I flew many airline flights back in the 1980s with a great pilot who had his own Citabria or Decathlon, I forget which. He decided to water ski on a glassy smooth lake. He kept lots of speed and pushed forward on the stick, but he was too prudent to push all the way forward. It worked just fine. He was hangar flying with some friends afterwards, and another pilot thought that sounded like fun. That pilot took his nice Piper Cub and went out on the same lake, but a boat had gone by and left a slight wake which disturbed the surface tension. He got out ok, but then had to explain to his insurance company why his Cub is now at the bottom of a lake. That's when I decided that it wasn't for me.

Engine-Outs are nearly a daily occurrence for piston engines. The statistics say around 1 in flight failure, in every 3,200 hours. Keep in mind, most engines have an estimated time between overhauls of 12 years or 2,000hrs. Many people get 2500-3000hrs with proper use out of certain engines: TCM O-200, O-360, Lycoming O-235s and O-320s. They generally fail slowly. But can and will throw rods thru the block. Magnetos fail often. But there are no alternatives for certified airplanes, because FAA mandated 100-year old junk on us. And even the few certified options for ignition or FADEC cost more than a used Cessna. So, we can determine piston engines fail in flight about 50/50 between overhauls. And we also know that the FAA will continue to force this inevitable outcome on private pilots for the foreseeable future, because they take approximately 30 years to change their ways, on average. (the time it takes for the regulators to retire or die of old age). I know or have met over 20 people with off-airport landings due to engine failure, none were regarding fuel or even carb ice. Most people don't practice engine outs. And many schools and instructors, though they teach emergency landings and keep you looking for open fields, these same people fly around the airport traffic pattern way out 2 or even 3 miles downwind and fly these super long approaches that wont allow them to make the runway due to engine failure or even carb ice (which 97% of the time happens on final approach when throttle is closed to idle). Its like, stay on top of the airport. Schools have the most engine outs and half the time they end in fields or roads within a mile of airports, but they never learn.

Separate note: people should be able to take whatever risks they want, as long as it doesn’t endanger others. I disagree in one tiny part, it shouldn’t be risk, risk doesn’t have a victim, shouldn’t be a crime or punishable offense without a clear and decisive victim. The term risk is vague, leaves way too much for interpretation. What one might consider risk might not be a risk for another. Government should be policing anything that doesn’t have a victim and feelings butt hurt does not make you a victim.

I’m really glad to see the conversation shift slightly to give some perspective on PERSONAL risk management. Waterskiing, low n slow flying, competition flying… all of them have similar risk profiles to so many other aviation activities. Quinn said flying single engine over a city at night - it’s a common practice, Crop Dusters fly at max gross weight, low to the ground and even under power lines on a DAILY basis, and all of this is accepted by the general population and the FAA. “Don’t judge other people” good advice, Trent. One pilot’s risk/reward scenario isn’t the same as another’s and as long as you are considering the safety of people on the ground and/or your passengers then - live and let live yo!

@warrendemars 2 жыл бұрын
Most likely it's caused by Trent stepping on the right rudder pedal a little harder to control the airplane due to P torque. As he pushes on the petal, it will add a touch of brake that stops the tire. As they spin, there is some vibration and right after takeoff you feel every vibration to make sure the engine is running and the airplane is flying correctly. Stopping the tires will immediately stop the vibration. If the vibration doesn't stop, as you expect it too, then you know something else is wrong.

A better formula for waterskiing forces would be to equate the tires to a boat hull's planing speed, because hydroplaning tires on the ground are using different physics. They're compressing a thin layer of water against a solid surface, whereas waterskiing aircraft and boats are planing on water with nothing beneath it...the two couldn't be further from each other. It's sort of like comparing an ekranoplan to a jet when determining stall speeds, two completely different things. Maybe something like Crouch's planing speed formula? I'm not much of a boat guy so I can't really say if that's the right calculation to use. Maybe there's a more accurate formula if one were to look at the math involved with the explanation of skipping stones. Tire surface area is small relative to weight even with tundra tires, but they're only supporting the weight you're intentionally pushing down into the water...so really they're probably not countering all that much force.

I noticed in your listing of "RISKs" you failed to mention the risk of receiving a violation of FAR 91.13 by an overly enthusiastic FAA Inspector . Just because you received a warning letter doesn't mean that the next guy won't receive a notice of suspension. The good news is all they will need to do is convince an NTSB Law Judge how the following was not a careless or reckless operation: - Operating an aircraft from/on a surface it's not approved for. - How they are able to operate an aircraft on the surface of the water (probably) without a single engine sea rating. - If in fact that aircraft had flipped in the water, how the introduction of probably 15-20 gals. of fuel would not endanger the quality of that body of water. While I'm sure it's fun to waterski an airplane, the more videos that get posted of it happening will draw the attention of various "enforcement personnel" thus turning someone's fun into a protracted legal hassle.

