Isaac Yang, M.D. is an assistant professor in the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery.He specializes in adult brain and spinal cord tumors with an emphasis on acoustic neuromas.
As a principal investigator at the UCLA Brain Tumor Program, he is leading research studies and clinical trials to optimize brain tumor clinical outcomes, novel nanoparticles in immunotherapy treatment of brain tumors, and experimental glioblastoma therapies such as brain tumor vaccines.
He is widely sought after by the media, colleagues and patients to discuss new treatments and advancements for brain tumors. He has appeared as an expert on CBS The Doctors, The Dr. Drew Show and other national news outlets. Dr. Yang has received a number of national awards and grants to honor his research work in brain tumors and excellence in treating and caring for patients.

Dr. Yang, thank you for an outstanding presentation. You are the best I have ever come across. I was 28 yrs (1986), when I was diagnosed with an AN, had surgery as it was 6 cm large. This left me permanently deaf in my right ear and facial paralysis. 2018 At 60 yrs, I had another AN of 5cm large, had surgery again. I am now 65 yrs and the AN is 34mm. At this stage, I am having an MRI every 6 months.

In 1998 I was a 23 year old male athlete,no smoking or drinking alcohol and no fast foods that was in great shape(5'10",175lbs 5% body fat) with a 3.8cm acoustic neuroma in my head.Had surgery and everything went wrong with me.Lost my hearing,facial nerve ,had spinal fluid leak 4 times,one of the because of a simple sneeze,so the doctor decided to put a permanent lumbar shunt,but that failed twice.Long story short it took a total of 12 surgeries to fix me up(over 9 months)from cranial plasty,muscle grafts,spinal taps,shunts,gold weight implant for my eye lid,etc.If you have this type of tumor,remember my case is over 17 years ago,today things are much better for anyone with this tumor.I hope I didn't freak anyone out with my story.Best of "luck"for all people that get this type of reality check.A word of advice,find a doctor with a good track record.

I don't think there is any developments yet in the treatments - i have an Acqostic neuroma of 3.5 by 4.3 - my hearing almost gone on one side but my balace and facial nerve not het affected, What do you suggest me? surgery or radiation? or Marijuana oil

Thank you for this video. I am waiting for the result of the MRI scan that may confirm this type of neuroma. I lost my hearing in the right ear up to minus 60 dB overnight. Initial threatment with cortisone infiltrations had no effect. First I panicked seriously, now I am very anxious about it. The hearing loss and the bad quality of the sound as well as the tinnitus that comes along with it has a severe impact on my live. I wake up in the morning and immediately I feel depressed. Listening to music is very important to. My hobby is the restoration of music equipment, like radio, tuners, amplifiers. That ship has sailed. I am 62 years old. Yesterday and today I cried because I feel completely helpless.

Does radiotherapy make it more difficult to have surgery later? I have heard radiotherapy makes the AN more “sticky” to the nerves

Excellent, compassionate and detailed presentation. I really appreciate it as I do my research. I have a couple of questions regarding MCF. Is there a particular question to ask a surgeon on ways to prevent Post surgical Headaches? Do drilling techniques play a role in the Post-surgical headaches, air pockets? I know if one has headaches prior to surgery that makes them more prone to post surgical headaches but in my research and watching actual MCF surgeries on Neurosurgical Focus , etc I see a lot of bone shavings and wonder if that contributes to the Post surgical headaches? just a thought. Thank you

Hi , is tumor of 22mm considered as big? And also can gamma knife producer be done twice in 10 years time? Please can someone answer my queation😟 I was diagnosed with acoustic neuroma back in August and has sec scan last week. First time i was told to watch the tumor and see if its growing. On the second scan tumor is exactly the same size but there is a small compression on brain stem which was on the first scan. Doktors told me i need operation and already said ill loose hearing on my left year. They haven't even done the operation, but already know I'll be deaf on left side I have fantastic hearing at this moment and I thought they should do everything to preserve hearing. Please can someone tell me what to do. Im desperate 😪😪😪

Thank you Dr. Yang. Great presentation, it was very informative. My mom has a 6 cms AN removed in October. There is a residual tumor, 0.3 mm. She is 70 years old and the doctor wanted to preserve the facial nerve, quality of life first. Would you recommend Gamma Knife to get rid of the residual?

I'd like to know why none of my doctors I've seen (neurologists and neurosurgeons) don't believe me when I tell them that my schwannoma that was found about a year ago, IS causing me a lot of pain! its been extremely painful, and very difficult to deal with. To me, it just seems as though they're minimizing the problem for whatever reason and don't want to get rid of the thing that's causing me a lot of grief! The tumor is small at this time according to them. I did have a MRI done, ... with and without contrast, and it measures 9 x 9 mm. Wish you could help me in some way, maybe by referring someone. Thank you for making this video. It's very informative.

Hi, ... I just had another MRI w/and without contrast, and it's a tiny bit bigger now. Cyber knife told me that there's a lot of side effects with that, and it's too risky. The brain surgeon wants annual MRI reports. I don't know how much bigger it needs to be before they consider removing it. Not that I want to have brain surgery. The pain is controlling my life. I wish the pain killers worked better. Thank you for asking :)

thank you a lot, dr. Yang. Concerning my small, but relatively fastgrowing AN + already 48 db hearingloss + tinnitus, I'm considering GK or fragmentated radiation. My AN = 1.5 in total, only 7 mm extracanalicular, march 2013). In april 2010 it was deep intracanalicular. So let's say there's a 9mm growth in 3 years. I have already hearingloss of 48 db. In august 2012: 33 db. My question: can I still preserve my hearing by (fragmentated) radiation or GK (which?). (I donot know it's a cystic AN)

Hilarious. The doc, here, says to eat a healthy diet and exercise leading up to surgery. Then he says later in the video that "obviously i like fast food." LOL. Better be careful, doc - you may be the one in the surgery room for open heart surgery if you keep eating the fast food.

I would only do the surgery if your VS or AN is life-threatening or you're ADLs are so awful and consistent with the symptoms and outcomes of a risk awareness protocol or surgery gone wrong. Tinnitus, facial droop, eyelid or tear issues, speech impairment, lacking taste, facial tingling, other tongue issues, serious balance issues, ambulation, disturbed gait, otherwise Absolutely NO to the surgery! The healing time is long and painful and those who come out with minimal side effects are calling themselves "lucky." Be aware and observe. Get lucky in Vegas, not in the OR. Live your life and remember to die with it, not from it.
