From what I understand, the fins on the Flyer and the pileons from Voyager had to move into position to create the proper sized and shaped "warp field bubble" around the ship for warp travel, but was moved in close at all other times so that the shield array could surround the entire ship thus, protecting those vital parts as well.
@RagicalPlays7 жыл бұрын
Those feel like low warp speeds. I mean the way it's shaped, I would've thought it to be a beast in terms of warp speed as well. But than again, those nacelles are tiny :P I guess that need for speed only relates to impulse power and maneuverability...

I would have liked to have seen more episodes where they were doing design modifications to Voyager as the need arose and new tech was being discovered. It was after all a ship cut off from home that would continuously have damage which needed repair and maintaining fleet specs would not be an option. The Delta flyer represents the kind of ingenuity that a ship in Voyagers situation would have to employ if she expected to survive.
@drmayeda19303 жыл бұрын
For the most part they could always trade for supplies they needed for repair and maintenance. The replicator would need large amounts of energy to create larger pieces of the ship. The main thing was maintaining the antimatter supply, and getting new delirium crystals.

With regards to the Aero-Shuttle, I read somewhere (and this may be apocryphal, but it seems plausible to me) that with Star Trek: Insurrection being worked on around the same time as discussions were underway about the Delta Flyer, that the ST:V producers were told specifically not to use their ventral launch effect. There was concern that it would step on the toes of ST:I's captain's yacht launch sequence, and they didn't want to cheapen the big-budget movie with a similar effect in the TV show. I believe they quietly ret-conned Voyager such that the Aero-Shuttle wasn't actually installed yet when its first mission started, leaving a place-holder, ship-shaped plug in the ventral area of the saucer, not an actual ship. So ultimately the reason for the existence of the Delta Flyer was because Picard had his awesome yacht launch sequence, and the producers didn't want the same effect used in two different places lest one feel like a ripoff of the other. I just wish I could remember where I'd read that though, so I could provide a proper citation.

Type 2 (class 9) shuttles had a top speed of warp 4 without heavy modification and special fuel(VOY: Resolutions/Threshold). Type 6 Shuttles (TNG: Parallels, Various) had only a top speed of warp 3. Therefore DF's top warp is something like 800-1,000% faster than a average Type 2? The Nova class science vessel's top speed was warp 6, so as far as a little ship goes this was a vast improvement and a adequate replacement for long range missions than a Danube-class which due to those little bobs and bits couldn't fit into the hangar bay of Voyager. At least I remember that being an excuse. As for that quantum warp, Voyager's warp core alone was large enough to do the modifications and hold the supply of (technobabble mineral) they synthesized. Therefore Voyager was the ship with the field, just too big to sustain it. The bigger ship had to bring the both vessels up to the correct speed and create the quantum field in order, as the DF didn't have a viable way of making a quantum field on it's own and the only way to keep in it in the field is for Voyager not to release the field which of course would cause Voyager to rip itself apart somewhere along the way. However why they didn't just hop and skip across space back to the alpha (though aren't we beta?) quadrant I dunno. Instead of one BIG jump just do a bunch of little ones until either the fuel source fell apart, or the ship couldn't take the stress of the micro jumps and they had to stop and make repairs.

Delta Flyer would win hands out with no problems. Unlike the Flyer the Raider does have defensive blind spots and because of the Flyers manuverabilty taking advantage of those weaknesses would be destructive to the Raider.

That is one thing I LOVED about the Delta Flyer. Flightsticks. Honestly, what self-respecting pilot would accept anything other than a proper stick? It is also why I loved the throttle-handles of the Kelvin Timeline Enterprise. If only they'd gone the full nine-yards, and given Chekov and Sulu a set of yokes too, to go along with the throttles.
@JamieRobicheau10 жыл бұрын
Just to touch on why they wouldn't have used the Flyer to go home and bring back supplies etc. Voyager would have needed to enter the Slip Stream with the Flyer each time and the risk of them falling out would be too great. Not to mention they dismantled the Slip Stream drive at the end of the episode. One of my favorite episodes too :)
@MzRtS129 жыл бұрын
Jamie Robicheau yup the Delta Flyer was only riding ahead in Voyager Slip-Stream. They would have needed to have Starfleet make another Slip-Stream Drive if they wanted to return to Voyager. However, in the pre-Starfleet contact days they would not have know where Voyager would have dropped out of Slip-Stream safely or destroyed as in the episode.