In my youth, shortly after I learned to barefoot ski we tried to see how slow we could go before we went kerplunk. I was able to barefoot down to just about 36 MPH. Most barefooting is done at around 38 to 40 MPH. The arch and heel of one's foot (and could even do it on just one foot) is a very tiny surface to skim on the surface of the water at that speed. There is no way that an airplane with large balloon tires is going to sink through the surface of the water at 35 MPH or slightly slower. I'll bet they would continue to ski even down to 30 MPH.

I dunno how much it would help in the average tricycle gear GA aircraft, the tires are too small to be effective for very long, and you're going to stall a lot sooner than a bush plane would. The two options here are a) water ski on the mains until your wheels sink in the water below stall speed and nose you over, b) hold it inches over the water and bellyflop into the water below stall speed. You end up going in the water at roughly the same speed, but would having some vertical speed during that time help to prevent nosing over? Plowing the gear deeper into the water might get the fuselage flat against the water, preventing a nose over by slowing you down faster. It's not really something one could quantify, but I have seen several water landings with fixed tricycle gear that didn't end up nosing over. There's a really popular video of a Cessna 206 in Hawaii landing in the ocean, it's a good example of that. If you have retracts, the best choice is to keep them up and hopefully skip over the water to a stop.
@bobbyhaynes5116
@bobbyhaynes5116 2 жыл бұрын
@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper I was mainly referring to a bush plane. Honestly without retracts on a tricycle landing gear I think I would try landing in a nose up, and try to flare the plane just at stall speed, trying to stink the rear gear and settling the nose in... I am sure it would be a rough landing no matter what what you did. And I would expect regardless lto be upside down.... now with that being said, know that I am not a pilot, and my only flight experiences are with RC planes. I am merely making my observation and thoughts based on my limited knowledge of flight.... I do not advise anyone taking my advice... more skilled pilots I am sure have better ideas.

What the hydroplane equation gives you is a speed at which it takes extra force to push through the boundary layer, the depth of the water has very little to do with it (go watch people who hydroplane ATVs across lakes, which btw is probably more dangerous than doing it in a kitfox). So if you are in a hydroplane mode yes you are flying but it takes more than the weight of the airplane to break the boundary layer. So yes you can ski below hydroplane speed but it is far easier to dip in.

He landed successfully, unscathed, in a shallow swamp covered in mud. He sat on the wingtip, above water, until the rescue boat showed up. He flew his afternoon training sortie. "Back on the horse."

One thing to consider is the water temperature. Many years ago whilst doing my advanced (BSAC) scuba test, on of the requirements is to remove your mask at 20m depth. I opted to have it ripped off when I leased expected it (as would happen IRL). The water temperature was 4°C, the shock was the temperature change from a nice warm mask to ambient water, I couldn’t catch my breath even though I had a regulator in my mouth, it probably to 10-15 seconds to compose myself. I was wearing a toasty dry suit at the time. Ihink Lake Tahoe in March would be challenging.

My Dad flew an L-5 in Burma in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He told me he would "waterski" (though he didn't call it that) on the Irrawaddy River. He was probably glad I didn't try it with our 182.

I'd be curious as to Trents Liability Exposure from his insurance companies perspective. Does "waterskiing" fall under aerobatics? Does he have coverage for that activity. What about off-field landings. These landings go way beyond an improved and maintained grass runway? Does insurance cover all that? I know insurance is pretty tight on whats covered and not. I know recently when I bought my first RG aircraft that isurance want to almost want me to supply a blood sample to get the insurance and they were very strict on where to land/not land (paved runway vs unpaved runways). I am not pointying fingers. Just curious. I believe we should have the freedom to fly but I also no the realities of insurance liability, cost, coverage and risk assessment.

To carry on to what Trent said about knowing how to get out of your airplane safely once your upside down… lifejackets are a great idea to keep for each passenger. It’s not that easy to swim with a sweatshirt in jeans in 40° water right after you are coming off an adrenaline high.

Why are there no bush-tires with tread? More often than not you are skidding and sliding when landing off-piste, I understand agressive, mx-style knobbies might become a problem in cross-wind landings but its a long way between those and slicks. They are bush tires after all, thats where they should excel and improve landing performance.

Tread tends to pick up rocks and throw them at the wing/fuselage/tail, causing damage.

Another factor: Downstream vs. upstream when skiing in a river. You lose ground speed downstream equivalent to the flow rate of the water.

Hello Trent, I'm living in eastern Washington and I have no idea if your brother would be interested in his own Duster airstrip , but there's one available for sale in Tekoa washington, 2 years on the market. Looks like a great deal to be had for a duster pilot.. Just a thought to ponder. Fly on and be happy dude.

An inconvenience to others although they aren't even remotely affected.

While he was jabber jawing into a mike whether one should water ski or not, Choppergirl just did it while flying under a bridge and is coming back around to actually do something worth seeing. Most of these guys couldn't handle an outside loop under a bridge water skiing the top tail of the rudder.... if she can spear a fish with the pito tube, it's a win.. if not.. it's a go around for a second try.
