I screwed up with my super cub landing in a open range area in British Columbia once . I did not see a length of barbed wire attached to a ancient fence post laying in the scrub and it hooked my right had landing gear as I was rolling to a stop and caused me to ground loop at a low speed . Damage was minor but it sure took the starch out of my underwear . It made me less cocky and caused me to do numerous low and overs of potential landing sites . Not sure I would have ever seen the wire from the air in the incident I mentioned but the experience was sobering and I learned a valuable lesson from it.

There used to be a paved runway just west of Bishop called Coyote Flats. It was 3,000' long and at an elevation of 9989'. It made Leadville look like a piece of cake. It was the highest paved runway in the US. I landed my Cardinal there many times (it has a turbo). As with all great things the USFS ripped it up. I think it could still be landable with a plane with big tires. There are a couple of lakes a short hike away, but we never caught any fish.

I loved "dropping in over the fence"! We used Citabrias as tow ships for sailplanes at Sailplane Enterprises, Hemet/Ryan field in Southern Cal'. There was a barbed wire fence across the final approach. The tactic was to come in high to keep the tow cable off the fence, cross control and slip in the last few feet to land short. Landing short meant the line boy could just grab the tow line and hook up the next tow, putting another sailplane in the air as rapidly as possible.

Trent, you fish small midges in tailwaters, just below a major dam, say like right below Bridgeport reservoir in CA on the East Walker river. Further down, in NV, you need to put on some waders, flip some rocks in the riffles, and see what size, color and profile the nymphs are in the stretch of water you're fishing, and match with flies our of your box, or learn to tie flies to match. Also water temperature is important, too.... trout tend to get off the feed if the water temperature is much below 43 F.... so... water like that, you want to fish mid day to 3 or 4 pm this time of January. Need air temps higher than water temps to warm up the water and increase the fishy's metabolism and want to eat some calories. 45 F or so makes a big difference for those brownies to go on the feed.

How many "inspection passes" do you average before landing in a new area? Also, and I'll understand if you dont answer this one; whats the pucker factor on a new site like that?
@TrentonPalmer2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the landing site, when it’s clear and open with zero signs of obstructions then it may only be one pass like this, but more technical and obstructed sites might require a bunch of inspection passes. I’ve probably done 10 passes at spots and never felt comfortable so I moved on. As far as the pucker factor on this one it wasn’t that bad landing wise. But in the back of my mind was the fact that I was alone, on a 11k ft mountain with forecasted 100+mph gusts in the next day meaning if I did screw up there was a good chance no one was getting to me and an even better chance I wasn’t getting my plane out of there. I have been up to that area on Mt Patterson a few times on the 4x4 road. The sign says no off road cross country travel because there are sensitive alpine plants that live up there. I know landing a plane in certain areas has arguably been a grey area with the USFS in the past and as a pilot and human being, I understand that mistakes can be made. Especially when things happen spontaneously. I've been following your channel for awhile and been a fan of your videos. They show a side of aviation that not many people get to see. I know you didn't go there with the planned intention of landing, I just hope other people don't watch this and think they should try going up there and doing the same.

Thanks for another great video. You are a true example of enjoying your passion, but always staying within your (and your plane's) capabilities.

Finally got around to watching this one. Great video! Sure enjoyed it. I don’t think I’ve ever landed that high! Last time I tried it didn’t work out.

Funny how the focus goes bananas just when vitamins for clarity are mentioned :D

Flying high is such a rush, I got my motorglider up to 17,999ft and took lots of pictures over the rocky mountains, some video too, may be some day I'll have to post some of it. Well done Trent, love how you approach your missions.

Love the subtle "If I have an engine out I can just turn that way" - beautifully done :-)
