Hi Boyd, Great video and it will come in very handy when I get to mine. Re-watching the video series/update you did last year for the TOS you mentioned you will be doing an update on how you are now doing the Refit/A model. Is that still on the horizon?

Great video as usual Boyd, you don't have to be sorry, like you said other projects can take over sometimes it's very understandable. I got one question if you have time to answer it, I'm planning to buy a bench power supply soon and I wonder, what type of power supply should be enough for model projects? Like yours for example what are the specs for your power supply?.... Thanks and can't wait for your next video.

I believe the unit I have can go up to 30 volts dc and 15 amps for load. It's more than you'll ever need for lighting models. I got it off ebay for around $50.00

Hey Boyd I was wondering when you light up the fan tail approach lights, have you tried a single 3mm cool white bulb? There is a hold molded into the engineering bill halves under the shuttle bay that I used to mount a 3mm cool white bulb that life up the fan tail very well. I am happy that you did this video because I plan on building another TOS Enterprise and the method you have shown in this vedeo I plan on using in my next build. Thanks for all of your tutorials I have and am using your technics on my 350 builds. I'm currently working on the refit. Keep on modeling
@TrekWorks
@TrekWorks 3 жыл бұрын
I use warm white for the fantail lights because it keeps the colors looking more rich. I've found that using regular white washes out the colors. When I tried to use a single bulb it made the center too bright and the edge lights too dim.

I don't know if you've heard about LED Filament strips, I just learned about them myself. It's like spaghetti noodles that glow like Wonder Woman's lasso. They might fit into those really tight spaces better.

Nice to see you back, Boyd. Great timing with this video. I'm just scratching my head on how to light the shuttle bay. I came to a similar conclusion. Question, how would you then light those rear windows above the ion pods?
@TrekWorks
@TrekWorks 3 жыл бұрын
You'll need to place a couple of LED's or SMD's close to those window ports inside the hull to light them.

@@TrekWorks Thanks Boyd. I'll look into that. There sure isn't alot of room between the hull and the hangar bay walls

Sometimes I wish today's modelers could visit the 1960s when lighting a model was limited to "grain of wheat" tungsten bulbs. It would make them really appreciate the near-infinite range of options today. Can't wait to see that shuttlebay lit up.
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 3 жыл бұрын
There are still models sold overseas that use rice bulbs. The Bandai Star Trek models from the first decade of this century used rice bulbs; many people chose to upgrade to LED's for those kits. Also, you can buy vintage models with those rice bulbs OR purchase them separately. They lit the 11-ft Enterprise with Christmas tree bulbs in some parts, didn't they? I think the LED is just more convenient and generally safer. They don't produce so much heat and I doubt you're going to melt plastic with most LED's. The models built in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s could only be operated for so long with lights on because of heat issues OR they had an internal cooling system to draw off the heat.
@TrekWorks
@TrekWorks 3 жыл бұрын
Yes we are very spoiled today. I have the original release AMT Star Trek Enterprise & Klingon Cruiser kit's from 1968 that still have the original grain of wheat bulbs for lighting that they came with.

@markfergerson2145 3 жыл бұрын
@@AvengerII The filming models used neons and whatever they could get their hands on that would fit and yes, on time was limited and frustrated everyone involved. If LEDs hadn't cost so much in the early days I'd gave used them. I think the first kit I lit with LEDs was the first X wing kit, and that cost more than I liked. The tiny tungsten bulbs are still popular with railroad modelers for their light quality. I may go seek some out.

Hi, Boyd nice to see you back again. One thing that has always bugged me about the TOS Enterprise, if you look at the size of the shuttle isn't the shuttle bay control room far too small for scale.

I guess you can built those kits in your sleep right?. So when your naming the lighting products you use in these kits it's like your speaking Greek to me. Is there a catalog with the LED strips pictured etc. I can follow along with? I feel like I would be doing an injustice to my Enterprise if I don't light it in some way when I get the courage to get started.
