I'd love to know how quickly the FASA guys had to design all the ships in the book to meet their deadline. So many of their designs look rushed and not really thought through. I can see some of their ships, like the Northampton Class, being the basis of some really nice ship designs if they were reworked to make a little more functional sense.

Fleet support frigate. All that you guys have said makes sense. Beefed up shields and ablative armour. Articulated nacelles and arms. Industrial replicators, robotic arms, tractor emitters and worker bee fleet sounds just about right. Internal storage for over provision of antimatter and deuterium for refuelling purposes. Also emitter arrays for baryon sweeps. Capability to service all but the largest ships of the line. I could see this ship and its variants serving federation needs for a very long time.

I love when you guys go into the FASA and SFB ships. This particular ship always looked to me as a tow truck. I thought the nacelles move to the outside of the ship and the ship that gets towed gets tractored into the back, giving a snug fit. I have an easier time seeing her as a tow truck than a fighter. Don't get me wrong I'm from the same era as the captain, but I was exposed to the FASA and SFB ships in the mid 90's. So while I do like the old designs, I completely understand Samuel's reaction to these designs. Yes some of them come off as clunky, but there's some charm to them. Another great video by you guys, I can't wait for the next one that focuses on SFB and FASA ships again. Cheers

As a blue collar worker, I LOVE these utilitarian ships! They aren't meant to look good, they are meant to be workers. All worker class ships would need to look ugly for a reason. And this isn't that ugly. Compare it to an Antares class...its like one of those, only sleeker.

Stuart it was a marine assault ship. It carried two 500 man marine units, they were housed in the arms ( think shoulders) as they hang down from the saucer section. In the pontoons in either side of the warp nacelles housed training and transporter facilities. There was some fiction on this ship in an all FASA magazine.

I like the Andorian engine configuration. This is a ship that looks good from the forward elevation (Tron Recognizer, LOL), top elevation (frog legs), but like the Captain said, the side elevation looks off (like many FASA designs, too "tall"), and the 3/4 3D view leaves something to be desired...

This thing could have totally been built to support multiple missions. The large semi-enclosed space between the saucer and the nacelles could hold modular cargo/troop/sensor modules/pods (like Thunderbird 2).

Great show again btw, the design of the ships interesting, I can see how the nacelles work. An inverse field, think of tron. I’d have the saucer facing the other way, so it was above the nacelles. It would improve the side profile, it would look more aggressive also. I’d also bring the nacelles slightly further in not fully to the struts, just half way.

Each pylon would have to have its own warp-core. When you think about the warp core in the Connie once the warp energy leaves the intermix chamber it is pretty much a direct Plumbing straight up the pylon to the warp engines. Other ships seem to have a fairly straightforward path as well. I can't imagine getting warp engine power piped from the core through all the different articulation points and creases and folds and Corners to finally get it to the engines! For me this is one of those that you just look at it and say this is just too impractical to even try to invent a mechanical functions for nearly anything.

Since it's a Marine transport, did you think like the ptolemy class tug it is able to have switched out pods to carry containers that can carry fighters, hover craft, photo tanks, etc. much like the LST's of the Navy carried landing craft, and surface equipment into a front line unit. and that the containers be Hanger pods, supply pods, ect. were carried inside that area.
@Penfolduk001

My take would be that, If it's a troop transport, then otherwise sunlight fighters or shuttles could nestle inside the warp field and shield bubble, then rapidly swarm out when the starship comes out of warp.

There is practically nothing holding those Nacelles. I would change two things on this ship. 1st I would make the Nacelle Supports more of a semi-circle as apposed to angular beams. 2nd and most importantly I would make their attachment to the Nacelles thicker. Why you ask? the supports are thick at the top but are practically toothpicks at the Nacelles location.

