The Galaxy-I class was the one we saw in TNG. The Galaxy-II class was a refit for the Dominion War which featured additional phaser arrays on top of the warp nacelles in addition to most of the internal scientific equipment being removed to increase power efficiency & make more room for troops, additional torpedo storage, & other things needed for the war effort. The Galaxy-III is the one we saw in TNG:AGT.

I like to think that should it have been needed, we could have seen early Galaxy III models if the Dominion War went on. Maybe not as powerful as the All Good Things wiping out Negh'Vars with ease, but a definite step up in firepower to try and bring it in line with the Sovvie.

Hi, new here. Regarding the Galaxy X from online (timestamp 26:00), it almost looks as if the saucer is "undermounted" to the neck. The curve of the structure on top of the rear saucer is reminiscent of the attachment point that fits into a slot on the underside of the standard Galaxy class saucer. Not saying it is ... just kind of looks like it. Enjoying your channel, guys!

The Galaxy II has the updated nacelles as it was updated for the Dominion War. On the model version of the USS Venture, two additional phasers were added to the tops of the nacelles, but they were later removed in the CGI version. I also believe the fins are to seperate the phaser banks, as there are two sets on the pylons (Well, it most CGI models there are) Nice look at the Galaxy X class

This actually makes perfect sense for these new elements to be so jarring. After all it was time of great need so the Federation had to upgun and upgrade everything as fast as possible, so there wasn't time to make it pretty. Functional and doable was good enough. Blended with elegant and considerate lines of the original Galaxy it surely creates a dissonance, but reasonable dissonance and that gives this refit a very unique feel. I like it, albeit not as much as the original ship. Also, sensor pods explanation for the nacelle fins actually makes much sense (one of the MSD-like cross-sections).

10:00 I love the warp fins, as redundant as 1950s car tail fins it's a stylistic addition that gives the overly rounded Galaxy class design a sharper edge. 27:27 I've always felt that the Galaxy class bridge is too small like a doctors waiting room, I want the refit bridge shown plus the side consoles from Generations & a MSD glass panel that's semi translucent/see through between the tactical console & the captain (up on the horseshoe) that can change to show mission briefings. The main cannon does need to be sleeker and shorter but it's an awesome addition that could of been incorporated into the Galaxy wings portrayed in the Dominion War as a kind mission specific addition that signifies a Galaxy is in use as a battleship rather than explorer.

@Novaseta 8 жыл бұрын
The D refit with the additional strip was used in DS9. I can't remember if it was the Odyssey, or the latter CG models. I believe this started because of the platforms being still attached to the Enterprise model, from the Dreadnought version. So it was left on and assumed to be the refit, (in reference to galaxy 2)

The Galaxy II class is the same as the USS Venture seen in DS9, we only ever saw them on that ship and they re-used the additions from the Galaxy X but rotated 180°. I would assume there are other Galaxy class ships with that addition out there but they were never seen on the CGI models used in later DS9 episodes.

There are a few things that make sense here that you both seemed to be confused by: 1) Having the third nacelle mounted on the secondary hull with the standard two means that you do not need a redundant engineering section in the primary hull. That space is wasted space that can be allocated to a war fighting mission. 2) As TNG described it in the very first episode, the saucer separation was intended to allow the non-combatants such as family to be removed from combat. Yes, without warp capability you leave them at the mercy of the enemy if you lose, but by cutting your power by 1/3 you make more likely that loss in the first place. If the situation is such that there is no confidence that they will survive, then the best course of action is to retreat with the entire ship. 3) No Dreadnought should be carrying non-combatants. Or at least not enough to have to worry about leaving them behind when you go into combat. Frankly, no Dreadnought should even have a separable saucer. If it does, then it should have 2 warp nacelles for the saucer section, and 3 or 4 for the secondary hull, and the intent would be to have what is essentially two war-fighting ships act as one but be capable of splitting up if required by the situation.

The whole refit design feels like a rush job that was a product of that specific timeline. Starfleet finally realizing it had a problem on it's hands and having to rush through upgrades to bring an explorer ship up to full warship standards as they realize they were falling behind the more aggressive Klingons. I'd imagine that a lot of ships got clunky add-ons to increase firepower because strapping on modular upgrades would be easier than building whole new ships.

