I am a vet tech as well and of course have one of those dogs with a true corn/wheat allergy!! Figured it out when after 6 months on a hydrolized diet she was still losing hair and was super erythemic around her face. She has been eating solid gold now without issues (grain inclusive diet just minus the wheat and corn). Have had a few instances where she breaks into the cats food, and they eat RCVD S/O, then she loses all her hair around her face again and gets hot spots. But other than that she’s thankfully done great!

Thank you, Victoria, for adressing the wheat/gluten issue!! I get so tired of undiagnosed pets with obvious allergies who come in, and the people have wasted so much money on grain-free foods but don't want to pay for the foods that will actually help (Science Diet, etc). Great video! I was also wondering if you have ever tried apoquel, or if the cytopoint and immunotherapy have just been enough for your pup? Apoquel and Cytopoint are like the number 1 go to allergy treatments in our clinic if they are financially possible for the client, and immunotherapy tends to be our last-ditch recommendation due to the cost and commitment involved on the client's part. :)
@TheBirchFamily6 жыл бұрын
I Loooooveeee apoquel! I use apoquel and cytopoint together whenever my pup is just miserable. But it doesn't happen to often anymore - the cytopoint has been working great for her lately! The immunotherapy was very expensive and very time consuming.... but it was worth it in the end. It's definitely not our first recommendation if we can control the allergies with something simpler. However, there is nothing simple about my dogs allergies haha so it was necessary for her case and it worked great!
@litlenessita3 жыл бұрын
After hearing you explain this, my cairn terrrier def has environmental allergies! He used to lick his paws like crazy and we spent so much at the vet trying to help our boy even when they tested him they couldn’t tell us for certain what he was allergic too they recommend apoquel so we pay the money even though it’s expensive because it works but I’ve also found wipes like the ones you mention do work for him plus medicated baths, I just wish he didn’t have to take the medicine hopefully I can find something that will help him like the apoquel does
@chrishayes57552 жыл бұрын
"environmental allergies" is not an accurate description of the problem. immune dysfunction is the problem which manifests as allergies. your dog reacts to environmental factors because its immune system is dysfunctional. why is that? hard to tell. antibiotics can disrupt the gut microbiome which is a large part of the immune system. terrible quality food can as well. very bad genetics can play a role.

Just an FYI for anyone watching this video. We've spent 3 months, 5 vets, Apoquel, & Cytopoint, trying to troubleshoot our dog's food allergy. Ended up with a hydrolized protein kibble. After a month plus of that and no improvement, come to find out, up to 40% of cases will NOT respond to hydrolyzed protein fixes. Apparently, our dog fell into that 40%. Dermatologist suggested Purina Pro Plan, Sensitive Skin/Stomach, Salmon. Been on it a week. Only seven more weeks to go. 😵💫

My dog is having rashes and I'm realizing that he's probably allergic to certain foods and I can't believe how many meats and proteins dogs are allergic to you would think that would be their main food and yet you've got to find a kangaroo or an alligator for them... Next time I'm in Australia or in the Florida swamps I'll make sure to pick some up but for us that don't live in the outback It would sure be nice to figure out what kind of meat protein our dog can have... It's almost easier to get whole food from the grocery store than it is for us to get a good quality hypoallergenic dog food where I'm at

My dog is actually allergic to grains and wheat, so she has the “grain free gluten free wheat free organic” food that you seem to hate! Haha. It’s done absolute wonders for her, she used to flare up horribly and would itch until she bled. I always looked in to Hills and RC but they don’t seem to do ANY grain-free food here in the UK! I know your pain with Katie though, my baby has the grain allergy along with environmental allergies, Summer and Spring can be stressful! Anyway, love your videos!
@TheBirchFamily6 жыл бұрын
I don't hate "grain free foods", I think they are overhyped and not necessary for every pet like they are advertised. Like I said some pets can be allergic to grain! But it's a very small percentage. It looks like you have one that has a grain allergy haha.

Hi there! Can I just ask if it is harmful to the dog if it licks the areas that have been wiped down by the Mal-a-ket wipes? I’m worried because I just got the Mal-a-ket TrizEDTA spray conditioner from a friend to spray on her inflamed paws. I’m just wondering if it is harmful to her if she licks her paws after I’ve sprayed the solution.

