The Manticore (and Chimera) class has a very unique design feature. When at cruise (with its proprietary console equipped), it's in regenerative mode, constantly regenerating the shields. When tactical mode is activated, the armor plating on the nacelles slides into position, and the phaser lotus is activated. This special weapon is the latest adaptation of the dreadnought's phaser lance (All Good Things). It targets up to eight enemies at once, and fires several pulses into every vessel in range.

The Belly makes so much more sense when transformed into tactical Mode! In tactical Mode, the Entire Saucer section changes it's shape to show the Ships unique Phaser-Lotus systrem, as wel as rearranging the WarpNacelles slightly similar to the Voyager, but instead of going up, the Nacelles stay Parralel to ther Ship, while moving downwards. @13:44 - The Hull-Plating is from the Reputation-System, A Tier5 Reputation-Shield of the Competetive Maneuver-Shields. The Greenish Parts come with the Assimilated Console (Omega Force -Reputation), basically looking llike Borg-Techjno-Zits.

1. The ship is a part of the lifetime membership bundle and partially transforms into a tactical mode that lets off multiple randomly aimed phaser bursts at groups of ships from the raised parts of the hull. In STO on console, at least Xbox, ships that transform often get stuck in the triggered mode. Cryptic is too cheap to correct the coding to fix this. 2. In the storyline missions Nog is the Captain of the Chimera, the T6 version of the ship with the sensor/torpedo dome. 3. The green parts, we call them the zits, are a visual that can be left on or turned off when using the assimilated console from the reputation gear awards. 4. The version without the sensor suite is the Chimera Class which is the T5 version and it was the original version of this ship, its now on preorder from Eaglemoss/Hero Collector, they gave it a refit when they changed the cap level of ships to T6. I think that’s about it, I always am glad that the ridiculousness I’ve shown towards spending money on this game can be used for the forces of good, lol. The Manticore-class and its predecessor, the Chimera-class, can transform between a Regeneration Mode and a Tactical Mode. In Regeneration Mode, it gives the ship abilities similar to a science vessel. In Tactical Mode, parts of the saucer section move to reveal a weapons array called the Phaser Lotus, a powerful weapon available only to Heavy Destroyers.

I mean I gotta say seeing how Nog was captaining one of these and multiple Ferengi (non Traditionalists) joined the Federation it seems fitting that Ferengi tech which was mostly acquired from other species would find it’s way into this design.

That image at 12:00 isn't the Manticore, it's the Chimera class. The Manticore's predecessor, hence the lack of sensor suite and alternate bussard collectors. That green stuff on the hull is Borg tech from an in game console.

Ok this ships has 2 modes one is the compact sci mode the other one is where it goes into tactical mode the saucer opens up and the orange light is it powering up a ability it has which is a super phaser array.

I have both the Chimera and the Manticore Heavy Destroyers in game. The separation pic is when the ship enters Tactical Mode, which lowers and opens parts of the saucer in order to use the Phaser Lotus ability, kind of like Death Blossom. Also in this mode the warp nacelles lower. Had a hard time getting used to the design at first, but have enjoyed leveling it up to access all of its abilities. Also to note, the warp nacelles move closer together when the ship goes transwarp.

@13:30 you were wondering what the green things are: It's because he is running the Borg Assimilated Module on his ship which lets it sprout those borgy nodules on the ship. He's also using the original Tier 5 skin of the ship (Chimera skin) as opposed to the T6 Manticore. And in regards to the picture @9:30, that's the built in console ability "Phaser Lotus" after it's finished discharging.

Great show guys, keep up the good work... Agree with you this ship design is pretty awesome. Looking at the first shot of it (@0:45), I was thinking about separation as was discussed later on in the episode. If the ship is indeed capable of this, the whole top section could come away together with the 'sensor module' and top two warp nacelles to make a complete ship in its own right, the front having an axe type shape. This could open up more options to the crew when engaged in battle, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts...

