I'm 5'8 / 155lbs ... athletic build. I ordered the small and medium and returned the small. Wore the jacket this weekend in the mountains over a base layer and midlayer (Kyanite LT) and it worked perfectly. A little bit weighty but I really enjoyed using it!!! Great work Rab! Note: The version I received only had 1 kidney tie/cincher in the jacket and not 2. Not a deal breaker. The 1 tie did a great job when I needed it.

Great video showing the features of the jacket! It looks like a good replacement option for the discontinued Rab Bergen. I was originally thinking that not having a storm flap and velcro would limit the venting options, but your demo of using the lower and popper and unzipping from top and bottom shows a good alternative to dumping heat, while staying protected from the elements.

Hey Paul. Thanks for the review. I wish Rab just sewed logo on the fabric. Should I be worried it might peel off?. That's my only concern. Overall, it's true competitor amongst other 3l Gore tex jackets. Rab took a different path: No obsession with reducing thickness of material which results in great grammture. Well-made stuff.

We've not had one returned for a delaminating logo yet, so I expect you'll be fine.

Thanks for the review. Bought one in Medium. I‘m 183cm 87kg athletic build and the body and arm length is on the longer side. The chest and shoulder area is a little tight. Should I order a large or do you think the arms are too long then?
@trekitt2 жыл бұрын
The arms are designed to be long to ensure you've got adequate coverage when reaching above your head/walking with poles/etc. Buy the large, cinch the velcro up around your wrist and you'll be golden.

Wow, just find this video, and it's just what i'm wanted - subscribed of course. This jacket is exactly what i'm looking for. In sizing terms, wich size would you recommend for 5'10"-ish, 78 kg's, let say old man with some stomach ? Want to put one or two layers underneath sometimes too but don't want that baggy or bulky look when in jacket only with base layer. I'm in doubt between M and L and don't have chance to try it anywhere. Or is it maybe some other jacket to recommend? Thanks in advance.
@trekitt3 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid the best I can do is to suggest ordering both and sending back the size that doesn't fit. At least this way you can try with various different layers and get the perfect fit. Harry

Are the 2 gods toggles at the front of the jacket supposed to pull tight? I purchased one of these from you guys last week and my 2 toggles won’t stay tight when pulled. They just flip back and the hood then becomes loose.

Just ordered the kinetic alpine and am just wondering would this have been better option or can you explain the differences? Keep up the good work.
@trekitt4 жыл бұрын
The Kinetic is more of a softshell which also happens to be waterproof, whereas the Kangri is an out-and-out hardshell. For constant, heavy rain and when wearing a heavy pack, go for the Kangri. For changeable conditions where breathability is paramount, go for the Kinetic. Kind regards, Harry.

what is the most waterproof jacket you guys could recommend?
@trekitt2 жыл бұрын
Anything with Gore-Tex will be waterproof - the difference lies in the durability of the outer/inner fabrics surrounding the membrane and the features. Both of these will depend on which activity you're doing. For the average walker, the Kangri will be ideal, but if you're heading up some alpine climbs then you may want something a bit burlier with a helmet-compatible hood and other climbing-related features.
@raress52295 жыл бұрын
Hi! I just checked their site and I saw that someone asked whether the hood is compatible with a helmet,and the answer from the employee was no.(you can find it on the q&a section about this jacket).Is he just a bad informed employee or the jacket isn't really helmet compatible although it fits one :).Thanks,and great review!
@trekitt5 жыл бұрын
The hood isn't designed to fit a helmet, but in practice you can fit one underneath for a short period of time.

