Britney Spears 3 is a good example using the first 2 notes of this clave. Reggae Dubstep uses this exclusively. It makes up half the Son, Rumba, Samba, Basa clave etc, and is usually called the Haitian Clave

I am also a Trinidadian with many years of performing calypso and soca. While you are correct in the naming and placing of the tresillo in world and pop music, you have unfortunately misnamed this rhythm that you are calling soca. It's not your fault, since the practitioners before us were not saavy enough to differentiate soca from the various other rhythms that are influenced by the tresillo. It's the tresillo yes, but not soca.

Bro, as a latino i can tell you: your song is actually known as tropipop or modern reggaeton. You can listen to sebastian yatra or carlos vives, both latin musicians basically specialized in tropipop. Or to some daddy yankee, same story

David: Trinidadians were using the SoCa rhythm (clave) over the 4/4 decades before Latin music picked it as tropipop. It DID cross from Trinidad to Venezuela in the 70s, and thence to the rest of Latin pop music. But it started in Trinidad with SoCa.

@@otsoko66 that is also true, even though it was being used way back by the latinos in new york doing latin jazz, which later became salsa

David Merino I am a Caribbean Music Producer who worked with Soca Legends. Modern Reggaeton came from one song from a Jamaican artist by the name of Cutty Ranks who did dance Hall which is a sub genre of reggae heavily mixed with SOCA to create the DANCE LOL. So the Man did he’s research well. I don’t know how he found it out but I’m impressed. Well done.

Very densely informative , not superficial, but may I suggest that the notation stay on the screen longer ans you put out the details quite fast verbally ? But yes, please do more on breaking down and building up rhythms -- as KZbin hardly lacks harmony oriented videos, but is woefully short on rhythms…

I Think you have Dancehall music and Soca music mixed up. The rhythm guitar is Soca and the pluck sounds that you hear in all the songs come from modern Dancehall witch artists in the states got influenced from and called it Tropical house. Now Tropical house is almost like if Dancehall and Soca had a baby! You got four on the floor beat like Soca and the Dancehall pluck sound and there you have it!

I appreciate this video, but for the record: The clave does not come from soca music (as this video seems to imply). The clave rhythm is much older than soca music. It's used in soca of course, just as it's used in hundreds of different styles. Soca is a relatively recent genre (1970s-ish), so it's odd that he's thinking of this as some non-commercial rhythmic root that's somehow at the root of more contemporary popular styles ("bastardized" styles, in his words). I think calling this the "tresillo" pattern (or the 3 of the clave) is a much less confusing way to describe this pattern.

You cant reduce music like that, soca feels and sounds different than reggaeton, reggaeton comes from dancehall and it share carribean roots w soca
