The B-52 will be flying for 100 years by the time it is retired. Also, the modern Boeing 777 looks surprisingly a lot like a Boeing 737, which itself came out in 1968, (and they are STILL being manufactured, 50 years later!) It's completely within the realm of possibility that things like spaceframes and nacelles would look almost identical to ships of the same class from 50 years prior, albeit with modern enhancements and upgrades: ie better coils, injectors, computers, and defense systems.
@watcherzero52566 жыл бұрын
You can also build a car in between 2 days and 2 weeks depending on production method, a starship will be under construction for 2-3 years and will have several years of long lead time components ordered before construction begins taking another few years. All in all from blueprint to completion it could take 8 years to build a starship.
@Mat0llig6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. For example, the Virginia-Class submarine was initiated in February 1991, and were the first US Navy warships designed with the help of computer-aided design (CAD) and visualization technology. By 2007 approximately 35 million labor hours were spent on designing the Virginia class. Around 9 million labor hours are required to construct a single Virginia-class submarine. The Virginia class is only 34-feet wide and 377-feet long... the size of a warp nacelle. Imagine the engineering and construction required for a full-sized starship!

The thing about Military Designs is that they don't change that much on the "Surface" of the vessel. Lots of changes are internally or in materials. Look at the B-52, on the outside it looks the same after 60+ years, but internally, it's quite a different beast. The same with many other Aircraft in the US Military.

So glad that's where you started off this video guys. First time we glimpsed it, I and a few friends were like, "wow, they snuck the Faclon in. Again. Only now it has nacelles." Barring some amazing reveal on the bottom like a secondary hull, deflector dish or something, it's really not that interesting, save as a shuttle carrier. The aztecing is excessive on this one, much like the rest of the ships in Discovery. You'd think by then they'd have more consistency in the panels they use on these ships. The inverted bevel on the saucer is Excelsior like, but also NX like, so I can let that slide. But yeah, it's just the Falcon with nacelles. Let's see what's on the bottom, then blow it up in spectacular fashion.

13:50 And here's one of my main gripes about this part of the discussion show. You guys are great, you really know your stuff, you're passionate. I've been watching for over two years now and there hasn't been a single episode I haven't enjoyed. But I just get the impression that sometimes what you're saying is simply just filler. This is one of those times. Samuel's got a point in saying a starship is bound to be more advanced than a boat or a car, of course it is. But as Stuart pointed out, real world battleships (and vehicles) can be incredibly complex pieces of technology. It just seems slightly baseless to disregard real world trends (like design styles) in terms of tech when discussing a fictional ship, of which the look is, ultimately, governed by a studio brief, artistic license, CG department etc...Again, you say it in every episode, you're theorising, and that's great, I enjoy tuning in, but it just occasionally feels like what's being said are just offhand remarks. Anyway, please don't take this as a slight. This was just something I've had at the back of my mind for a while. You guys do brilliant stuff on this channel and I wish you all the best for the future.

Discovery is really heavy-handed with the aztecing. It was novel in the Enterprise series, but now it's starting to feel really dull. It clutters and obscures the lines of ships and gives them a feel of being unnecessarily dirty and old.

It isn't the Narada's destruction of the Kelvin which changes the timeline. Something happened long enough back to change the timeline so that; 1. Kirk's father was assigned space duty instead of being home in Iowa. 2. The kelvin was designed and built as a much larger vessel than vessels in the TOS timeline. 3. The Klingons did something to jack with their genetics much earlier than they did in the TOS timeline. The Discovery Klingons look like metalized (poisoned?) versions of the Kelvin Klingons.

Perhaps a previous USS Discovery (and some others) were destroyed while under construction and the number was placed "on Hold" and used a Generation later. So it has a low number because it's a homage like the NCC-1701-A is a homage only this is a different admiral's idea. I wasn't able to find any Historical links for the Space Shuttle of Ships called Discovery for "Haloween" either. So it can't be a direct homage. Another possible explanation is that low number may be reserved for some Science vessels and that is why some of them have very low numbers. Or here is number reserved for a contract and if that Contract isn't completed the number becomes available again and can be requested by the builders. Some do hold some merit in the idea that the class ID or Mission role has some relevance to the first two digits. But that would require Constitution Class ships with a number starting with 10 to have a different mission role - or operate under a different franchise to the Earth Space Probe Authority. It's interesting to speculate anyway. As for the Edison I get a Nebula Class vibe from it.

The whole '50 year design' argument is entirely dependant upon what other related technological achievements are made during the time. Due to advances in aeronautics, within a twenty year period, we went from flying simplistic Biplanes to Jet Aircraft. We went from an average speed of 130 Mph to breaking the sound barrier within a generation. Cockings's arguments are entirely feasible because the Edison uses a basic warp engine, with the Excelsior being the test-bed for Transwarp. That's a period of over forty years, roughly the same length of time it took us to go from the first manned flight to flying faster than the speed of sound. The reason why aircraft are by and large unchanged over the last fifty years is because there hasn't been any other associated technological breakthroughs. We haven't invented engines to allow us to fly at hypersonic speeds, for example. Technical progress in any area is not a linear curve, it goes through periods of innovation leading revolution and then remains largely the same again for a period of time.