Right, to explain around the nine minute mark, though I'm sure someone's already doneso. The Manticore, and its previous 'non refit' cousin, the Chimera. Do not have a 'separation' ability, instead, what you are seeing is the ship re-configuring itself to expose it's special weapons system. Called a 'Phaser Lotus' it is essentially the idea of a 'phaser lance' such as on the Devron type refit of the Galaxy Class, but taken into a multifire capable array series. The Lotus will fire around a dozen or so beam pulses at anything within the front 270 degree arc or so of the ship. When not in use, the Lotus Arrays are tucked away and hidden to protect them from debris and such.

around 9:30 the pic you were wondering about, that is the tactical mode. it alters the ship's appearence and changes some aspects of the stats, which I think is turn rate and damage. It also enables the phaser lotus ability which launches several powerful phaser beam blasts to several targets in front of you're forward targeting ark. It looks cool and sounds powerful, but isn't that much (to me anyway) unless supported properly with consoles and such. As of right now, getting it is very expensive (as far as the full package anyway) as it requires a lifetime subscription which cost's $300 USD (it sometime goes on sale for $200, but damn, it may also very with what country you're in). there may be other ways coming as I have heard from ten forward weekly that they intend to remove the subscription packs, so that may mean that they will release it separately with it's other contents which may be a good idea, because, as of right now, the contents of that subscription are not even worth the discount price

I have this ship in Star Trek Online. The Manticore, and its predecessor both have a unique ability as heavy destroyers to deploy a weapon system. The actual animation for it was not thought out but, the effect of this deployment is to show Phaser Strips. 9:28 to 11:28 in this video. Those strips allow for great field of fire front and sides and allow you to fire the Phaser Lotus. The Phaser Lotus fires at up to three targets and fires eight pulses per target. In game this is actually a super weapon as I have a Galaxy Dreadnought Cruiser and the Yamato Dreadnought Cruiser with the Phaser Spinal Lance that does incredible damage to a single target). However the Phaser Lotus does far more. In game, (when not with high end consoles, the Lotus is more than three times as powerful as the Spinal Lance against a single target, and it splits automatically to three targets. In game the Phaser Lotus can do over 70,000 damage between its three targets without high end consoles. I have heard someone say they pushed around 120,000 from the Lotus which means 40,000 on a single target, and many T6 ships only have 50,000-70,000 hull HP. The Phaser Spinal Lance of the Galaxy Dreadnought Cruiser pales in comparison to the damage output of the Phaser Lotus, and the Lance can only fire forwards while the Lotus has a similar arc to the standard Beam Array systems on the front. Throw in the multiple pulses and it is quite insanely powerful. Again the main drawback is the animation for deployment. It looks like you squash multiple decks because a part that goes down does so before another part goes out. If you would like, I could do a video of the Galaxy dread, Yamato Dread, Manticore, and the predecessor (whose name escapes me) to show just what the lance and lotus can do. Yes or no for such a video? Or just one showing the ship a bit more and the animation?

