I love how Sydney jumps up and down and points, like a cheerleader, about food. So funny and cute. What was it she said when you handed her the parfait to be taken to her table to eat? Love her denim overalls. Denim is such a perfect fabric for spring and fall weather in this part of the world. Though, denim is one of the most damaging fabrics to our environment in the making of it. It uses more water than any other, so people need to consider not owning dozens of pairs of dungarees. When it gets really hot and the sun is really strong, teach her to water in the evening, so when the roots reach up for the water they are not scorched by the heat. It can be a pre-bedtime, winding-down activity together as her day winds down with less hyper activities. Ps are particularly good to master because they are so similar when lettered to Bs, Ds, Qs, and even Gs. She did those well. Even 9s and 6s are not that different from Ps when learning to letter. Your deck and yard with the gorgeous stand of trees is worth all the minor difficulties because they afford such beauty and some privacy. Being an only child with a single mother and family at some distance, it is good for Sydney to learn a sense of being a neighbor and living in a community with its own rituals, activities, PO, shops and such. It gives her a sense of place and helps to socialize her with people and the events we create to share. It's a variation on chicken Florentine. People often tend to forget that there is a classic version of certain things, like bouillabaisse always includes Pernod. It is a fish broth based seafood stew with some tomatoes and Pernod among other things. But people everywhere adapt these things to their gardens, their pantries, their tastes. Someone once went on and on about a Yorkshire pudding done the wrong way. We all laughed. Each home cook has their own way of doing it even in Yorkshire. Or they may make something that they will say is similar to Yorkshire pudding, since so many cultures have something similar to it and have fish stews, etc. So, yours was not classic, but it was an adaptation that could have occurred in a Florentine home kitchen depending upon what the cook that evening had in the home pantry. We must remember, too, being Americans that there are those who cannot live without the canned, jellied cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving and classic cranberry relishes be damned. LOL. I have been to exquisitely prepared, yet traditional, Thanksgiving dinners wherein the wiggly stuff is brought to table on a lovely dish claiming its pride of place. And I've been to those holiday dinners where people have even served both, since that's fairly simple to do. I have even done two dressings for the turkey: one for those who want something simple and traditional and something like chestnut and oyster stuffing for those who like more flavor adventure. Dressings are easy to do and the traditional one is not too expensive, so why not make the holiday meal a treat for all who want what they've always loved, within reason. So you can just say you are doing a "take" on whatever the classic recipe is that is well-known.
