So glad to hear someone speaking out against the tiny cages. I'm not a reptile keeper myself, but I work with many animals and have a passion for wildlife rehabilitation. I didn't have the experience to say that those small enclosures are wrong, but it just seems obvious to me. Please continue to speak out against small animal enclosures. Animals are beautiful and incredible and deserve the best care possible. If you cannot provide that care, you should not get that animal. It is not your right to keep that animal. It is a privilege that you should take very seriously.

There's no consensus or specific scientific studies on the subject, though and since you'd need to do those for practically every species, it's all guesswork at this moment. So it's best to just listen to others, what they experienced and what worked for them.

People associate algae with dirty water because of the aquarium hobby. Algae flourishes because there are nutrients in the water. It’s a sign of healthy water. People do everything they can to get rid of it and really if you let it go, you’ll have the cleanest most sterile water out there. I have a 600 gallon saltwater system and I have a 75 gallon refugerium in the loop. 4 150W spot lamps on 24 hours a day. It’s flourishing with critters that get blown into the tank and feed the fish and coral, tons of algae which absorbs all the excess nutrients and keep the main tank spotless.

yea algae typically cleans the water and is a similar function to having water plants. unwanted kinds of algae rarely grow at the water temperatures we keep. as well "blue green algae" which can be dangerous for animals is actually cyanobacteria, not a algae at all, and grows in low flow/low oxygen conditions. completely avoidable with good flow and fresh water

The greatest thing about how you guys keep your animals: It's INEXPENSIVE!! A few 2x4s, plywood, and a roll of wire cage material, and you have a nice large environment for your animal. I think that's a big misconception about large enclosures. People think it costs a fortune. And indeed it does, if you purchase manufactured enclosures from big companies. I exclusively keep my reptiles indoors because I don't have the right climate outside. But I just build them out of plywood. They insulate well, and are relatively cheap to build with a little know-how.

I do the same brother almost the same concept of building a house and how it keeps heat etc in. Just need to water proof etc depending and it’s good to go. And it can be overly simplistic or you can above and beyond and build out. Manufactured enclosures although very ascetically pleasing don’t have as much versatility and cost up the Butt

Since I started being interested and wanting to learn about reptiles, and started watching videos, it has saddened me to see huge snakes in drawers. Just enough room if the coil up. No room to stretch, roam and no enrichment. I hate the government interfering in our lives and making keepers get rid of animals, but in this case I would like to see a law. Same for any animal. It should have the room to live a quality life. Would just love to visit Tom Crutchfield’s place. What an honor it would be.

To people who complain about algae. No matter where you are, or what is around you. the only bodies of water that do not have algae in it are chlorinated reservoirs and underground springs. Algae naturally filters water and contains a bunch of nutrients. It also battles bacteria that would be on the side of the dishes and often outcompetes it. The main types of algae you need to watch out for arent actually algae. Blue green algae/ cyanobacteria is the main one you want to watch out for. Brown algae and hair algae is usually fine.

So glad he touched on the mental health and reason for living of reptiles...each time I'd find myself with a new small reptile I would have no choice but to have a small space to keep them ...and I'd look in their eyes and see real feelings...even depression and desperation...people said it was in my mind...but once I started interacting based in their reactions and asking permission to hold them etc...they communicate and really do strive to understand and be understood...its is really such an unexplored world...when you start to see creatures looking back at you with intent and meaning...makes the world seem that much more vast somehow.

