It depends on who you are. A director would not be expected to send anything else apart from their treatment. If you're a production company, it's a different story-there's a whole bunch of things that need to be sent: multiple directors' bios, multiple directors' treatments, production budgets for each one, team presentation, portfolio, production timeline, deal memos, and agreements. And all of this happens before the deal is even made and prep work starts.

As someone looking to start a production company and getting into producing, that would be such invaluable information. There's just not a lot of information out there when it comes to all the prep (paperwork) that is required before/after a production. I appreciate the work that you @Nur-niaz and Scott Peters do in helping emerging filmmakers understand the film (especially Commercials) industry on a deeper level.

I have a question... WHEN you should send a treatment? When you are reaching out to a new prospective client, should you send a treatment in the first email to get their attention? Or should you wait until they reply to you and ask for a treatment? *I am reaching out to brands directly and not to agencies, for photography or video services. It's obvious when they contact you, but 90% of the time I am reaching out

Usually when it comes to commercial directing we write and send treatments when the agency has picked their shortlist (typically 3 favorite directors) and then we pitch with it to win the job. It takes a lot of effort and ideation to get it right. Since you’re reaching out yourself to see if they’re even interested first I wouldn’t bother to make a full treatment. In your case maybe a moodboard and a few notes will do. But even then it’s a lot of effort when you don’t even know their marketing plan and strategy. So in the first email I would just send them your offer and portfolio/site.

People in advertising need to have an empty soul. Every time I made a sales pitch I felt so sick. Repeating the same stories about happiness, with cheap sentimentality to sell shampoo, dog food or a new car. Lying to myself to believe that imitating other commercials had some creative value. Luckily I don't make that garbage anymore and that industry is dying because nobody watches television.

99% of ads is a copy of a copy. But the industry is anything but dying. I see it changing and evolving and moving to different platforms. There are more ads than ever before, and the costs of production have dropped so much that now UGC is king.
