I think Tromba has a slide limiting rod available for the Jazzbone. That's what the little hollow tube is for. The rod is held in place with the hole near the handgrip and the slide tube rides along it. The rod has a little nub on the end to keep you from losing the slide hitting "7th" position.

I have read that there is a safety device that should have been in your case. It is designed to help you while learning the half-spaced positions, and may explain the "mysterious" extra tube you didn't appreciate being in the grip area. A rod that maybe interacts with the tube is supposed to prevent you from going out beyond the half-seventh position and have your slide(s) come apart in the middle of playing.

The extra tube bit is either for holding your cigarette while playing or its a place to put a padlock to lock the instrument. It could also hold a rose if you happen to play an out of tune tango. Why is the word bone associated with brass instrument (including plastic ones) as they are obviously not made of bone or shaped like a bone either?

Comes from the french word for paperclip, though it could also just be an extension of the word Tromba, which was the name for trumpet in a buncha countries

@@colejackson6396 "Axe" was a common slang for a horn in america, so anything could possibly be used to refer to an instrument. Similar to how "keys" can be used to refer to any instrument using a keyboard layout, the exception being accordion or other keyed wind instruments.

early versions of the instrument were known as the sackbut (or sagbut, sagbutt, sackbutt etc) but it was also known as trombone in italy, kinda went from there

You should learn a piece called 'Miss Trombone'. It's more advanced, but hella fun to play. Teddy Trombone is another.

I personally have this instrument. The hole on the slide you mentioned is for a plastic rod that connects the outer slide to the inner slide so that you don't accidentally overextend the outer slide and have it fall off while playing.

They should rename it from Tromba to Trauma, because that is what the player and the listener will experience with the sound that this plastic novelty makes. The extra tube is for a blow dart. If the woodwind section goes out of tune, the tromba player fires a tranquilizer dart to put them to sleep until the concert ends.

While it's clear this is not a great instrument, It sounds like you're not warmed up or you've not played Blue Bells in a while. I'm not convinced that we are seeing this instrument's true potential. I'm really sorry; I hope you don't take this is negative criticism.

I don't think he'll take offence to it, it's honest feedback. But I didn't get that vibe from his playing, I think it just has to do with halved slide positions. If you play trombone, you can imagine how hard it is to play everything a few inches farther in than you're used to. If you play a valved instrument, imagine playing some notes regular, some notes a half step up and others a full step up. Challenging stuff. Edit: just rewatched it. Didn't realize the cracks the first time. Oh well, some people have bad playing days. Or maybe he didn't warm up. Who knows

That's a good point- I play the trombone, and it looked like he was having some difficulty adjusting to this in the beginning of the video. I also thought that the video was unnecessarily critical though- his others do it quite well, but it just seemed forced here. Plastic instruments aren't as bad as he makes them out to be, either (although by my experience they're still a long shot away from brass quality)

I don't see where he's overly harsh, actually. The fact that the high f isn't in tune - which was something I observed on mine too and prompted me to return it, luckily customer rights are pretty good in the EU - is pretty much a deal breaker. Unfortunately it's too low, so kind of hard to correct, other than using the alternative position. Otherwise I found the thing really fun to play, even despite some too sharp edges, that cumbersome slidestopper restricting finger space and the sound the slide makes.

I wish I'd seen this before I bought one. I was intrigued by plastic but didn't want to replicate anything I already had in brass. This instrument seemed like it expanded the scope of experimentation more, but due to its flaws (the flat F... he's not got a lemon, mine does the exact same as do others, and the pinching tube thing which serves no purpose) make this instrument unplayable. Which is a shame, because its sound is REALLY GOOD. It bottoms out very fast because there isn't enough density to vibrate well for lower notes (even Bb octave below middle C you start to notice it) but it really sings higher notes probably for the same reason that it sucks for low notes. The nice sound has been handy to overdub a few times in recording but I would never play this live.

I own one of these. The plastic feels nice in your hands, but be wary of the brittle spit valves. Also the inner slides with the black tips wiggle off the slide assembly for some reason and slip back on. Very novelty but a fun time. Don't stick one of your quality metal mouthpieces in these, after a bit of playing, they will become stuck inside the brittle thing and I've tried everything to get that bugger out

This concept (the short, double slide) was used on an instrument called a "quadro" back in the 1970s. Not many were made, but they too were considered jazz instruments. As for that flat high F, I bet there's a bit of plastic constricting the bore somewhere, and if you could knock it out without breaking anything in the process, that might be correctable.

