Good presentation. I always thought it was possible to have a curveball that you could throw for a strike or bury for a chase. I thought it was just a matter of release point and desired location. could you explain why you should only have one or the other?

My understand as a college pitcher is that while you can use your curveball as a bury pitch or as a show pitch, but understanding what yours is better at allows for it to be used more effectively. If your curveball is more like Degroms (firm with less vertical break) it will work better as a bury pitch.

I throw two different curveballs, within a given situation. It can be a chase pitch; with a harder snapping break that creates more chases, or a show me pitch that has more loop(starts at hitters hip and breaks in to the inside of the plate. Also; I use a very unique technique of thumb positioning and “cocking” the ball back into my grip, so that it almost springs out of my hand upon release. Im sure others have done/do this. But, among all the pitchers I’ve played with and coached, im the only one that I’ve seen use this.

I'm surprised no one ever talks about the pointer finger curveball. That's what Zito threw and I know he's not the only one. First time I tried it I was throwing it for strikes anywhere I wanted it. You can use it on Sliders too. And the easiest pitches to throw as hard as you can are the ones you have total comfort with. I'd suggest it to anyone who just can't get comfortable with the index finger curve taught by 99.9% of the internet

What do you mean by -5 vertical break. Is that 5 inches downward movement? Because that doesn't sound like a lot. Where can I get more info on those technical terms you use in those pitch design videos?

-5 vertical movement refers to the amount of drop induced on a pitch on top of the force of gravity. Positive vert refers to the amount of carry/lift that a ball has off of the expected path of a pitch due to gravity. Baseball Savant has a great glossary of pitch metrics and their definitions on their website

Having lots of problems throwing this pitch where it looks competitive, ie it's not in zone, I throw what looks to be a very late breaking curve that goes anywhere from -6 to -16 IVB and -11to-14 HB. Velo is 65mph vs fastball at 82. Is it as simple as trying to get a more consistent break and if so is there a more efficient way to get there than just throwing more? If I throw it harder, I spike it.

Can the spike be done with a knuckle if using the tip of the finger feels odd/uncomfortable?

Whatever is comfortable and gets you results 👍

Would pronating after release on the curveball (like you would on a fastball) increase velocity and movement?
@cubsfanman-nx6pg6 ай бұрын
Doing something after you release doesn't affect speed at all since the ball is already out of your hand and you already natural pronate after every single pitch you throw anyways