It looks like it could deliver Starship components to another dockyard by hugging them under the saucer. or carry a large cargo module that sticks out in front of the ship. It also looks like it could recover a smaller damaged ship and tow it safely inside it's warp bubble with excess strain on the tractor beams or the warp field size. It could even capture and retain a pirate or foreign pirate ship intact and take the whole thing back to a starbase intact. It looks like it's designed to carry something under slung (much like the Franklin does). Also I don't object to the idea of a Nebula being able to carry another ships saucer - but I would suggest that would be a specific variant of the class rather than all of them. For example those Galaxy Class that were mothballed & assembled latter the parts might have had to be moved - The Nebula could be easily altered to carry another saucer and have the command functions in the ancillary pod and this ship or something like it looks like it's quite capable to deliver Nacelles or small hulls. Or even an entire Defiant class or Nova Class hull. There might be an unseen class that is suited to moving the bigger hulls or the smaller saucers. But I have not objection. As the one thing Star Trek tends to fall flat on it's face over is Logistics. Where as in Babylon 5 we see some of the equipment designed to do the heavy lifting (like the ships that build jump gates) [which would be an interesting thing to cover for Fleetyards perhaps]. But speaking of wacky uses for established ships - how about the Prometheus class used as a rapid rescue & recovery vehicle - it simply splits into two pieces and sandwiches the ship it's recovering between the two halves nicely stable and protected. Or it could be equipped with a short term "Fighter Module" that is a thick ring that fits to the shape of the hull between the upper and lower hull and is full of shuttles or fighters or a stupid number of troops or torpedoes. or evacuation space. That the ship can split like that has some possible unintended potential - likewise with the Galaxy Class it could have a "Combat Saucer" module as an option it would be smaller than the standard saucer with less crew but would have like fighter bays, 20 Torpedo tubes and small warp engines for extra power it would also generate a concurrent warp field and shield envelop to prevent some of the nasty accidents that cause Galaxy's to randomly explode if they get a love tap in the wrong way. A second Warp core would also allow the ship to maintain shields and prevent a secondary explosion from following fire and give engineering time to vent the plasma or eject the core (if they actually put a warp core ejection system in Galaxies that is). it would be criminal if they didn't add it as an essential feature to later models after so many of them randomly exploded. But anyway back to this ship - weird - yes - but an interesting weird.

Yttrium I'm afraid I'm forced to agree. I remember seeing them when they first came out and they always struck me as rather simple, shoddy looking and quickly put together, just to offer a variety of ships rather than focusing on the _quality_ of the designs. But like anything else, I do understand that if this was an important part of _your_ enjoyment of Trek, that it would be important to you just like to many people ships invented for video games, Comics, novels, or other forms of media are _absolutely_ a part of Trek to them, but for someone like me basically concentrated on the shows and the (pre JJ) movies, I don't consider it Canon unless it appears on the screen in an *episode or movie*. To me that trumps any other statements from a studio or designer which tend to change; while what appears in the finished product usually remains consistent. So to me _that_ is "real: Trek. Everything else is some level of fan conjecture. I fully understand that it's just my opinion!

This would be a better looking design if the saucer was mounted behind the big top bar and the secondary hull struts swept back instead of forward. Adjustable geometry nacelle struts would work great, too. It would look cooler and would be able to protect a salvaged secondary hull or saucer better. So with that in mind, why not go ahead and design a new class of ship, Commander?

well armed troop ship? The people who write these descriptions need to give more critical thought. I remember this from FASA, and I always thought the nacelles were meant to be protected, as well as having articulated struts. If the the volume of the horizontal, and vertical struts were measured, it probably has as much or more internal volume as the connie has in it's engineering section.

Looking in the FASA book it is called a Frigate but it is nearly as powerful as an Enterprise Class Cruiser: 6 x FH-11 phasers in 3 banks, 3 x FP-6 photo torpedo launchers, FSO Shield Generators with shield power of 16, FWG-1 Warp Engines with emergency Warp 10 and hull, and nearly identical Hull points. Calling this thing a Frigate is totally wrong. More like a Destroyer

I would guess if it is a troop carrier that large space would somehow increase warp speed or burst speed. Also if it is meant to be a QRF Marine ship, they would be able to sit side by side in corridor or compartment benches and if they needed to sleep role out their mats on the deck. They are marines after all, I seriously doubt they need swimming pools and racket ball courts.

