They are the trench crusade version of the real life flagellants. It would make sense the vatican doesnt back them because they are christian. Brief history. The Flagellants were a Christian religious movement in the Middle Ages who practiced self-flagellation as a form of penitence. In other qords they would physically harm themselves because they thought it would bring them closer to god.

I’ve been trying for the last 2 years to play tabletop Warhammer, mainly Age of Sigmar, but Army duties have kept me busy. I found the Kickstarter in its last week and ordered an entire Pilgrim army. I even decided that I want to try and cosplay a Trench Pilgrim this year. The art for this game is immaculate.

@davidiscool26 True! Christian Missionaries did some big work up north. Is arguably the reason we have the information we have on Vikings and Norse myth. And conversely why its kinda limited lol. Theres a prevailing theory that the Edda is largely influenced by Christian thought. So our understanding of Baldur, Loki, and Ragnarok is a shift towards a Christian view. Framing Ragnarok as a rebirth towards a monotheistic world. Which is why Baldur gets framed more Jesus like and Loki is so hard to pin down. Christians tried to frame him as a Satan like figure when he really wasnt.

I got recommeneded @scannerbarkly randomly for Trench crusade. I was instantly hooked. Glad someone else is taking it on :D the play test rules are fantastic. As a lefty I am obliged to join the court of the Seven-Headed serpant. I need a whole army of Hunter's of the left-hand path. I'm also just typing these names because it's like Trench Crusade looked at some of the shitty names GW has and thought, "nope, none of that"".

trench pilgrims our my favourite, do I tend to make mine as cartoonish ridiculous and edgy that can also border on being absolutely terrifying, and also call there crusades "peacekeeping" because they want to sound a little bit more modern. And one of my favourite parts is when we where doing a multi fraction campaign (sultans, heretics, new antoch, etc) I was in character and the speech went like this; "it appears the sultans false gods cant stand agenst heretics, such is the fate to be expected...this will be a long campagn, listen up, does who come to serve the unlyidying will of mighty god, we come together this night in the glow of the inferno under one divine reason... F*ck the heretics!" (cheers of the pilgrims) "them back stabbing digenrents have ruin this world, taking our share of donations from the dirty poor, and performing rites of ill and does windbags of the elite church are too busy bickering about necromancy to do anything of it, we are the lion of Christ not A BLOODY SCHOOLROOM" (pilgrims; "EVEN WE SICK OF IT AND WE MODERNIST!!!") "and what do the new antochs do in this war? too busy invinting POOR PEOPLE to large dinners probably made by more poor people" (Pilgrims; "THIS IS WAR NOT A SOUP KITCHIN!!!") Grew up Christian still kinda am and have always thought a grim dark rpg focused on the faith. Im a protestant but have studied the catholic side, alot of suffering and insanity lol. Tge mysticism in Christianity is some pretty metal stuff, like depiction of Christ ls "spirit form" lamb with its throat slit with 7 eyes and 7 horns it's almoat terrifying.

I dont know everything of the lore that has been released so far,but in the lore primer a shrine anchorite said to be part of the cavalcade of the tenth plague is covered in Christian symbols, so a wholesale rejection of the new testament seems odd.