That mysterious extra tube used to hold a stick approximately the length of the slide. It runs through a hole in the slide crossbar and - having a stopper at the end - prevents the outer slide from being inadvertently pulled off from the inner slides. Which is something that's happening quite frequently if you're used to regular trombone positions, specifically NOT used to such a short end position ;). That stick was kind of uncomfortable though, depending on how one holds the slide while playing, so maybe they shelved the concept.

I think the purpose of the little tube is just so you install the slides in the correct orientation. If the slides are rotated 180 degrees, your spit-valves will be on top, which is usually undesirable.

the length of tubing on the slide is the same as a regular tenor bone. it is half the length if you measured with a rule from the slide lock to the bottom where the end cap and water key is. thus bone was made to compliment trombone players in jazz because they typically have ti move great distances especially in solos. and I do think they could have made it a better quality

I have a friend with one of these trombones and where you have the two holes she has a plastic bar that seems to be blocking the slide from coming off while playing. I can check with her and see though.

The little tube is for a stopper, so that the slide doesn't get pulled off as it is half length.

I think I know why that little piece of tubing on the slide is there. it would have a plastic stick that would be connected at the beginning of the slide and that little tube is to hold it in place, but yours doesn't have the plastic stick

Trent, did you buy this Tromba new or is it borrowed? I would suggest that the "strange little tube" (mentioned at 4:35) may be for a rod to stop the slides from falling off - especially for a new player or learner. I'm not sure of this - it just seems like a good reason for it to be there.

I kind of like it. It is a bit of a novelty, which is why I like it. It would be a cute member of some sort of traveling jazz band, that would play outside of their cute Volkswagen bus at festivals. The sound itself sounds jazzy, in my opinion. Also that out-of-tune F could be a jazzy thing the band might do. Who knows. I thought the video was very interesting.

Hi Trent, I am a junior in high school and want to get a new horn I need something that can play jazz and symphonic (unless one is phenomenally better than the other) I need something that's good at both. The trumpets I am looking at are the Back 180s37, Schilke X3, and the Bach LT190 "commercial" trumpet. What is your opinion on the matter because I am utterly stuck between horns, Thank you.

Hi Trent, I've just been told about a German make of instruments called Trohmann. Their trumpets and cornets begin at £140 and I'm curious as to how good they are.

Thomann, I think it is. The band I conduct bought a cornet and flugelhorn from them under a previous conductor. We've had to replace the flugelhorn as the valves weren't very good. It's a German brand, but all their instruments are made in China. The cornet is nothing special, but I don't know how it would handle long term use.

Yeah Thomann is right. I had a go on one of their silver plated cornets that another band member has and it was really nice. He said that the original he got sent was one of the lacquered ones which he sent back because of a sticky valve. They sent him the silver plated one and he said that it's been brilliant since he got it. He's had it for 2 years. I was just so curious as the tone and the ease of hitting higher notes was amazing compared to my Besson 600. I found it hard to believe that it was only £200. Thanks for replying by the way, really appreciate it!

If both water keys were pressed at the same time, the key closest to the mouthpiece would be emptied with more force than the second. If only one key is depressed at a time, the force is more efficient to empty the water.

Parker Cote Band directors teach that to their kids due to the simplicity of it (like he said, it's a landmark), but once you start teaching more mature students, you can teach them more accurate positions according to the intonation of the horn.

My only explanation is perhaps smaller children who may not be able to reach that 7th position in a real trombone, or even the 5th. This would eliminate that severally.

Jake Maloy Well from my understanding it makes the positions easier to reach, especially for faster licks. Typically you'd see jazz trombonist play on a peashooter but this would allow you to still have the range of the peashooter but have to reach less than with an actual peashooter. If that makes any sense.

Hey Trent, i'm a euphonium player and in high school. I recently bought a 1920's King Brand era brass instrument, and it's not a baritone. Did they make Alto Horns in King Brand? There is no mouth piece with it but I tried an alto horn mouthpiece and it fit perfectly. Do you know anything about it? Thanks -Scotty

Hey Trent. How are you? I think that this instrument is made for a child. That should be why in the slide section there is an extrange tube because his/her hands are small so maybe (just maybe) it is an aid to hold this trombone properly. If you found out if it is for another reason, please let me know. In my my case it is just a guess :)