According to IMDb, Quentin Tarantino's two favorite films are Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966) and Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982), which he references in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003). So I assume Tarantino making a new Star Trek movie is good news. As new Star Trek is always good news. Maybe Tarantino's take on Trek adds something new to the Kelvin timeline and then it can go where it did not go before. Trek of the 2020s will yet again be different. Hope they'll make it so. Edit: Some speculation added at IMDb www.imdb.com/list/ls025720609/videoplayer/vi1856944153?ref_=hm_hp_i_2 Quentin Tarantino thinks highly of TNG episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" as one of the coolest episodes. And it is. If that will inspire the movie, bring it on!

Hm, first impression is if they'd raise the engines in the middle to go upwards the side view would look better imho, like they raise the nedinges to be on the side in the middle kinda. Top view would look the same and in the front it wouldn't look worse too I think. Hm, also as idea maybe those pylons at the bottom could detach and still be warp-capable? Like a quite big drop pod? So the saucer would be for C&C and the troop deplyoment is via the pylons. Maybe have a secondary hull above the saucers and those docking arms going down.

It really doesn't make a lot of sense as a transport. A a repair tender, ok. It could hold a lot of parts and intermix shafts and plenty of torpedoes, but something that reliant on transporters to deploy troops wouldn't house them in the most undefended portion of the ship. I'd be surprised if it had signifiicantly more usable internal volume than a Miranda. The points where the nacelles connect make no logical sense unless they fold up and outward towards the outriggers. It would get the nacelles up and out of the way for a swoop and drop or swoop and grab maneuver, or if the ship was actually designed to land on water The only other thing it makes sense for is a mobile test platform to get pairs of nacelles synced up and ready to use as replacements or new installs for whatever class used them. being able to tweak the spacing also fits in with what have to be articulated pylons. The thin points the segments come to scream "SHOOT HERE" more than just about any ship I've seen. I know Stuart loves those FASA designs, but a great many of them don't make much sense, and some of the worst are just Saucers nacelles and other Connie parts bolted onto odd shapes just to add more volume. But the part that bugs me the most is that the forms don't have much relation to the function, and the idea that they're designed by non-humans doesn't work because unless they're not bipedal humanoids, physics, geometry, and the limitations of the materials and components will dictate certain things. If it's a Starfleet ship there are common parts you're going to use, and with few exceptions, it needs to fit inside Spacedock, or similar facilities. That said, this isn't the worst of the lot by far, but it's role doesn't match it's form. Its better as a repair vessel, mobile dock, mainly if the ourtiggers also articulated to cover the width of a Connie Saucer. (and as I type that you mention the same thing. Gotta love that.)
@Aeneas137
@Aeneas137 2 жыл бұрын
the reason there are so many oddities in the FASA designs is because the designers completely misunderstood the engineering. they and it's funny because it's such a screw up... the warp nacelle's just generate a warp field they don't create power and the impulse engine does not generate power it just gives thrust. the FASA designers seem to completely forget about the matter antimatter reactor.

Yeah well what the show says and what common sense says tend to disagree there. I think a lot of people want the MAKO's pushed forward in time as far as they can possibly get away with having them. But trust me I've sat down and thought about all the things one needs to run a civilisation (in science fiction terms) and specifically in Star Trek and there is a ton of things completely missing. The Military is just one of many. Ds9 hinted at that some of the people Nog was fighting with were not your normal starfleet security types. Also that person Jake met on a planet once seemed to be more of a space marine or Soldier type than a normal crew "Redshirt" type. Remembering SG1 that show had it's "Airman" who were functionally soldiers in the context that they were in - they just happened to be Airforce one (not Marines or Army) and I can see no reason why in a time period like the post Motion Picture era when the Romulans and Klingon's are still a bit troublesome - not to mention the Tholians and the Gorn & Orions etc.. it would be suicide to have such ill suited people as you see in TOS as your only force available - you do see more Solderly Security types in the later Movies though wearing helmets and proper body armour. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the only reason no one does dress properly is for budget reasons. They couldn't afford to design proper outfits, or hire lots of extra's so they didn't and they were probably right, it makes more sense to fudge it and hope no one notices than it does to use something recycled they could hire (like the Starship troopers costumes). But if we ever get Motion Picture / TWOK era content again I'd like that question to be one that gets properly resolved and if Nick Myers is in charge of that I'm certain it would be.