Hey Victoria i have a serious question. I’ve been pretty concerned about this so hopefully you can make a video answering my question or just reply on here ☺️ i feel like it would be a good video tho😉 i am starting my externship in little than a month and this has been on my mind lately. Can you pass diseases, bacteria, etc, anything, to your pets from the hospitals?? I know there are zoonotic diseases, so can you pass those to your babies? If so, what do you do? Do you change your scrubs before going home each day? Do you take a shower as soon as you get home? Wash your hands really well?? And i remember you saying in one video you got ringworm, how do you not transmit that to your dog and cat? Thank you!! And keep up the hard work!!

i adopted a 6 year old dog last september (2021) , she was heavily overweight and shortly after i got her, she got a very bad ear infection, which until today is still present . I have been to 5 vets , did all kind of blood works, CT scan, steroids, antibiotics etc NOBODY could help. I've given up on Vets all they want is $$$$. As i said her ear infection is still there, not as bad as it was , but. I have changed food (home cooked 50% Meat 50% vegetables) Olive tree capsules , Lions mane , Multivitamins , Salmon oil , green lipped mussels, chia seeds etc. after watching a few videos on Hypothyroidism in Dogs, i think that's what this dog have ? and also a tracheal collapse (which i have caused) I ordered some Thyroids supplements let's hope it will help/heal this dog . She is still overweight and sleeps most of the time . The reason why i believe it's my fault why this dog is so sick is; when i got her, was was "crazy" literally ! i could not take her for a walk she was afraid of everything , a motorbike far away was enough for her to pull like crazy . I am a strong man but she is a strong dog ! she always pull so hard, so i got her a choke collar , hopefully it would stop , it didn't. Her ear infection wasn't really the issue , i believe it was cursed by her pulling , i destroyed her thyroids and her windpipe ? That's why she has all the problems now BECAUSE OF ME!

I'm sorry I just cant get behind a company that would put by-products in a $75 vet diet food, or have the meat protein source be out of the top five ingredients. Glad it works for you but I'd rather pay for better ingredients or make my own food.

Victoria, I buy my dogs grain free and gluten free food. My male actually does have a grain allergy and it's easier to feed them all the same. I buy gluten free because I am allergic to gluten. I cannot have it in my house because I am so sensitive to it. Personally, I won't buy Hill's, among other brands, because they do test on animals.
@taylacammbll6 жыл бұрын
Lindsey Straley ..Hills diets are actually tested on beagles generally and they have access to an outdoor area, play time and after the study is finished they are adopted out. And if a diet is AAFCO certified is HAD to have gone through either a lab test or a feeding study to obtain that.
@lindseystraley15486 жыл бұрын
Taylor C there's a difference between the different types of testing. If I'm wrong, I'm glad. I hate to think of animals suffering. I'll look back into Hill's but mine are currently pretty happy with their food.

This was damn helpull, I never ever ever comment on youtube, but this time I have too, just to DAMN THANK YOU! My dog's allergies have been getting worse and worse, and the vets never explained ANYTHING to me, so I was getting a little nuts and desperate because I honestly don't know what to so anymore. I bath him evey month, with hypoallergic shampoo, and I use simillar whipes to those; I feed him with salmon gluten free whatever dog food. It just doesn't go away. SO I AM GOING TO THE DAMN VET AND DEMAND MY DOG GETS A FREAKIN' INJECTION. I feel like this problem is not taken serious enough, because the dog is not dying. But is starting to look like Ron's rat from Kim Possible, because he has rashes EVERYWERE, so, I want a solution! Thank you so much for at least helping me understand what the hell is going on with my dog. Big hugs!

My cat Leo has the WORST allergies. He has really bad allergies to dust, he will literally scratch the backs of his ears raw 😩 I've had him to the vet so many times thinking he has an ear infection and, nope, just really bad allergies.
@TheBirchFamily6 жыл бұрын
Awwwww! Poor Leo :( What has your vet recommended to do for him???
@kaylamaenot32476 жыл бұрын
Victoria Birch honestly not much 😥 because it's environmental, and his ears are basically over producing wax, I try to keep them clean so the wax does build up...and I put Neosporin in/and on his ears when he does itch them.
@TheBirchFamily6 жыл бұрын
You could try switching him to a prescription allergy diet and see if it helps. We have had a really great success rate with prescription diets and kitties with environmental allergies as well. The diet has omega-3 fatty acids like EPA and DHA to promote optimal skin and coat health. Which would help build his skin barrier and hopefully help protect him from environmental allergens. Call your vet and see if they have an objectives to switching him to a prescription diet. It won't hurt anything AND it could possibly help! www.chewy.com/royal-canin-veterinary-diet/dp/35480

Victoria Birch the only issue with that is I have 4 cats 😳 so trying to feed one of them something special is Oye vey...I do give them all a food grade salmon oil, which has really helped with dry skin. It all really started when I moved into this apartment unfortunately 😭