Hi, good review. Can you please comment how soft or hard the fabric is? And how loud is it? I have jacket from Haglofs which is also (partly) 70D and it feels really hard and makes a lot of noise for a jacket. I have another Gore-tex jacket from Salewa and that one is really nice and soft and quiet. For a day in the mountains it might not be very important but for everyday use it is. Thanks.
@trekitt4 жыл бұрын
Hi, The Kangri is made from a tough nylon fabric to withstand the wear and tear associated with walking and mountaineering. Consequently it is quite "hard" and does rustle when you move about. I suspect the Salewa jacket you mention may be made from polyester, which is much quieter, but less tough.
@airwolfnh3 жыл бұрын
Very good review, I think you could have improved a little bit on the ... well... water proof bit, I have tried many many jackets and they ALL failed on me, they work absolutely fine for the first 2, 3 hour on the rain and then eventually I get wet, I am yet to find one that works for all the day long if the rain just doesn't stop.. which in England is a reality, what do you have to say about that? Is this just another jacket that works for 2,3 h or it just works, period? And another question , how fordable is it? Is it malleable? Like... a bit soft or hard to fold? Cos this would go on the top of my backpack, and if I can't fold it there... then it's a no go for me as well. By the way, trekitt is my go to website to buy outdoor gear, excellent service and very good reviews.
@trekitt3 жыл бұрын
Gore-Tex provide a guarantee stating: "If you are not satisfied with the waterproofness, windproofness or breathability of your GORE-TEX product we will repair it, replace it or refund your purchase price." - essentially meaning, if the jacket leaks after a few hours, they'll sort it out. I would be very, very surprised if any Gore-Tex jacket began to leak after just a few hours. I've used Gore-Tex for upwards of 8 hours in the Lake District during constant heavy rain and besides a little condensation (which is inevitable), I stayed completely dry. The Kangri is pretty pliable and can be rolled into its hood and squashed down when not in use. So, depending on the size of your rucksack, you shouldn't have any issues getting it in. Harry
@airwolfnh3 жыл бұрын
@@trekitt thank you, I will give it a try then...
@chriscoyle12214 жыл бұрын
So if you’re wearing this jacket whilst hill climbing in cold, windy, rainy conditions that there will be no condensation at all on the inside of the jacket at the end of your hike? I’m desperate to find a jacket around £250 that will not leave me severely frustrated by finding dampness on the inside of it at the top of a long climb.
@trekitt4 жыл бұрын
In our experience, you can't really avoid condensation altogether, it works similarly to a tent in that you can reduce it but not eliminate it. In terms of how to reduce it, start a little cold so when you begin to ascend you'll warm up to the correct temperature, and open the pitzips before cooking up a sweat; this will allow your heat to escape effectively and massively reduces condensation build-up. Even small things such as opening the cuffs will allow greater ventilation without exposing yourself to the elements. Kind regards, Harry.

I'd recommend giving the video below a watch which should be able to narrow it down for you. It largely depends on which one fits you best, which one contains the features you're looking for, your budget and how durable you need it to be. For example, I'm between sizes in Rab's shell jackets, but fit Mountain Equipment's options really well as they tend to be long and slim. Kind regards, Harry. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5-3g2usZ5aXhLM

Try this jacket on a windy wet day and you will find that the neck area is impossible to close. Its like a pelican. The hod pull cords dont hold and the little they do just pull the jacket so that the whole weight of the jacket sits on the top of your head. Shame but at least its now Gore Tex. Lets see a wet and windy video.

The hood and the collar are not a good design like most jackets made now. Zip through collars are bad because you get that terrible half-open look at 4:08. Your chin will constantly hit the jacket when it is partially open. The collar should be separate from the zip and flip up and snap in front. The hood should be removable.
@trekitt4 жыл бұрын
There will always be a compromise between a hood/collar providing secure protection in extreme weather and being comfortable to wear when it's not raining. Separate collars and removable hoods, by design, simply cannot provide the same protection in foul weather. Personally I'd always opt for better weather protection and put up with a bit of flappy fabric when it's dry. Thanks for watching and for your comments. Paul.
@highentropy24685 жыл бұрын
I just can't justify the price of some of the higher-end branded waterproof jackets when brands like Regatta are producing very similar products with the same features just without GTX materials, all at a fraction of the price.
@trekitt5 жыл бұрын
For the average user who's using the jacket for everyday use, dog walking and possibly a small hill or two every now and again, cheaper products such as the one mentioned above will suffice; for those who are frequently in the mountains during harsh conditions, those products unfortunately won't cut it. The extra money goes towards tougher fabrics, more breathable and long lasting membranes, paying athletes to test the products before they reach the shelf, constructions to increase breathability, etc. It's unfortunately all-too-common to see cheaper jackets fail in the mountains, occasionally resulting in a mountain rescue call-out.
