Treaty - yesterday, today, tomorrow: 2021 Proud Partnerships in Place: First Peoples Public Admin

Honourable Justice Sir Joe Williams KNZM leads a session on Treaty at the Proud Partnerships in Place: 2021 ANZSOG First Peoples Public Administration Virtual Conference held online in February 2021.
The conference unpacked and celebrated the successes we are already seeing across Australia, Aotearoa-New Zealand and internationally. It challenged participants to think beyond the way things have always operated, to consider how First Peoples knowledge, local community decision-making and new relationships with government and the public purpose sector can be mobilised to meet the needs of communities.
Governments and First Peoples are working together on a range of treaty, well-being budget initiatives, voice, recognition, land management, health and social service issues that all require authentic partnerships, to solve local and global challenges. This work constitutes a resetting of relationships and will determine a new course for how First Peoples and government agencies work together into the future. The conference provided an opportunity to examine how local knowledge can address global challenges in the face of increasingly constrained resources, threats to the environment and the disproportionate impact of these events on First Peoples communities.

Interestingly enough, because NZers are no longer british subjects except Maori. It needs be said that Maori DO NOT have any obligation to abide by statutes, laws or legislation pertaining to acts of the NSW settlers govt. The Treat of Waitangi 1840 afforded Maori, under article 3 of same, british subject status. Furthermore, the treaty is between the English Monarchy and Maori. So from the 1 Janaury 1983, the NSW settlers govt of NZ lost jurisdiction and/or governance authority over Maoridom. The court of appeal for Maoridom is the Privy Council. The govt. have no authority to choose the governor general as her role is to act as intermediary for king charles to Maoridom (british subjects). The UK has a responsiblity to provide protections to british subjects no matter where in the world they are. It will not be long before the world will witness a transition in NZ. It is Maoridom who has the right to choose aliens to government and determine the performance that we want from them in meeting the expectations of the people.

Yes, you're quite right. The facade by the colonists (pakeha) certainly gave it the outward appearance that the treaty would provide Maori with assurances that we wouldn't lose our sovereignty, which is why the Maori version is the official version. But alas, the forked tongue pakeha had NO INTENTION of partnering with Maoridom. Instead they wanted their greed and their lies to allow them to deceive and commit fraud. Let alone murderous genocide. To this very day, pakeha have been systemic racists. Legislation put in place immediately after the signing of the treaty to hinder Maoridom by way of exclusion, racism and even slavery. So if you think what Im saying is SPIN, then you know nothing about anything. You're one of those that believes in racism by way of low expectation. If you need an education, let me know. I'll tell you how the English made all of it's commonwealth citizens "Dead or Lost at Sea". Then maybe you'll think differently about the importance of knowledge. But remember, you're dead or lost at sea.

@@Digmen1 What you were NEVER exposed to was the TRUTH about the TOW 1840, and what preceded it. Queen Victoria’s first Royal Charter/Letters Patent dated 30 July 1839 claimed British Sovereignty over all the islands of New Zealand by the “Law of Nations” and placed New Zealand under the dependency of the New South Wales Government. The second Royal Charter dated 16 November 1840 separated New Zealand from New South Wales dependency and made New Zealand into a British Colony with a Governor and Constitution that set up our political, legal and justice systems under one flag and one law, irrespective of race, colour, or creed. The signing of the treaty was a RUSE, Maori had NO idea that Queen Victoria had betrayed Maori who signed a treaty that is not even recognised in NZ law, nor in International law. The fact is, it's not even a treaty. It's a MEANJNGLESS piece of toilet paper fit for nothing other then a bush pig to wipe it's Rss with. To be clear. The wool is still over Maoridom's eyes because they STILL DO NOT KNOW that Queen Victoria betrayed Maoridom as well as her uncle, King William IV, to whom she became successor to the throne after his death on 20th June 1837. Everything that government's have done since 1840, have been under the guise that the treaty is being observed, and itis NZ's foundjng document, when it actually ISN'T.

Yes they did cede sovereignty, that is what Article 1 says. What is your evidence to say that they did not cede sovereignty?

Average outcomes. Generally. Why not mention the successes? Why doesn't he focus on Maori causing their own problems like preventable disease? No one makes someone smoke or eat junk food. Both Maori and English text say basically the same thing. Hold on, slavery was not abolished in NZ. Maori practiced slavery. He makes no sense in his translation. The Maori treaty says that in article 1, that the Chiefs give the crown government over their lands forever. That’s the first article the overarching article. So then say that the treaty all of a sudden gives the Chiefs government is nonsensical. Chief township is over a tribe, not a country. What does he think that every chief would have government over the other chiefs? One would think somebody of his stature is a lawyer, would have a basic grasp of what the treaty says.

Its pretty simple really, the British settlers needed land. The people already there said no. British solution: we will invent our own version of the treaty and make it sound like the occupants are giving it to us...for FREE! Wow, anyone gulible enough to believe that are just kidding themselves. I know its tough to swallow but, the British were desperate and their old thieving ways came to the fore. Its served them well I might add. 180 years of profit and living here rent free. But the time has come. The cats out of the bag and they've finally been called out for what they really are. A bunch of thieves.

Interpretation,in any context is subjective to the understanding of the person doing the translation and interpretation relevant to his given subject matter ,,,,with that in mind it important to note …the two men who translated the treaty reverend Williams and his son were not expert translators nor experienced in Māori culture and in the spirit of colonial land grabbing things were kinda slightly skewed towards an English standpoint to best favour the colonial governance at the time ,,,, an example of how this would work is like a real estate agent selling a dilapidated run don house near a sewage outlet ,,, he could say it was a house worthy of fixing up and that it had water front views ,,,, factual yes truthful no way

​@@johnathantepairi7728 Hi, William Williams, wrote a Maori dictionary published in 1844..They also were involved in translating the first Maori version of the bible. They obviously were proficient enough. If they acted as you claim they would need a pretty good understanding of the language to be successful with such a skewing. The treaty isnt skewing, its very clear. Article 1, "the Chiefs give the crown government over their lands forever." Mairi knew what they were signing. We know that because some protested and warned others not to sign. But some were smart enough to know it would be wiser to have a treaty. The French wanted the Islands and there would have likley been no treaty or getting rights of French subjects with them.

​@@fxt363 That doesn't address my comment. Sounds like the talk of a supremacist. None of my grandchildren are fluent in Reo. Reo is essentially a useless language on the world stage. (Even in NZ). It would be wiser to learn Mandarin or Indian. Though Indians are not pushing their language down everyones throats. This isn't 1840. Learn Reo if you want. Learning a language should be a personal choice. Though that is being infringed upon by activist propaganda misrepresenting what the treaty was and is. The treaty says nothing about learning languages, partnership etc, its First article is very clear. "the Chiefs give the crown government over their lands forever." No ambiguity. The overarching article that is conveniently ignored for some odd reason.
