Tres Leches Cake (Three Milk Cake) is a single layer sponge cake that is wonderfully rich with a soft and moist, yet dense and spongy texture. It is almost like a pudding cake. What is so unique about this cake is that once the sponge cake is baked and cooled, it is soaked with a generous amount of a sweet milk sauce made with whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, and evaporated milk. While it doesn't really need a frosting, a layer of fluffy whipped cream goes so perfectly with the soft and moist cake. I also like to garnish each slice of cake with a maraschino cherry, but you could use fresh fruit.

This turned out beautifully. Everyone loved it! I made a half recipe in a 9 or 10 inch round tin and increased the amount of chantilly cream topping by 50%. Delicious topped with strawberries.

I have my mom's recipe, but this is almost identical! The only difference is that my mom put a layer of meringue on top. In tropical countries, whipped cream is not as common nor is very practical because of hot and humid climates. Bravo Stephanie!

I was very curious to see a tres leches recipe! It reminded me of a popular 80’s cake recipe here in Brazil: it’s also a sponge cake but we use condensed milk, milk and coconut milk to soak the cake, garnish it with grated coconut. We used to get a cold piece of cake wrapped in tin foil on birthday parties! It was the best! Thanks for the recipe!!

Looks great! Will try it out next time I make this cake since I've had mixed results with other recipes. Some stores will use meringue instead of cream on top as I've noticed in other comments, but my favorites are the stores that will also put dulce de leche on top (usually in a pattern along with the other frosting, so either a lattice or some lines on top of the cream, and use a fancy piping tip along the edges for presentation too). it doesn't do a lot for the flavor since it's just for aesthetics, but I think it's a nice touch