Tom is a reptile God. Ive listened to him a few times at reptile shows. He is a amazing man Kennan and for you to have him as a friend you must be honored. When I was younger I was into snakes mostly. But always wanted a monitor just never had the room for one. But I've been into animals in one form or another since I was a kid growing up Brooklyn N.Y. You name it I most likely had it at one point or another lol. If you ever get up to Pennsylvania with your wife and the kids you're always welcome to come visit our wolves and wolf hybrid ranch we have. And if we have cubs the kids will get to spend some time with actual wolf cubs. You just have to tell Sofia she can't take them home. Tom has a really nice set up for his reptiles so do you. Still hoping and praying that you get Bobby back hopefully in good health. Can't wait to see what the guy's at Aquascape do for you. My partners and I are thinking about having them do something for us on our ranch for the wolves. But as you know it all comes down to funding. Maybe in a year or two. One of the partners I've been showing him your videos plus videos from Paul and Deermeat for dinner. He wants to set up a channel and have me run it. But we have other things that have to be taken care of first. So who knows down the line you guys may see me out here in the future lol. Other than that keep us posted on Bobby and stay safe .

TLDR: For most of you, Importing tree monitors from Indonesia is a bad choice. Most tree monitors (Prasinus, Beccarii, Boehmei, Reisingeri) are protected by the P.20 Indonesian law enacted in 2018 (Meaning that every Indonesian citizens aren't allowed to capture/keep/buy/sell them), those that are not protected by the law (Macraei, Kordensis, Bogerti, Keithhornei, Telenesetes) are severely endangered, EXTREMELY RARE and ELUSIVE in the domestic reptile market and in the wild. So please, to the viewers out there or anyone that is considering getting wild caught ones from Indonesia (or even getting "captive bred" ones from Indonesia in that matter) DO NOT GET ONE FROM HERE! unless you have academical intentions, have a good experience in keeping them, has sufficient space and a well maintained animal sanctuary, LEGAL BILL OF PURCHASE and CERTIFICATE from a trusted tree monitor sanctuary following the proper and strict importing animal regulations appeal. I knew that Tom and Kenan has the noblest of intentions on keeping them, and you guys have my utmost respect on this matter. But it kinda bothers me a bit when anyone says that their tree monitors are wild caught. I believe that tom has the proper papers and certificate on importing them, but it bothers me that another monitor has vanished from our natural habitat. Even for us Indonesians, It's really really hard to get the proper papers to keep (needs 2 kinds of paper, 1st is a Keeping certificate that states the origin certified sanctuary they came from WITH the head bureau and ministry signature, 2nd is a Sanctuary certification to state that your place has been deemed proper (and is an approved sanctuary). And even then, I've known very few local law-abiding sanctuary and certified breeders (less than 4) in the last 7 years. Laws are weird in Indonesia, they are enforced strongly and harshly if we decides to follow the regular procedure. But once they smell money, its all slick and good. That's where the black market came in, USUALLY when SOME international buyers are interested, these so called certified seller/"sanctuary" hires poachers, and they have their own paid guys inside the animal protection bureau to grease the proper papers for international buyers with a high price. And voila there goes our importing protected (or endangered) animals law. Not saying that Tom or any other noble reptile keepers that kept wild caught tree monitors are evil or bad guys, but just wanted to tell you how most of the time importing tree monitors from Indonesia goes down. So please everyone who is considering on getting one imported from here, think about it before you decide to get wild caught ones. The world have many legal tree monitor breeders outside of my country, so get one there instead. PS. I'm an Indonesian born and bred+a longtime reptile keeper, I've seen and known a fair share of tree monitors in the wild and in the domestic trade, legal or illegal. Known enough laws and our people behaviours in coherent to said laws and how the reptile market/industry works here. I stand by what I said and even think I am entitled to say the things I've said. To stop more wild population decrease. PPS. I do not own any tree monitors, even legal ones. As i believe in doing so will cause a damaging and negative impact in the wild, although I have about a dozen captive bred, non-endangered, legal and unprotected water and mangrove monitor.

Beautiful and relaxed monitors! 😍 Did Tom mention a name when he was talking about the monitor that was stolen and returned to him at the end of the video? I couldn't make it out.

Even in aquariums, algae is an oxygen provider and many fish eat it. I always leave a certain amount of it in my tanks to try to keep it somewhat like the wild. Kenan’s bowls are right!
