy as standing on your feet. And even if you fall somehow, you will still not break your neck (unless you are doing handstand on a high bar or a ledge). I have fallen countless times when I was learning the handstand the worst thing that happened to me is a slight wrist pain. But that's it. You are more likely to get herniated disc doing deadlift than break your neck doing handstand push up.

From my experience i noticed i blow up faster with calisthenics especially with pushups what i do is i put music on and i keep doing pushups until the song is over no counting reps just keep moving

for older or fatter people, safety is first, weights are easier to start/progress. Bodyweight training needs much more pressure on your joints, people need to get fit to some level and gain some strength to start this kind of style of bodyweight training. For example, push-up from floor is pushing about 40%~60% of your body weights, as a 200 pound guy or gal needs push up at least 80 pounds, not saying these compound movement needs great control of multiple joints. I do believe in both, but one the other can benefit in different aspects. --my 2 cents.

Man you gotta to be kidding me chances of injury while doing weights is even greater for young people as compared to bodyweight then obviously for older people its even more, bodyweight are easier to progress, simply because it has so many progessions and regressions that one with any level of fitness can start working out with low risk of injury. Not agruing just telling what i know.

So as a 120kg overweight 41 year old would you say it would be better to get my fat content down a little bit with weights the. Start with a callisthenic workout, aim is to reduce fat (belly) and increase flexibility / mobility.

I’m not strong enough to to a lot of calisthenics movements, can’t even do one pull-up. Weight training I could do. Why is calisthenics harder for me?

body weight is great always flexible and agile, while weight, mass that u dnt need, stiff body, that is what i believe, other may have different opinion

Nothing against Olympic Lifting but I think that it's not healthy for your body. Doing a Clean and Snatch puts alot of pressure on your joints and there is the danger that you can hurt yourself.

You can easily do different external rotation with bodyweigth although it might be way to heavy for most

You said that laying down is bad while performing an exercise?Because in Cali there are many exercises which include laying down.Sorry if I didn’t get it huge respect Dominik!