The voyager crew could have used the slipspace drive on delta flyer as a alpha quadrant courier or take the slipspace drive to star fleet to design a workable one. The Voyager hull was streamlined for atmospheric landing.

Cruise at warp 3, max of warp 6? I've never understood why shuttles are used if this is the case, as the main ship (Voyager in this case) can go *so* much faster - warp is a non-linear scale I believe. Exceptions being taking a shuttle to places where it'd be dangerous to take the mother ship, but you'd always see shuttles off on their own in the middle of nowhere.

My headcanon on the window design is they used what scraps they had laying around, and created a design with connecting metal.

I think it was supposed to be "cir-cum-feren-tial", meaning "laid out around the circumference". I'd say this bit of technobabble wanted to say "we know this thing is too small to reasonably have a reactor of this power, so let's say it's laid out in an unusual way (chamber around the inner perimeter of the hull somehow?), to maximize its volume, ergo increasing power capacity."
@therichuation6 жыл бұрын
This was the first time I'd heard of that type of engine but what I honestly started thinking, with the comparisons being made to this being "Tom's Hotrod" was this was supposed to be the fancy sci-fi version of a Hemi engine....

Just imagine what the Delta Flyer could do against the Borg, Romulans, and other bad guys with Admiral Janeways 25th century armor, stealth cloaking technology, and trans-phasic torpedo's. I don't think I would want the neural interface and synaptic transceiver device though. I would be afraid the Flyers Borg tech would try to assimilate me through it.

Voyager's engines aren't unnecessary and complicated. To date it's fastest ship in the Fleet, warp 9.975. Their repositioning allows for a streamlined flight profile adding to efficiency and stable flight. Returning to sublight the engines descend to allow the impulse engines to trust against the ship's proper Center of Mass..
@saquist10 жыл бұрын
The Aeroshuttle was likely only a "non-flight test article" like the one Enterprise was given during it's construction on Page 17 of the TNG: Tech Manual. Voyager was the first ship to be tested in Deep Space and according to my studies both Intrepid and Voyager were completed in 2371. If Excelsior had Trial Runs in 2285 but was only sent on missions by 2290 (When Hikaru Sulu took command, then likely Intrepid was still being used as a test ship itself. I'd like you guys to dig little deeper and streamline your content but otherwise good work.

I watched one or two episodes and I wasn't too sure about It but after this episode I'm totally digging it. Delta flyer was the shit but I think the Maquis raider would win because the Maquee have veteran warriors as crew and thus would never fight fair and only attack from an ambush position giving them the advantage = Maquee raider for the win. Sorry I thought about it and even tho I love the delta it just makes sense that they have the battle experience to win.

Don't Know if any of yall play STO, but there is a reason all i use for shuttle is the Delta Flyer. The Intrepid engine design was "supposed" to limit damage to subspace. I think the Delta Flyer has a poor layout and lots of wasted space. Look at the bridge. Big open space towards the back. Now what is up with the hallway. Why make it so wide and not just make it a room? What are those two compartments off of the hallway? Or is one off the hallway and the other enterable from the bridge? Are those rooms? Storage? A bathroom? Now for the cargo bay. It should be larger than the bridge. Where are bunks to sleep for extended missions? A table? The biobed is a neat touch at least. Are the escape pods under the floor of the bridge? Would be nice to see a hatch to that. Anyways, just a ton of wasted space. Cool looking layout but that's about all it is.

I was always confused by the crew of Voyager feeling they needed to build a new shuttlecraft from scratch, with all the time, effort and materiel required, when they had a perfectly useable vessel they brought with them. Namely the Aerowing. I always believed that the makers of Voyager really lost out by not using the Aerowing, am glad you guys touched on that. With regards to the Delta Flyers design aesthetic, it always reminded me of the Nova class Equinox and especially the Dauntless as well as a the Prometheus.
@jasonmccabe59157 жыл бұрын
Now did Voyager actually have the Aerowing, or did they just have the docking slot for the Aerowing? We never did see it in the show, and with their limited resources don't they thing they would have used everything at their disposal? I have read a theory that Voyager launched to save Tuvok before the Aerowing could be installed, and the bay was closed with plates. I also heard a story that it was a decision from on high that the Aerowing wasn't used because they were going to use the Captian's Yacht from the Enterprise in the movie. What do you think?
@SkyCharger0016 жыл бұрын
I have a theory about that: what if the Aerowing was a casualty of the caretaker's actions?

Except that the Aerowing was used in a comic book set in 2374. So it was intact.