I know this is kind of past the point where this episode went up, but I thought I'd answer a few of the questions posed here by the hosts... and speculate where needed. The shot of the saucer with the "glows" is the powering up of the phaser lotus. In those spots where you saw "phaser strips" is actually the separation points to where the emitters for the PL are exposed to space. In defense mode, the saucer seals back up and power is rerouted to the tachyon emitter arrays to knock down the shields of multiple targets. Reason for the kind of "pregnant" look of the deflector array/engineering section - more than likely, the designers at Cryptic got tired of making every Fed vessel an evolution of the whole Sovereign/Intrepid "let's slim things down until we eventually get to the Universe class." The fanboy in me (and therefore, speculator) says the extra depth of the engine section allows this ship, and it is TINY compared to other bruisers, to house a warp core and auxillary power system that allows it to punch above its weight class. Once I had this thing kitted out, it was far more powerful than Defiant and Prometheus variants with the same weapons/engine packages, and they're in the same STO design lineage of tactical-heavy fast killers (escort, raider, destroyer). The "domes" on the side of the dual engine pylons are presumably the rotation points for when the warp engines extend away frm the body when it's ready to go to warp, in a fashion similar to the Intrepid nacelles do. The engines separate before going to warp, but only in transition animations (as in, "oh, we're getting ready to go somewhere") but usually aren't seen separated when moving across the astrometric maps at warp. Likewise, when a Manticore - or it's predecessor, the Chimera - comes out of warp in a star system, the engines are seen being drawn close together. The presumption here is that this is a defensive tactic, making it harder to use a weapon to shear the engines off at an extended connection point and protecting them using the extension/retraction assembly. Could the saucer separate, or could the ship fight in multi-vector? More than likely, it could separate, leaving the phaser lotus with a single emitter which would just be used as a phaser lance, since the arrangement of the saucer is designed to act, presumably, as a network of capacitors that channel the power of the lotus on multiple direction. So far, Cryptic has not given us a version of Chimera/Manticore that fights in multi-vector. So, my guess is that this class was, in theory, a hybrid of Defiant and the larger cruiser classes, potentially giving Federation escort/destroyer crews a fighting ship with a potentially higher survival rate. Regaring the "green" around 13:00 - there are mods in STO, that when the visuals (or "skins" are enable) can make a vessel look like it's using adapted Borg technology, available as you craft up along the Omega Task Force chain of reputation, so those might not be weapon strikes, but mounting points for adapted Borg tech. Also, the large weapon shots look like concepts for the phaser lotus. Now, as all Manticore owners know, the saucer has to be open and fire along the forward, forward-port and forward-starboard separation points. The orange streamers coming off the back are based on the few impulse engine classes that give burning streamers, like the Breen cryo engine mods. And, the lack of the round pod makes it look like it's a Chimera, instead of a Manticore. However, the Chimera skin is available for the Manti after you ready it at ESD or other friendly starbase. Also, I haven't seen anyway to get one of these except to be a lifetime subscriber. If you find out, that would be a scoop and a half. And lastly, if you do get one, you'll notice that this bugger has what's known as the "advanced" quantum slipstream drive. In most cases, that only means you get to stay in slipstream longer and get to places on the map faster. However, if you're one of those folks who likes to farm Energy Credits using the mission "Tour The Galaxy," this ship can mean the difference between making 400,000 EC per day to a million from that one mission, especially if you use the fleet impulse drives that give you faster transwarp speeds when slipstream isn't engaged. I currently fly the Fleet Manticore as my destroyer of choice, and with the right consoles, it punches WAY above it's weight class. The escort line in STO tends to favor captains who don't like the tank thing and want manuverability and forward firepower, giving the ships a kind of "fighter" feel to them... a la all the scenes in DS9 where the Defiant was basically machine gunning everything in sight with its pulse phaser batteries. Also, Cryptic added the heavy escort energy weapon mount to nearly all ships in the escort/raider/destroyer line to give each one kind of a "mini-lance" weapon, and make the class a sexier get. Anyway, better late than never with this... U.S.S Nergal, signing off.

This ship does not separate, it has various positions in which the ship changes shape for what is needed. The picture where it had changed shape was to deploy its special weapon called the phaser lotus, basically the saucer opening brings out the phaser strips for the lotus gun. That deployment also added extra power to the weapons. The standard look gives more power to shields and shield regeneration. Also the warp nacelles contract in close before going to warp, similar to the Intrepid class.

As a player of STO I can help with some of the details of this ship. The ship is a hybrid between Engineering (think toughness) and Tactical (warship). It can change modes, and when it does, the ship articulates. The warp nacelles tilt down (like Voyagers, but the other way), and the saucer will compress (the screen shot with the glowing copper lines). That exposes the "Phaser Lotus". The Phaser Lotus is an area denial weapon. It fires in a cone in front of the ship and any target available. It is stronger than normal phasers, but can not be aimed except by turning the entire ship. When reverting back to cruise mode, the saucer expands back to normal, covering the Lotus array, and the nacelles and struts return to the cruise/horizontal position. Also, when engaging the warp engines, the struts and nacelles with articulate upwards, like Voyagers, and the nacelles will compress together to form a pair of larger ones (from 4 to 2). The "fighters" in the dynamic shot are Borg tech on the hull. In STO the fleets are experimenting with a controlled use of Borg tech to increase the firepower of the ships. That shot is from in game as well.

11:00 - No it does not separate. That is the Manticore’s “Destroyer Mode.” The top of the saucer rises up and the 2 sides extend out, exposing the Phaser Lotus which is basically just a giant overpowered phaser array that destroys anything in that front 270 degrees firing arc. Also you guys didn’t notice but the nacelle struts turned downward (they are adjustable like Voyager’s) and the nacelles themselves got shorter and moved farther apart. 13:31 - One thing you guys need to remember when doing STO ships is that the Borg Assimilated set is one of, if not the most popular customization sets in the game. Everyone who has played the game has at least seen one other player on every map flying around with it. Even if you can’t see the assimilated sensor dish, if you see green glow-y and foggy bits, it’s more than likely the ship is equipped with the Borg set. Also the ship you were looking at in that picture wasn’t the Manticore, it was the Chimera-Class Heavy Destroyer, the predecessor to the Manticore (think TOS Connie vs. Connie refit from the movies). And I know you guys don’t like to do a bunch of research for these mission briefings; you save that for full episodes. But you should at least go in-game and read the short little 4 paragraph summary of the ship. It would help with things like that.