One thing that I noticed between the Enterprise, & its refit is that the back of the bridge in the refit is actually lower than the non-refit version. Also something weird is that with the main shuttlebay, is that it's almost touching the third nacelle. Not really convenient if you have to leave there in a hurry.
@NathanHeadActor

That chart refers to this as the Galaxy III because of a production error in a DS9 episode where they reused the model to depict another galaxy class ship but forgot to remove all of the additions from "all good things" (leaving the add-ons to the engines). So in order to include this new variant in the graphic you used, they referred to this DS9 variant as the Galaxy II class, thus making the "future" triple-nacelle variant now a Galaxy III class

trekyards, I've seen some Starfleet ships are just saucer-section only ships. And some Starfleet ships are small enough to have their engineering hull can be retrofitted on the top of the galaxy's saucer. you may experiment with those ideas. you may call it the "caleb", "Walden", or "Caleb Walden"-class, after me. Just a thought. great review of this ship, guys.

thought... seeing as Riker is a Five Star Admiral it's possible his entire staff is on board the vessel. this may be why the "Mega Cannon" is mounted externally with the extra shielding... the camel hump of the third nacelle could hold an extra warp core. While I understand Captain Foley's complaints that it ruins the lines but for me it reminds me of where beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... maybe in THIS timeline Riker became the direct successor to Picard and rescued it from the scrapyards by making it his mobile headquarters. I Imagine if the TOS movies 2-4 had happened differently then Admirals Kirk or (maybe) Spock would have retained the Alphabet soup free 1701 as their personal flag, ordering Scotty to make custom upgrades to it while the rest of the Connies were pulled from front line service.

I can see that one blueprint calls the items on top as a torpedo launcher and megaphasers but from looking at other cannon ships and the fact that the launched torpedoes would not clear either the bridge or the center nacelle I believe its actually a sensor pod and not a launcher.

I know I am a bit late but I was thinking about the 3rd nacelle and the megaphaser. and a schematic showing that the megaphaser was a deflector dish. one thing that might explain the 3rd nacelle in combination with the extra warp core and a possible deflector dish in the megaphaser would be if they used the 3rd warp nacelle to produce a warp field that they somehow channel into the phaser. they have around the beam emitter a deflector ring they would be able to send a tightly focused warp field and then send phased energy through that warp beam while using the deflector ring to remove any debris out of the path of the megaphaser. so you end up with a beam that is accelerated to warp speeds going towards a ship which would allow it to rip through the enemy ship's armor as though it were tissue paper. the deflector ring would keep any debris from flying towards the enterprise and would push debris from the explosion out of the path of the beam thus allowing it to continue through the ship and potentially into another ship. (the tightly focused warp field beam would also add additional structural damage to the enemy ship.

Also, at 9:30 something and a comment below that the third nacelle powers the Dirty Harry gun. I thought, and please correct me, that the nacelles were strictly for producing the warp field and that all other power came from the fusion reactors making up the impulse drive. So if the nacelles only have the warp coils, how could it power the big gun or anything else?
@ratchet6969
@ratchet6969 8 жыл бұрын
The extra Nacelle is not for power generation, Nacelles only take the power provided by the warp core and turn it into the sub space field used to go to warp. The main reason you would have more than two nacelles is for either creating a more powerful warp field to go faster or maintain a higher warp for longer (two is the standard configuration because it gave better efficiency/redundancy during the start of the TNG era). Later you would see ships with more Nacelles as the accepted level of warp theory improved, and they could make ships like the Promethus. When the ship is in the normal one peice confgiuration the warp core will be providing nearly all the power the ship uses. The fusion reactors in the impulse engines will be suplimenting that. But when the ship splits that big gun being attached to the Saucer can only be fed power by the Fusion plants. Noty sure they would be enough to power it and still maintain the rest of the systems in the Saucer.

The extra phaser strips on the nacelles on the "Galaxy II" isn't a fan extrapolation but it's because the USS Venture was seen with them in DS9. I'm guessing they didn't want to remove them with the other Galaxy X parts from All Good Things and just used that model in DS9.

re watching these older episodes and having new thoughts 1 Mega cannon. my thoughts on this is the reason for the bulk of the mega cannon is in addition to components for the cannon his structure ALSO houses a second Warp core that is aligned horizontally and that warp core is dedicated to either providing power to the cannon or in flight providing power to the third Nacelle. It should Be noted that I do not think these allows the X to fly faster, but maintain high warp for a longer duration

I know its a bit late, but in STO the lore for the Galaxy Dreadnought was based on how after the episode, Picard submitted a report to starfleet about the events of the episode, including Q putting Picard in an alternate reality for this latest test. This was why the crew had no knowledge of what happened. Anyway, Picard described for star fleet in full detail the Galaxy Dreadnought in the future time frame. The reason he did this was he had this feeling that Q, being able to travel through time as he saw fit, might have actually gone into the future to see what elements he would need to use to make the time period feel right. Anyway, after making his report he also added in that the Federation should try to not end up in a war situation with the Klingons. Additionally that starfleet should never make this refit of the galaxy class. Of course, however, things basically unfolded the way they did in that timeline with a few exceptions. Romulans got wasted by a supernova, not a super virus. Relations with the KDF went south with the return of the Undine. So, starfleet in all its "we know whats best better than you" mentality went ahead and using the information Picard gave in that report, did exactly what he said not to, and made an armada of galaxy dreadnoughts.

