Again, I'm surprised that the pulse phasers bother both you guys. The original Enterprise fires pulse phasers in Balance of Terror to blanket space in hopes of hitting the cloaked Romulan Bird-of-Prey. Those phasers definitely were not beams. They were almost explosive like torpedoes. Starfleet ships seem to have a history of being able to switch between pulse phasers and beam phasers.

The Enterprise and Reliant had pulse phasers in WoK too.

I've been pondering that myself and it could make sense in the head of a designer that it might give the crew something nice to look at. Most bridge crews generally only get to look at empty space unless plot demands otherwise. If given a "Bottom towards surface"-position for orbiting (which, visually, would work best for her design) that location would allow for beautiful shots of looming planets, both in and out of universe. Basically, i blame the camera.

Those are exactly the words I used when I saw it. It's clearly capable of atmospheric flight. The only thing that makes me think otherwise is the red, typically for Tactical and Engineering. Maybe it's to hide the bridge during fire-fights. But, with space being 3D, the bottom is subjective.

Sisko's Defiant and the Sao Paulo (the replacement Defiant class ship he got after the Breen blew up the original) had just the pulse phasers, only the Mirror Defiant built by Smiley and the rest of the rebels had the beam phasers. They were part of the original design, but considering just how much firepower the Pulse phasers gave the ship coupled with the maneuverability of the Defiant Class, Starfleet considered beam phasers superfluous with the addition of front and rear Quantum torpedoes.

The only issue is we assume all TOS era ships look like something the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 spawned via kitbashing. Only the TOS Enterprise from TOS is canon. Saladin, Hermes, Ptolemy, Federation, Larson, Loknar (sadface), Northampton, etc etc...all non-canon. Unless it is the onscreen TOS Connie then it is non canon. We assume they all look like they use parts from the Connie it is what we have assumed since the 60's. Not every ship is gonna look the same as the Connie. Not going to be fully uniform using kitbashed parts in odd places.

Thank you for saying it. We really know next to nothing about the TOS era. We were only ever shown one ship out of a fleet of a few thousand and hundreds of designs. You take that into account and the visual update and everything fits. TOS was very 60's in every way, they worked with what they had. We have come so far there is nothing wrong with giving the general look a polish.

I have been subscribed since the second issue, but i am starting to get collector fatigue. I really want to be able to say that i have every issue (the numbered issues and specials; no way i'm giving them £50 for those larger scale ones when i already have Diamond select models) but at this stage, i just want it to end so i can be done with it. More and more of the recent issues, last 20 or so are just getting stuck in a box and not put on display as they are really starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel. I find it hard to believe that people have been crying out for models of things like the Voth city ship, Neelix's Baxial or those ugly ass freighters from Enterprise. Sulliban cell ship looks like a dogs toy! Really irritates me too that they have wasted 7 of 9 specials that have been released so far on ugly ships from the JJ universe.

Yeah. I don't have subscription but just watching IrishTrekkie and buying the ships I like that aren't too screwed up. It's too bad they are inconsistent with quality. I really like the NX-01 Refit, for example, but I'm not going to buy the Enterprise-C because it doesn't have impulse engines (I think that's the one). Still, I have to applaud their efforts because no one else is doing it.

Much more reminiscent of the old Enterprise than the D was. I would have preferred that it was the hero ship from TNG. I like the D, but it can be pretty ugly from certain angles.

Actually we DO know where the Bridge is - it's at the bottom of the Saucer. Given the small size of the ship, the giant Deflector / Sensor Dish (IF it is one, it looks more like a giant array of windows to me) and the position of the Bridge Dome (Bridge Bulge?) i'm wondering if the Shenzhou isn't a dedicated planetary survey vessel. (Yes yes, no up or down in space.)

You nailed it with the STO-look comment. The nacelles don't look right for this era in Prime, but does look similar to USS Vengeance nacelles - another "we're going more for Kelvin than Prime" look/feature.

I think the _Shenzhou_ may be a proto-Miranda. As in, she’s testing the equipment that may later be integrated into the _Miranda_ class. Underslung nacelles, red impulse engines that are approximately the same shape, pulsating phasers, primarily blue LCARS with greenish secondary colors, and similar overall shape to the nacelles (somewhat rectangular) with minimal glow. Only thing she’s missing is the rollbar. Actually, even the color of the dish makes sense given that TMP era nacelles had purple-ish glow to them at times. Although she also has some cues from the _Excelsior_ with the fins on her saucer section. Speaking of the saucer, I counted 12 escape pods hatches on one side of the saucer. Assuming that the 6 people-per pod figure is accurate, bilateral symmetry, that they only have those pods, and that they don’t stock extra pods to ensure that everyone can get out… that implies a crew of 144. Which would make sense for a _Miranda_ sized or even NX sized vessel (225 to ~243 meters) Also it looks like the outcroppings on the pylons are supposed to be the torpedo tubes according to the concept art at the end. They have a dark spot right at the tip which looks like a torpedo hatch to me. I'll admit, this is almost enough to win me over on the design if they go this route... still not going to forgive them for the bridge placement though.