Thats fair enough, I personally prefer seeing their opinons coming into it cold first off because its kind of interesting to see it from star trek ship fans without them having any preconceptions from in the game. Since its fairly easy to just look up the info myself about it, its alot harder to actually get a pure first impression, so to me its the best of both worlds first a off the cuff view then secondly a full on information episode when they get around to it

It is a "veteran" or "forever" player reward ship for people who have played for a year or two, or bought a permanent subscription. A "Heavy Destroyer" and is a 3 iteration from the original ship. There is a tier 5 class and the Manticore is a Tier 6 that came out with the recent expansion. I kind of wish that deep secondary hull was blended in a bit further back so the hull wasn't so dramatic. The ship is capable of slipstream, so the 2nd blue band in the deflector is probably representative of that.

About the hull. The ship has two options a tactical and a defense. The saucer section divides and extends in tactical mode. The animation in game looks cool and definitely pimp.

The shot with the 3 orange arcs is in tactical mode. The ship mounts a special phaser suite that effectively mobilizes phasers (and firepower) that would only be found on a starbase.... The green greebles are part of adapted borg technology. It is an earlier version (pre-upgrade) of the class called a chimera. The chimera, griffin and other versions of that class are only available for a lifetime member, access to the class will cost you a pretty penny.

picture 7 is the combat mode of the Of the Manticore class. The lotus Phaser array.. in truly massive phaser array built into the saucer. Picture 8 is of the Chimera class, the predecessor of the Manticore. No pod, smaller impulse engines that are built into the pylons and though you can't see it from this angle a redesigned shuttle bay. The two Green nodes on the saucer phaser area is visual effect when you equip a universal Borg consolw

The phaser lotus is a wide arc, multi-targeting version of the Galaxy-'s big gun. Love the idea, but not the slicing around the primary hull. I believe there are only 2 variants for the ship parts, the original Chimera class and then the Manticore. There might be fleet variants, but I don't really do fleets.

So the thing about this ship in the game is that it's able to rearrange its hull structure slightly in order to reveal and use its phaser lance arrays. So when you activate the ability it's basically a series of random, rapid fire phaser lance shots. And that last image that you thought was an out of game image because it looks so different It's actually an in-game image but maybe slightly photoshopped of the other variant of the Manticore class which is the Chimera class.

The engines (nacelle's) in one pick look separated more as if the distance in between them increased. Maybe a different artistic take on the design, or it's a part of warp field control and efficiency? Love the design. Maybe just a bit of opening up of the main deflector unless it looking like it does is a part of the armor for battle. So far my favorite STO I've seen so far. I was also wondering if that sensor pallet is one at all. It might very well be a torpedo launcher that spins and rotates up for a better arch of firing angles. It would have to have built in auto locks for when it aimed or "swept" near the nacelle's, yet wow what a cone of torpedo protection, defense as well as offence! Good presentation guys.

the ship is available level 40 for life time players the one you wear looking at in the first pick was the fleet version ow and at 9:30 that glow was the ships special weapon that you can use in game it's kind of like the galaxyx having the maine weapon it uses ti blow up the 2 klingon nag'vars but it can hit all ships in it's arck at the same time hope this helps ow and the ship at 11:29 it the level 40 ship NOT the fleet ship you can get later in game

Earning it requires being a Gold Subscriber for 1000 days or buying a Lifetime Subscription which grants all Veteran rewards immediately. Those Lifetime Subs do go on sale every few months. guys....its a slipstream deflector. thats a huge phaser beam projector....you need to review sto ships along with someone that knows how they work also it wouldnt hurt to find the in game ship description. that would explain a lot for you. 11:46 that IS an ingame screenshot! you really need someone who knows the game...those green things are borg tech adapted to the ship.

I love this ship, the tac mode is a deadly mode for the enemies. Each race gets their own version of the Manticore, and those who are seeking to obtain this ship need to become lifetime members of STO. The better quality pics may well be in-game graphics. My computer doesn't like it but you can manually change the render-scale of the game up to x2 (or more) of your screen's pixel count, giving a much better quality image.

the Round "thermostat" are upgraded Warp Core Deflection Crystals. similar to the Cheetah class fast destroyer and the Stargazer .