Galaxy II was shown in DS9, I think it was the Odyssey that was destroyed. It had the nacelle bumps with additional phaser banks from the Galaxy III. Also, the move from Heavy Cruiser to Dreadnaught would not be too big of a jump for a Galaxy class. The Galaxy class was already a very powerful ship, up gunning and adding the third nacelle for the ability to do longer runs at higher warp factors, maybe some upgrades to the warp core for more power (imagine a Sovereign Class core)... boom, dreadnaught.

As a avid Trek-Role-player, we tend todo the whole 'Trekyards' treatment on ships and bases all the time. Hey, that begs the question, are you guys gonna do Starbases too? They're just as cool as the ships! D: Anyway... the Galaxy-II (The minor refit in DS9), I've always been under the impression was to improve two things. Extra-Phaser Arc, and the structural weakness taken advantage of in the episode where the Odyssey gets rammed by the kamikaze-Dominion-Bug. They increased the S.I.F, as well as the build of the neck, to reduce the risk. I also tend to write that they updated the interior to match the Generations Refit that the D got in the movie (the different bridge, and darker interior look). Thus, I think of the Generations-D, to be the Galaxy-II, even though there was no change to the nacelles. But anyway, I love the Entente Class (as I name it, instead of Galaxy-X). Certainly my preference over the normal-Galaxy.

At 9:32, a good point is brought up. The Franz Joseph DN was built to be two 'lifeboats', both able to have warp power. This 'Galaxy X' does not do that. Without a 3rd, separate warp core, the Saucer section is raw fish-bait for sharks. Worse, it can't even fire 'the big guns' vested to it. So, "DUH" would have to be my critique of this ship build. Make it right, or don't make it at all...

A question i have with the Galaxy X 'class' refit is, Does the saucer section still have the ability to separate when needed, as it does on the standard Galaxy class? If so, does the phaser cannon detach with the saucer, or stay with the warp drive section? Something else, i had noticed that this refit has a small phaser array on the warp nacelles, just above the nacelles externally facing sensor array, on the 'wings' part.

What if, because they were in a state of war, the 3rd nacelle was kept in standby, and only actually utilized if and when one of the others took damage. Alternatively, perhaps it could be used to better fine tune the warp field generated by the other 2 nacelles, thus allowing an even higher top speed, for such a massive vessel...

When you think about it, the ships make a bit of sense. When you think about it, the Dominion War showed the need for a more heavily-armed Starfleet, and surely used up a lot of Federation resources. The Galaxy and Nebula classes are big, and have plenty of space for more weaponry. The odd looks even make sense, as the surviving hulls simply had more equipment tacked on, a much cheaper alternative to creating whole new ships. I would have liked to see MORE weapons, with this line of thinking in mind.

When I was a kid I thought this ship was the coolest thing! When I finally got the Eaglemoss model, though, I came to see it as...sort of a hodgepodge? It kinda makes me think of a Sega Genesis with a Sega CD and 32X attached...!

So did the TOS Dreadnought have two warp cores to allow the saucer to have warp capability after a saucer separation?

You mentioned a Nebula refitted like the Galaxy Dreadnought, like a Nebula X Class: I've seen a few picks around, though for the life of me I can't find any now :( but I did send a couple through to the STO development team. They said no, but I live in hope that that beautiful vessel will get to shine properly (science vessel indeed, *huff*) The last image, from STO, has the ATARI logo and is not representative of the current In-Game model which had a face lift recently to bring the lines and details more in-line with the TNG models, but even before that, the lance cannon was made much larger and more like the one we see in AGT. I agree that overall, she's nowhere near as nice a design as she could have been and did just look like the Enterprise with bits 'stuck on' afterwards. I know she was, but they could have put more thought into the shapes. Personally, I think the lance cannon should be integrated more into the saucer and I think there's plenty of hull space, with all the science facilities removed, to integrate additional torpedo launchers directly into the hull rather than behind the bridge. IMO the cannons and third nacelle look completely out of place and are entirely redundant, though I do like the bulked up neck with the additional impulse engines.

