Trent Palmer say's "I'm not a heel brake guy!"

I met up with ‪@TrentonPalmer‬ at the Legend Aircraft Factory ‪@americanlegendaircraftcomp6748‬ where he is building a new Rotax 916 powered Legend Cub. He and his wife did some hangar flying in one of the completed Legend Cubs. Trent took some time to tell me a little about his build. You can see more of his build on his chanel of course, but it was great catching up with him.

I have a 1952 PA-18-105 with factory installed toe brakes. Piper built about 350 of them for the USAF as primary trainers.

Yea I've seen some of those on Barnstormers. No flaps either, right? I have a 1958 Champion 7EC with C90, no toe brakes though.

Heel brakes take a bit of “getting used to em’” but it doesn’t take long for them to be “normal.”

Heel brakes are okay when you get used to them but if you have the option and prefer toe then do it. I'd probably choose heel myself because as an old Cub pilot I just got accustomed to the idea of trying not to use them outside of run-up and emergency. New brake systems are far more controllable but you still have to be careful because they can nose you over right quick.

I've taught lots of guys in cubs and other tail draggers. In my opinion heel brakes are better because it's a lot harder to accidentally put on the brakes when you don't want to. Toe brakes are too easy to accidentally activate when you're on the rudder, especially if you have big feet or are wearing boots. I've seen brakes toe brakes get pilots into more trouble than not. My mantra for students in tail draggers with toe brakes is on final "Heels on the floor". Don't touch the brakes until you've slowed down. Now, there are techniques to get on the brakes quickly after touchdown, but those are advanced techniques. Fly safe!

I have had the same Experimental Aircraft type with both type of brakes it is the brakes it self that makes them useful not where the levers are.

Exactly and with the improvement in brakes the heel brakes stop folk getting on them to hard and early leading to them flipping the aircraft over

I figured it out when I was a dumb 15 year old kid and I'm pretty sure anyone could figure it out but there has to be a reason why not one single small aircraft built today has heel brakes.