Without the transformation mode (which you guys either didn't notice or didn't discuss, not that I play STO) the ship looks good except for the funny looking secondary hull. It's basically a gimmick'ed up Constellation class. Other than that weird sensor dish it looks great. In tactical mode it looks slightly better, but the "extending out the warp nacelles" reminds me too much of X-wing. :D But I can see some treknobabble where the extended nacelles give it better warp geometry or some blah blah like that.

This Manticore ship looks pretty cool, but uncertain about the sensor dome-pod on the top of it. With its designation as a Heavy Destroyer class, these ships are usually a little more compact than the cruiser/battleship type starships. Great ship overall.

I want this ship, not from the video but its perfect for my play style and load out. Funny how they talk about its appearance but the ship itself has a tone of versatility. A lt. Commander universal chair as well as an ensine uni chair with a command seat. I like the defense tactic with its tetryon clickie which is perfect for my build style. Too bad the only way I can get it is to drop a life time sub payment. Not sure it's worth it even though there are a tone of other perks with the lifetime sub.

I heard two random 1 second audio loss from Samuel, but oh well it wasn't important information... I like the top-front view of the ship, the secondary hull is a little to tall? for my liking but if it was a bit more sleek like the sovereign hull then it'd look appealing to me.

I'm enjoying seeing these ships and I know that this particular episode is several years old at this point. But, I would've loved to hear some actual stats on this ship and not just discussion about the design and speculation of its operation. Maybe this channel has changed in newer episodes. But, hearing more info about the ships would be great without looking them up .

So the ship isn't separating, it has a transformative mode. In its default state, Regenerative Mode (which is most of the images you have) it functions slightly more science heavy having a tetryon shield sucker ability. When it transforms into Tactical Mode, it opens up a BFG Phaser called the Phaser Lotus and increases weapon power. The Phaser Lotus can target a number of different targets and fires off a barrage of Phaser Lances (think the one on the Galaxy-X) in a 240* Arc. The ship also has variable Pylons like the Interpid-class, with different positioning for Tactical Mode, Regenerative Mode, and at warp. Besides the "Gut" of the ship, there are some complaints that Tactical Mode actually withdraws hull plating in an impractical manner (slicing through Escape Pods, seperating several decks, some decks are clearly meant to be empty to dump decks that are moved in tactical mode) and the "Pod" Weapon Platform (its not a sensor pod, its a weapons module) was added to the Manticore Variant (the baseline model is the Chimera) to give it a bit more balance. Fun Trivia: the design that became the Chimera and later the Manticore were originally designed by a fan for the Design the Next Enterprise Contest. While it lost that contest, it was added as the 1000 Day Veteran Reward. The Manticore Redesign of the model is by Thomas "CrypticCat" Marrone.

I haven't seen it *quite* correctly explained here, so I'll be the pedantic nerd I am and explain - yes, this and the Chimera Class destroyers have a tactical reconfiguration option - the Tactical Mode is the one with the glowing lights - the saucer hull slides apart exposing the 'Phaser Lotus'. Ever seen the Last Starfighter? Remember Death Blossom? Think that.

I am commanding one of these right now. She is a warship!!! She can go on deep space exploration. But she can handle herself she hulks all out and annihilate anyone coming for her!!!. Ablative armor, hull regeneration, and Is dynamic tactical system. DTS)

Have you guys improved your audio systems? Your voices, particularly Samuel, are FAR clearer than some past videos. Capt, your sound is usually decent IMO, but I often have a lot of trouble hearing Samuel clearly, even when I CRANK my volume. Not this video however, very clear and easy to understand. Anyhow, great work again, I'm so happy to have subbed back when you were really spooling up, and to see this channel grow. You deserve success, I appreciate all the work you both put into this channel, and IMO this is one of if not THE best Trek fan channel out there - as the tech side and especially ship tech has always been what I've loved most (Go DS9 for that!).

Yes the Manticore is a level 50 ship (T6), but the T5 variant the Chimera is available at level 40.

you gotta buy the life time pakage to buy that ship lol but its vey badass and theres two versions of it .. the new version has the cerculer dome thing on top and the accuricey of the phaser lance is better an more powerful then the first version lol. enjoy