Have you guys made the full episode yet? Either way, as the model they modified was the 4-foot model which could not separate and was thus not shown on screen to separate post refit I would contend that saucer separation is not canonical for the galaxy x refit. the other two models from the first season of TNG were the beautiful 6-foot and more practical 2-foot model which both could separate the saucer. the way they attached the phaser lance, would have made it impossible to separate the saucer as there was no separation line in the gun.

For the Fans who come to this video. Galaxy Class 1 is Original Galaxy Class. Seen in Star Trek Next Generation as Enterprise D. Galaxy Class 2 is Dominion wars refit. Galaxy Class 3 is the All Good things Phaser Lance refit.

They should have used a roll bar from one nacelle to the other and the third in the middle/top of the arch. Would reflect the styling in the bridge

The Galaxy 2 class is probably the refitted enterprise from DS9 that got nuked by the dominion kamikaze attack. They had extra phaser arrays on the nacels.

Consider that the fins may have been useful for heat dissipation and shield distribution, functions that would be important given the ship's beefier, more combat-oriented, and more power-hungry design when compared to previous iterations of the ship.

My theory on the Lance is that it's a transphasic phaser. So it's bypassing Shields like the Duran Sisters or Jem'Hadar. The extra bulk is the equipment required to push it out of phase. Or something like quantum tunnelling. But more than just brute-force big phaser. Because that'd beg the question of why this wasn't done sooner. Unless a new warp core gave it the horsepower to support the megamega phaser. Can of worms!

5:20 this "Galaxy II-class" was seen in one of the Deep Space Nine Episodes, being docked at DS9. ( memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Galaxy_class?file=USS_Venture_and_Excelsiors.jpg ) I think they stripped down the Galaxy-X Model and maybe just forgot about removing the Nacelles? So we got a Galaxy Class with those thingies on top of the Nacelles in the Prime Universe CANON, not just in that Q *fantasy*(?) alternate future. That implies that this dreadnought Galaxy-X version might indeed have happened in the future... if Generations had not destroyed the 1701-D. 29:00 that is an oooold picture of STO, even still with the ATARI logo on it, they have remade the Galaxy Class a few months back (i've read), i have not played since then but the Screenshots of it looked a lot better. This is what the Galaxy Class looked like at launch 5 years ago: retribution-paladin.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/screenshot_2010-02-09-22-22-45.jpg THIS is the NEW VERSION: images-cdn.perfectworld.com/arc/12/a3/12a37636cc2a2772d2b4a5f4bd7f4e1e1427837862.png After 5 years it finally looks like the actual Ship! I would hope that the Galaxy-X was updated in the same way? But i am not installing the dilithium grind simulator again just to check this ;P

I would have preferred larger nacelles over a third one. The fins? I'd like to think they offer power to shields from tip to the centre of the belly.

The Galaxy II and III on the comparison may refer to the first and second generations of the Galaxy Class. The first six ships of the class including Enterprise and Galaxy were launched with another six space frames completed but placed in storage as they were deemed too wast full to be activated at that point. When the Borg attacked the alpha quadrant and destroyed the fleet at Wolf 359. The stored space frames were pulled out of storage and completed to re-enforce the fleet. These new ships would be part of the next generation (no pun intended) of Galaxy Class ships. if design variations were incorporated during this time then these ships would logically be designated as Galaxy Mk II or Galaxy II for short. The physical shape among other things change on the Enterprise between the series and Generations. To me this means that at some point, the Enterprise a Galaxy Mk I was retrofitted into a Mk II. As the next major refit we know of for the Galaxy class is the Galaxy X, it is safe to assume that this would be a Galaxy Mk III. I've seen the Constitution referred to as Mk I and Mk II so there is a precedent for such a naming system. Just my two cents.

AFAIK the Galaxy-II was a product of the Dominion-War... Galaxy-Ships that were allready in production at the start of the war that were rushed into service. They didn't bother finishing the interiors, leaving big parts of the ship empty. But they got additional Phaser-Banks on the top of the nacelles. Probably the interriors were finished after the war...

Galaxy Class II is an upgrade... There was a piece or two from the Galaxy Class 'Dreadnought' they did NOT removed from the modded model (which was a 3 ft or 4 ft model; the hero model IS the 6-ft model used in the first season of TNG and Generations...). These pieces are the extra phaser strips on top of the warp nacelles. The other modification to the Galaxy II is on the neck of the ship... It's colored dark to indicate armoring that was done to a weak spot on the ship's design. Remember what happened to the Galaxy Class USS Odyssey in an episode of DS9? That's why the neck was armored in the upgrade/refit!
