In 2012 & 2013 dubstep was absolutely everywhere, especially in SM Entertainment’s releases, and I believe it was when Skrillex was popular in the west.

Heck, Skrillex even produced 4minute's Hate. I also can't help but think about T-ara's music which had a handful of songs very definitive of that era.

@proboffensive
@proboffensive 7 ай бұрын
@@1__11 Olivia was one of the western girls who did the 00s pop-punk-esque sound, but I wouldn't say it was purely her impact: the early 2020s quickly went from the 80s to 90s nostalgia to the y2k revival to the early to mid 00s era, so the alternative genres of the latter were expected to come back

"Christian Horse Girl Music" 🤣 I died. The technical term, is it? 😂😂 As a crusty kpop fan I can think of a couple more trends from the 2nd gen/ early 3rd gen days. I distinctly remember a big band/ swing era in 2013-2015 since I was a jazz singer at the time so I loved it 😂: -TVXQ - Something -IU - Red Shoes (plus the whole Modern Times album) -Super Junior - Swing - Lee Hyori - Bad Girls/ Miss Korea (plus the whole Monochrome album) -Mamamoo - Mr. Ambiguous/ Piano Man/ Aah Oop - Ladies Code - Bad Girl/ Pretty Pretty - Brown Eyed Girls - Warm Hole - Ailee- U&I That's all the songs I can think of off the top of my head, but there was definitely a lot more

This is such an amazing video concept! Its cool seeing how the trends have evolved over time. Honestly I'd also put Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa (the album) as another huge catalyst for the retro revival of the early 2020s - arguably more in the west but she also did a version of physical with Hwasa and performed at a Korean award show during late 2019 saur 👀
@proboffensive
@proboffensive 7 ай бұрын
It's really interesting that both Dua and Gaga dropped their 70s-80s inspired albums in the first half of 2020, but not that surprising, considering trends used to come back every 20 years and in the early 00s Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor was such a defining cultural moment that it definitely inspired Dua's record and many others
@yangyangdni
@yangyangdni 7 ай бұрын
honestly that and the weeknd were the two artists that definitely started the whole thing (or at least inspired it in kpop) but i ended up forgetting about her while writing the video for some reason 😭 i completely forgot she did a collab with hwasa too that’s crazy

The Afrobeat/Amapiano trend is slightly taking over now due to popularity of Tyla and Ayra Starr (e.g. reset by ive, Spell by svt, Superwoman by Unis) and as someone who consumes that music on a daily basis, they're doing a horrible job compared to the other genres.

It's interesting how, with the exception of the tropical house trend, all of the 2010s trends lasted at least 3 years minimum, but so far all of the 2020s trends have only lasted 1 year or so. Based on how things are going right now I'd say the drum and bass trend will get overplayed and die out pretty quick, just like UK garage. Every single group in the industry jumped on the drum and bass bandwagon seemingly overnight, so I think people are starting to get really fed up with it. Personally I think by next year either hip hop soul, east coast club, or both, will have replaced drum and bass.

I'm glad there are still few kpop songs that uses electro type of music like that old sound of kpop. I'm also glad that Supernova existed that aespa brought back that sound which describes kpoppish for me.

I feel like a lot of uk garage and house are making its return in the industry. But drum and bass is a bit more common now compared to UK garage and house
@yangyangdni
@yangyangdni 7 ай бұрын
i was considering putting more house genres in but it was very hard to find a pinpoint as to where the super common ones peaked (such as future house) and i think it’s just on the account that the genre has been present in kpop for so long, that it’s influencing everything on a smaller scale! one of the reasons i found it a bit hard to add actual dates to“christian horsegirl music” was simply because it was a small scale trend that lasted for super long, and in my mind most other house genres fit into the same camp (but on a larger scale)

im also big fan of the era of songs like bts' dope, mx' hero, uniq's eoeo, madtown's omgt etc etc etc that coincided with gdfr coming out in 2015 😭😭 i suppose it can b considered (festival) trap but there was just such a heavy emphasis on a jazzy sample on top of an electro/hip hop beat that boy groups loved that year
@yangyangdni
@yangyangdni 7 ай бұрын
one thing i find interesting is that boy group trends tend to last longer than a lot of girl group trends (assumably because boy groups don’t need to change their sound to fit a trend as much as girl groups did back then/now) because you could definitely make a case for that era of music being a predecessor to the trap wave we saw in 2017.. also interesting to think about the fact that genre still pops up everyone once in a while (eg. everglow’s colourz )

something i find interesting is that in the past, kpop trends were about 2-3 years behind western artists for certain trends, but now, there seems to be at most a 6 month lag between a trendy (often on tiktok) genre in the west vs how long it takes for a big label kpop group to make a comeback with that sound. take the explosion of tyla vs lsfm's smarter for example.

ZB1 have explored so much of dnb from their title tracks, but I have also noticed them using various other rising genres in their bsides, like you mentioned "solar power" being trap and "new kids on the block" feels like uk garage music etc Also, I think that city pop kpop was a trend with Yukika releasing "neon", especially many artists trying it out followed by the amalgamation of retro and other genres with it

due to the bad rep 5th gen has of not singing, the 00's influence and the korean market having a tendency towards softer concepts and songs, i think rnb will be back as soon everyone gets tired of the sudo-indie sounds like uk garage and drum and bass lol especially since rnb cant be rnb without good vocals, bet agencies are training vocalists ASAP to fill the gap

I'd say European dance music highly influenced 1st gen (Lee Junghyun, NRG, KYT/Koyote, Sechskies, Papaya, T.TMA, So Chanhwee, Space A, TO-YA etc). Also, I feel like you gave too little credit to "Christian Horse Girl" music. That genre/sound started in 2nd gen with the likes of SNSD and shaped up early 3rd gen girlgroups. Acts like Apink, Gfriend, Oh My Girl and Lovelyz were HUGE and dominated the scene. It was much bigger than I think Hip Hop Soul can ever become in K-pop.
