There’s more to making the big leagues than throwing hard

At some point. I'm still training and trying to return from multiple surgeries (hip and elbow). Neither has fully worked to this point and I'm still unable to throw at full intensity as of now. I'm working full time to get those addressed and you'll see me throwing hard on here again once I do!

Is there a temperature you use to decide if you throw outside? Would love to be outside but Midwest weather doesn’t make it easy.
@jibbo123
@jibbo123 3 жыл бұрын
Temp shouldn't matter. Unless there 6+ inches of snow, you can long toss
@treadathletics
@treadathletics 3 жыл бұрын
As long as you can get warm, no. I would say anything over 25-30 degrees is pretty doable.

Hey when I played in Minors and MLB when it was cold in the north east I would often throw a football up to about 60 years to keep my arm in shape! I found that throwing a football did a great job for the bitter cold months of keeping my arm in throwing shape! Having been a HS quarterback I knew that throwing a football in 30 degree weather was safer for my arm than throwing a baseball in bitter cold weather! Plus it was easier for people to handle a football then slinging 92 mph fastballs.

I'm a 37-year-old amateur (obviously) in Minnesota. I throw to a net out in the cold, but once we have snow (which we will for the next few months), about the furthest away I can set my net is 120 feet. My primary objective is arm strength/conditioning/health. I was thinking about simulating long toss throwing a soft tee ball off the wall in the racquetball court at my gym. Thoughts on general conditioning benefits? I just want my arm to get me through the season. Thanks.

For general conditioning, you'll get similar benefits throwing into a wall/net close up. The main drawbacks like I mentioned are more the difficulty in solidifying mechanical changes and the risk of developing bad habits given the lack of immediate feedback. The tissues in the arm will still be adapting to the throwing volume either way.

Could you point me to a video explaining how long toss can affect pitchers with mechanical flaws such as uphill? Or low elbow. The uphill I think speaks for its self but the low elbow I’m not sure I understand. What’s the difference between a low elbow and an elbow below shoulder at landing vs some pitchers that have an elbow higher than their shoulder at landing. Hope that makes sense

Here's a link to a video where we discuss low elbow pretty extensively: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWGZpWaja82LeZY

Outdoor allows for me variability and a higher ceiling to throw to. When indoor it’s set, with boundaries. But outside you really can do anything you want.

How many days a week do you recommend long tossing?
@johnandreas3727
@johnandreas3727 3 жыл бұрын
My coach plays in the MLB and he told me that I need to be long tossing 1-2 a week. I’m a 15 yr old pitcher.
@treadathletics
@treadathletics 3 жыл бұрын
We don't use long toss with all of our pitchers. But typically our guys will throw anywhere from 4 to 6 days per week. About 2 of of those being higher intensity days, 2 being recovery days and 1-2 being hybrid/moderate days.