I can see this as a proto miranda.. A good airframe/ spaceframe can remain in production for a really long time.. The boeing B-52 design is approaching it's 67th anniversary and is STILL in production and multiple rebuilds, latest being an engine upgrade . The boeing 737 design has been about since 1967 and has been remodeled and refit several times , the newest being the 737 MAX in 2017 . Point being there is no reason an Enterprise era or discovery era design could not be used for several generations .. I could easily see the Edison being the first iteration of the Miranda class . enlarge a little , replaced the twin shuttle decks with compartments and relocating it to the center aft.. hang the engines down on short pylons(because of radiation issues ) .. Bob's your uncle.

I kinda like it. It seems like a feasible workhorse design for the pre-Khan timeline. The plating texture has far too much contrast though, which always makes these ship concepts look bush league compared to the movies. If it looks like a sea of metal rectangles welded together, it takes a lot of futurism out of the look. You don't really see Romulan, Klingon, or other alien ships having plates like that, so while it makes the ship seem realistic for 21st century humans, they look wannabe against the clean spans of material on alien ships.

There's plenty of views there, enough to have given you more meat to gnaw on. Personally, I like the Hoover-class. I think it looks rather unique, Starfleet and yet very unique. It has a downward descending neck that ends in a small secondary hull (pod) that then goes into horizontal nacelles. The neck is almost-Constitution and the nacelles are almost-Discovery. So, Foley/Cockings, go on the above link, and get to know what the ship looks from other views. There's bonus workbee concepts in that link too. It's a bit of a marmite design but until we get the full pictures I will reserve full judgement. However I do like it as a design you can see design features and where it would go in the 'future' I like how we can't guess what it's role is either. Could be carrier ship could be mining could be so many things. One thing noone seems to have touched on is where's the impulse engines though could they be where it tapers at the back that seems the most likely point for them or at the bottom of it tapers there as well. You could still have another shuttle bay then. I disagree with your design issues. Designs can be around for years and years B-52's, 737's, the de Havilland comet and no piece of machinery is simple. Heck the TOS Connie was around for 20 years before Kirk got his hands on it. Nearly 30 by the time of its major refit and then that one/design was around for another what 20 ISH years. When they did the Connie refit as well in canon it's said Kirk, Scotty and decker worked on the refit closely from the design phase onwards working with current designs or newer designs and adapting them or using the ones they think worked best from their own deep space experiences/long missions. So could easily make sense that some of the designs had been around a while. The more they overthink the plumbing the easier it is to block up the drain

To me looks like a pseudo Nebula class. Instead of shuttle bay doors, those could be big sensor suites, it's supposed to be TOS era so a long-range sensor would need some big housings, and the indentations behind the bridge section would be where you place the mission pod as the one we saw Nebulae using. Nice design but is a shame someone like Eaves working under the poor visual direction of STD. They are making Star Trek look generic instead to keep or create a unique visual language as all Star Trek series did prior to this one.
@kylestateler6 жыл бұрын
It looks like they tried to make a bunch of new Starfleet ships and then made them look really dirty and old. I assume this comes from Star Wars inspiration. I fear the producers are just trying to visually sell Discovery to Star Wars fans. Even then, I doubt it’s working out.

The argument that a space ship is more complex is wrong. You want things to be as simple as possible on a space ship because you don't want things failing ever and the way you do that is you make it so there as few moving parts and as simple as possible. Navy ships and cars are hyper complex comparatively to what a spaceship should be, because they don't have to worry too much about points of failure.

It has never made any sense that the ships in ST were supposedly built in numerical order. Look at modern military numbering. Each type of ship has its own numbering format. Also, those numbers have reset a few times (The Los Angeles class submarines ended in the 700s, and the next generation Seawolf class started at 21). Also, your argument for complexity was somewhat correct, but misguided. Again, take the modern military. Seagoing ship designs haven't changed much in 2000 years. Propulsion systems have changed, materials have changed, knowledge of fluid dynamics have streamlined designs, but the basics are still the same: a keel, frames, some sort of cutwater at the bow, and a rudder to steer. It's functional. External stylings are cake decorations. Prior to the 20th century, it would have been fairly common for a ship to be sailing for 30 or more years. Currently, we have ships still afloat over 200 years old. Why should ship designs change so rapidly? New technology has never caused a 10ish year old ship to be mothballed... that only happens for political or budget reasons, and the Federation doesn't use money anymore.

It doesn't really look like the Millennium Falcon. Sure, they have a superficially similar C> shape and similar coloring, but it is only a semblance. If it had a side mounted bridge or a radar dish, I could call it a copy, but this obviously fits into Federation shape lineage. It looks like the Falcon, if you turned it around, took off all its identifiable features, raised the back, and added nacelles. The resemblance is pretty tenuous.