InventorZahran 327. Saying they didnt have a standing military flies in the face of what we see.... when there is war and conflict its the established fleet and personelle that are tasked with conducting that war. The Enterprise is often specifically sent as a representative of military power and often heads fleets of ships in combat. Your idea that they dont have a standing military depends on them raising a military force in times of war, but they dont. Even when total annihilation is entirely possible.

All of the Federation's starships were outfitted with various defensive technologies, such as deflector shields and ablative hull armor, and many of them also had various offensive weapons. However, these were intended for use in emergency situations, destroying asteroids or space-junk that posed a threat to navigation, or as a last resort when diplomacy was ineffective. However, these weaponized starships were not sanctioned as a military force, unless unexpected and/or unknown organizations (like the Dominion or the Borg) became hostile and dangerous enough to necessitate a full-scale war. In these rare occasions, Starfleet would effectively become the Federation's space navy, and some starships (USS Defiant, for example) were built specifically for this purpose. However, once the war was over, all Federation starships would automatically r=be reverted to non-military status. "Sometimes the best diplomacy is a full spread of proton torpedoes!" -- Chief engineer Montgomery Scott, of the USS Enterprise (star-year 2267)

Bloody horrible looking ship. It may have some very functional use that we cannot surmise, but on looks alone this ship makes very little rational or aesthetic sense. I really dislike many of the FASA "origami" type kit bashes and in all honesty, I think this is among the worst. Engines being that close together just doesn't make sense; if one is damaged it very likely would pass the damage to the other. Everything about it goes against one's natural tendency to arrange things in a more rational manner. I love you guys' work! Just in this case I think you didn't have much to work with, but still gave even this ship an excellent review with your trademark analysis. Thanks guys!

I just don't get why it's so TALL, though. What could possibly require that hight that can't be built into a regularly-placed Secondary Hull?

So glad to see you 2 talking about ship design for a while. Your ability to be objective as TV shows critics is lacking. Troupe Transports in the real world tend to have minimal crews to operate so they can maximize the number of Troupes and cargo but at the same time they are not heavily armed. I would expect crew quarters to be minimal and troupes quarters to be barracks like. this makes me think tug or maybe destroyer.

It was a Martian design, not Andorian :)

It reminds me of someone clapping their feet together. Or...if the Thing from....The Thing....could impersonate Starships, this is the monstrosity it'd look like when it reveals itself after impersonating a Connie-refit. Jesus, some of these kitbash ships people make.

I don't like the the 1st beauty shot because it seems like there's 3 different eras of hull material being used..

If Memory Beta is correct the Northampton is a Martian design and not an Andorian one. It's based on Andorian designs.

I think most of the FASA Starfleet designs look really horrible from some angle. I like this one from the top and the front, but from the side?

wingsabre on the other hand a ship like this that for one reason or another is a favourite of many fans is getting covered where otherwise it probably would have been overlooked. While it's not my cup of tea, I respect someone that is devoted enough to the Trekyards channel to pony up the money to have his favourite ship examined. :-) A truly cool experience and I'm happy for my fellow Trekyardian that is getting his ship(s) examined by the experts in the field! Cheers!

I'm no against donating. I'm just pointing out that if you donate enough, you could basically have them do an episode ship that's shaped as a blob.