I think that raised section in back is a Very Large Shuttle. Maybe an assault craft. I actually think the Shenzou is meant to be an intra-atmospheric vehicle, that's why the bridge is on the bottom, it has the large landing craft, and somewhat silly air fins.

I really really really like that they have dropped the big red animated blobs for the boussard collectors and the blue blurs for the warp engines. Much more TMP refit style and much more realistic and less cartoony! I like the ship just not for this time. As most people have said, have an issue with just about everything else about the trailers; message, actors, story, and era is very disturbing. But this ship is nice.

The big squary thing between the nacelles with windows on both sides - Are that not the "Atrium" we see filled with people in a couple of the scenes? Its big enough to be some sort of crew gathering room at least and it set below the shuttlebay. Could be a shuttle storage area as well thou.

TNG shouldn't be the only era with varying designs of nacelles.... but I'd still prefer round ones :p interesting how the name and registry is done sort of Red Dwarf style. The engine plasma looks closer to pink rather than red. Maybe it's supposed to be purple but it didn't work? No, definitely red. My eyesight playing tricks on me again. Some fan designs use red plasma to indicate that they're fusion powerd low warp rather than antimatter high warp. Hmmm. Doubtful that this much consideration has gone into the design, but I live in hope. Thinking about the Phasers, "The Corbomite Manouver" scene where the Enterprise destroys the warning boye... they're sort of pulse bursts, longer than the ones in this Discovery trailer, but definitely not the proximity burst of "balance of terror."

i really like the ship, has a nice nx evolution feel (look better upside down personally), the purple deflector is interesting (i would like to know more about this colour chose), as well as the warp nacelles . Something i would love for them to do is release a full info break down for the shenzhou (including launch date and place) as well as a ship deck plan, as long as it doesn't spoil any story points.

I present to you, Conan O Briens if they mated, This week featuring the USS Enterprise From Enterprise and the USS Normandy From Mass effect! I will say this though, I do like the idea of the TMP engines coming first before the TOS ones in this JJ Verse, as they just look weaker than the ones of that era, and always seemed like abit of a backstep in terms of technology. and these seem to be a good cross of the two. although I still love the TMP Enterprise, its just that well because of the way they handled combat in star trek 2, the enterprise and that style of ship always seemed weaker than their contemporaries, both past and present but that is just a chosen style so you dont end up having a lightfest just to say the engines are down. like they seem to be doing here.

Also the windows, they made a choice to change the windows from that style with the enterprise E, it was something that showed up in the junkball media video of it, as the windows of the D had no Depth to them, while on the E, it did, although ironically they kinda threw all that away when they switched to CGI. and never fixed the deflector dish so it was like it was on the original concept, the one you see on the Ex Astris page on the upper left hand corner when you go there, as they flattened it just to have that scene in first contact with it.

Interesting design. Looks to me like an NX variant or second generation model flipped upside down. I can definitely buy this as an evolution of an NX, except the nacelles. I would have liked seeing nacelles that were a missing link between the NX and Constitution class. With the nacelles as they are, they make this ship look more like a post-Nemesis era ship, to me.

I like the overall design of the Shenzhou, cause it does give the feeling (as you say) it is successor from the NX-01 class, but the textures feel abit too suited to much later eras. Tbh I would've liked it more if this was THE SHIP, the Discovery of the show, and the current Discovery design, was for the Shenzhou.

As for the shields, we never see a shield effect in tos or even the movies. And in the movies the graphic on the console seems to suggest a shield that contoured to the hull rather than the soap bubbles we see in tng+ And about the escape pods I actually like the shuttles in st09 better dor this era.

Looking at the ship and the structural design of the Perseus class in Star Trek online they both look relatively similar as far naselle placement and deflector placement. If this ship is relatively older then it would make sense for this to be the template of said Perseus class. (I would like to add that im not aware if the Perseus class is Cannon or not which is why make this deduction.)

This ship is gorgeous. With its bridge on the bottom - it makes it seem more like a "discovery" research vessel. Meanwhile - the actual Discovery - just looks like random bits and ends put together. Both versions of the saucer section are interesting - but overall - they took a design and revamped it worse. Now something to take note of from both of these ships. They have the same FLAT bottom hulls and the engines are very similar. Maybe they are a different family of Federation ships that are built with different Alien engines. Ie: Different ship yards with different technology and construction abilities? I’d rate the USS Shenzhou an 8… but the Discovery is a 1.2 as its simply the ugliest hero ship ever made.

On a serious point. How do you define which is the top and which is the bottom of a starship? One would assume that the bridge must be on the "Top" side regardless. Or!!! Is it aligned to which way the crew is standing!
