Rockmount Western Wear is one of the oldest western clothing stores here in Colorado. They are well known for their hats and western shirts. So well known in fact, that reportedly the owner let David Bowie in after hours to do some shopping, as he had never been able to visit during normal business hours!

I live in a city with a 2000 year history so, plenty of old houses and when they are renovating I ask if I can go and look for stuff mainly 17th, 18th-century wallpaper also many of the old old rooftops were uninsulated the way back way of insulating was shoving newspapers into the cracks I found multiple curfew papers from 1806 with all the new rules under Napoleonic French occupation just shoved into cracks I found pieces of 17th-century hand-painted canvas wall covering yup! pulling stuff off walls sure sounds familiar!

I live in Denver! Very interesting info about Rockmount Ranch Wear from their website: Jack A. Weil “Papa Jack” founded Rockmount Ranch Wear in 1946. He was the oldest CEO in the world, working daily until age 107. He is to Western wear what Henry Ford is to the car. Papa Jack made the first Western shirts with snaps and was key to popularizing Western fashion. He was also the first to commercialize bolo ties.

Interesting factoid. Way back when, many log structures were chinked with bread dough (the gaps between the logs filled in). Somebody found a piece of chinking in a tumbled down 200 year old log cabin. This person was a bread enthuesist, this piece was soaked in water and fresh flour was added; The microorganisms were only dormant in the dried bread dough, they restarted. All bread was made from a starter back then, this person now had that original 200 year old starter.

You are correct about that radio needing an antenna. The length of antenna will determine how well it recieves and what it receives. short waves can be up to 400 ft long, and you need to have an antenna that is at least one quarter of that to receive that frequency. the smallest wave is 50 ft, so you'd need at least a quarter of that to receive them. for fm, you on 78cm long, one quarter of the FM common frequencies. AM band antennas need to be hundreds of feet long to work well... I know you say you've never seen one that ong. Most all antennas are loaded, that means coiled wire to give it the right length. In a more modern AM radio, inside you'll see a bar of something, it's usually black, wrapped with thin copper wire much like a speaker or motor coil, but longer. That is also why AM radios work better turned one way than the other on more distant stations. Even FM is usually pre-loaded with some coils of wire in the base to get the right lenth. CB antennas are the same, but if not loaded they would have to be 9,18,27, or 36 feet long. They used to call the antenna's for AM radio Long wire antennas. I restored a radio very much like that one when I was a kid. Then you could still get tubes easily and cheaply... now those same tubes go for outlandish prices. Need some? I have some but they won't go cheap.
@ordinaryaverageguy764 жыл бұрын
>need to have an antenna that is at least one quarter of that to receive that frequency. This is not entirely correct. Strong shortwave stations can be received on _much_ shorter wires than 1/4 wave. I hear lots of 5 - 10 MHz overseas stations on 10 - 15 feet of wire in my basement (on a receiver that is working right). A quarter wave for those bands would be 25 - 50 feet. Receiving antennas are not nearly as wavelength critical as wire transmitting antenna. But _in general,_ higher & longer are good ideas if you're serious about SW listening. Tube prices _are_ ridiculous for certain favored types & brands but I can still buy even the old 2-digit (1920-1930) tube types for a few dollars apiece if I'm patient, look in the right places &/or do some of my own testing of used tubes.
@tootall55594 жыл бұрын
@@ordinaryaverageguy76 yes, IF they're strong signals, they can be received by lesser antennas, however that's not optimum.
@ordinaryaverageguy764 жыл бұрын
@@@tootall5559 Nope, it is not optimum but it is sufficient to test a set like that. Optimum can get complicated, such as using a antenna tuner.
@tootall55594 жыл бұрын
@@ordinaryaverageguy76 Yeah, I have simply hooked one up to a wire clothes line... did the job for testing, though you wouldn't want ti for anything serious. I did some work for a lady in the nearest larger city. In back of her house was a STONE building, it had a radio antenna tower at one corner, it had both a omni directional antenna and a nice rotatable beam antenna. I peeked through the window. There was just tons of radio equipment inside. I'm not well versed enough to recognize it all at a glance, but there were nice microphones, HAM sets, and even CB sets and QS0 cards on almost every wall that didn't have other stuff on it. I'd have loved to talk her out of it all.. but to remove it from the building...what a chore and where would I put it? The gear belonged to her late husband. She hadn't needed or wanted to sell it off, Just like the pristine almost new old pickup setting in the garage.

As someone who has done restoration & repair of old radios, some as old as the 1930s, I would never, ever recommend just plugging an old radio set in & seeing if it works. It's possible to turn a restorable radio into "for parts only" by firing it up like that without checking the internals. Many parts, like power supply filter capacitors need replacement after so many years. Failures of those capacitors, or a power supply tube, can burn out windings in the power supply transformer, and those are nigh impossible to to find replacements & extremely expensive to have rebuilt. Odds are such radios won't work right without electrical restoration anyway, so why take chances at making it worse? Have it looked over to see if it can be safely brought online first. I cringe every time I see one just plugged in like that. That's a beautiful cabinet set, and worth taking care with.
@randomvideosn0where4 жыл бұрын
My parents had a really old one that was built into a fireplace mantle, and it had shorted out so touching any part gave a good zap. Rebuilding a transformer isn't that bad if you know what you're doing.
@ordinaryaverageguy764 жыл бұрын
@@randomvideosn0where Rebuilding a transformer isn't that bad... if you're experienced, have the right tools, have the right wire & insulating materials, have the patience and time. The concept is simple, the execution is fiddling mad. And there's a big difference between rewinding, say, a little filament transformer and a large multi-winding, tapped high voltage transformer with perhaps thousands of turns of fine wire. There's only a few places that will do one with any guarantee for you, as long as you hadn't made a hash of it trying to DIY. Far better to just not risk burning one up to start with.
@elipotter3694 жыл бұрын
Now you mention it, I am always a bit shocked (no pun intended) every time I see Alex plug in an old electrical appliance, rather than handing it over to a qualified and experienced with old stuff electrical person first.
