You and your buddy's are truly an inspiration of mine that give me that extra motivation to get my pilots license before I get out of the Navy. Also, go battle born! Every pilot has heard the saying, but if there's anyone here who hasn't, I'll repeat it: "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots." Old pilots have proven they can stay alive in an inherently dangerous activity, and those are good friends to have around.

Two weeks ago, didn’t know who Trent Palmer was. Flat on my back now with a broken leg, nothing to do but surf flying on KZbin, I see a whole aspect of gen aviation I had not known before. Keep emphasizing safety, but what fun it must be to water ski! A whole new aspect 30+ years with my Cherokee 6 I couldn’t imagine. Western flying lifestyle - similar to IKON A-5 promotes for water - I figured flyover country was left out but here it is! Keep it safe. I’ve started looking at Kitfoxes more closely. Not to replace the ‘6, but to add the tail dragger fun to flying. Retirement is coming up for me sooner than later too.

I've been watching for a while and love the attitude that comes across in your videos. I've been meaning to comment for a while that I've been struggling with the contrast in volume between the music and the dialog, but it looks like you've fixed it in this video. Thank you very much :-) Just in case it's an accident, in the previous videos I've had to quickly turn down the volume when the music starts to not blast my ears, and quickly turn it back up when the talking starts to try not to miss anything. Love the series, keep it up! :-)

So interesting point. In South Africa we can obtain what is called a Part 69 ATF (Authority To Fly) which allows commercial gain use of a non type certified aircraft. So for my Kitfox I applied for an owner training ATF under Part 69 and then I basically "lease" the aircraft to the flying school so that I can learn to fly in my own aircraft! I do not however allow them to use it to train anyone else! The only condition then is that is has to be serviced and maintained by a registered maintenance organisation (so cost of ownership increases) but to smash out 40 hours worth of flight instruction its worth it!

Great stuff -- stoked for Nick! Trent, for new guys it might help to explain what "Experimental" means in the context of a Kitfox. To newbies, the FAA's Experimental category sounds scary -- like sketchy, risky, one-off nutty professor inventions as in "maybe it'll fly, maybe not...." Some of us may be nutty, but we know that there ain't much experimentation going on with a Kitfox. More than 4,500+ of these things have racked up millions of flying hours since 1984 with a phenomenal safety record in dozens of countries. Most mechanically inclined folks who can follow instructions can build one in their two-car garage. (No welding required.) Nick was smart to have his work checked at each stage of the build -- I will. Alternatively, you can have the Kitfox factory build one for you, but in the end it's the same airplane. (SLSA...I know, details.) Just talked with John at Kitfox yesterday -- cool guy! Very helpful! Narrowing down options now.

Congrats Nick - well done, really stoked for you! Might be quite interesting to compare the VGs / wings of both Kitfoxes by fitting tassels to the top surface and filming the stall onset - perhaps viewed with top mounted cameras - or possibly even better, from a chase drone. Bit of a big project and worth asking some experts (EAA?) how best to set up the tassels, but could be fun and educational.

Vortex generators do not keep laminar flow over the wing. They destroy laminar flow and create vortices, now the flow is turbulent but it is energized a lot more. Therefore preventing flow separation and therefor delaying the stall so higher angles of attack and thus a lower stall speed as result. It depends on the airfoil where the stall will start. If the airfoil is thick, which is pretty common on STOL planes you should have trailing edge stall (the gentle type of stall) having a thin airfoil leads to leading edge separation (very abrupt loss of lift).

Vortex generators create turbulent flow across the top of the airfoil which energizes the flow and delays separation. VGs have nothing to do with “laminar” flow. That’s the extent of my knowledge
