It doesn't matter whether there was a talking snake or a great flood. If you are studying the bible, you should ask yourself what is this story actually trying to explain or teach me?

What most people doesn't know is that faith is not just about magical beliefs. It's a daily practice that grounds our lives and provides meaning in this increasingly chaotic world. There's a certain level of sacredness in our everyday moments if we're willing to believe.

What most believers don't know is religions are a scam and a form of brainwashing and mind control and indoctrination, They don't gain you anything, they cost you your own freedom and critical thinking skills and your ability to vote wisely. Growing up, my grandfather was a math and history genius he, had 130 different religious text books, from all over the world so I learned about all religions as stories. When my kids were younger we would have dinners with families of different faiths. To match the food with the stories of their beliefs. I raised my kids with Love, Logic and Education.

There isn't a better argument for non-theism than education about the plurality of beliefs around the world. A sensible person finds it a lot harder to accept that they've somehow stumbled across the one true truth after they place themselves in the wider context of the billions of others, of vastly differing beliefs, who feel the exact same way.

Carmichael is right: It doesn't matter whether or not the Bible is literally true. It's not a history book or a science book, it's a spiritual book. The language of the spirit is poetry - and poets should never be mistaken for historians or scientists.
@Ketraar

But then I ask you this, why is it used in many countries as the base for morality, or even law? If its just poetry, why do Presidents swear on it? I think there is a naïve take on trying to reconcile one's mother cultural attachment to religion and the fact that most if it is at best nonsense.
@thenostalgiabusiness

Yeah, this is a nice sentiment in concept, but the Bible and other religious texts largely aren't treated as mere poetry by their adherents. Historically, we don't seem to transition to the "poetry phase" of viewing religious texts until the religions those texts come from have been dead for a few centuries.

@@thenostalgiabusiness You're right that it takes a long time but the fact we're even having this discussion means the process is already underway. Christianity isn't over as an institution but 1) the large number of adherents that embrace only the shallowest form of fundamentalism and have no concept of its depths is a sure sign that it's faltering, and 2) the majority of Americans aren't members of any Christian denomination anymore. Edit: The college I attended was a Lutheran school so theology was in the curriculum no matter what your major was. There were elderly fundamentalist profs and then there were much more progressive ones (including the department head) who treated scripture honestly and knew none of the texts were even written in the same century as the characters they portrayed. They DID review Biblical text as poetry and literary prose. In a course taught by the department head, he said the Book of Jonah was one of the great comic novels.

I'm going to add onto this. It is very important to stop trying to change the Bible to fit our narrative. Or really any religion. Take it for what it actually says. It is what it is. Because if you see it for what it is and what it says then you know exactly what you are following. The idea that we have so many different denominations is ridiculous. So many people are trying to add and take away. Just listen to what it says and then ask yourself do you agree to follow it or not.

The "important part" of Christianity (what he refers to as "the philosophy") is not exclusive to that religion, though. Or really, any religion. Those ideas and principles exist outside of any religious context, and have for thousands of years. Obviously people should do whatever works for them, but I find it strange that they go through these mental gymnastics of "well I believe in what my religion *represents,* I just don't believe in the things that make it a religion."

Faith is an instinct. Whether your faith is Christianity, atheism, Hinduism, Taoism, any other official belief system or a purely personal faith (which mine is) it's the manifestation of an instinct, and instincts can't be amputated. Faith is essential to the human condition whether you indulge in magical thinking or ground your life in rationality. If you're living rationally your faith is there to strengthen your rational core; if you reject rationality the cause lies with you, not with faith.

The Bible's timeline matches the history of agricultural societies. Agriculture started in the fertile crescent about 12,000 years ago. When Adam and Eve were kicked out, they were told to till the ground. Churches that are hung up on any particular aspect of the Bible never seem to be hung up on wanting to serve people. Jesus himself said the sheep and goats will be separated based on how we treat the least of these. Whomever is most marginalized in society, how we personally treat them, is how we will be judged as goat or a sheep. I'd like to see more churches encourage members to set aside a portion of their paychecks into a special account so when they run into a need they can afford, they can just serve the need and not have to think too hard about it.

I learned from the Bible that we have to have a relationship with the Lord and that is most important. As it speaks of people walking with the Lord and they were sinners. In the book it speaks of people doing things because the Lord told us too but their heart is not in it. We need to know that we need the Lord as the sinners that know will go first and the better than thou will go behind them. I know I need the Lord for I live in sin and pray often building that relationship. He is real.

I think "Religion" was created to maintain the social fabric of our society. I think of it like a story about what our ancestors experienced in their life and what's right, what's wrong according to their experience. The religion/story got modified with time and with experience of our society. By holding the social fabric means teaching a normal human being about morals like what's right or wrong. Just think of a society without religion just 100 years ago. It would have been wild and chaotic and we never would have progressed so far into science. Now we have laws and science so we can modify our understanding of religion which includes both and teach our children about it.

@@charmcharm2352 I have 2 exception to the jogging/running taboo. First, when a person is desperately hungry and sees a small animal, then the person is allowed to run after the animal, with the purpose of making an adequate meal of it. Second and last exception: when a person sees a big animal and the animal is hungry, then the person is allowed to run from the animal, for the purpose of not becoming an adequate meal for it. That's it. No other form of running allowed.

This is an age-old philosophy and what brings so much confusion.

Boiling it down to just philosophy is his coping mechanism to justify what he can't reconcile in his own life. We all live in sin. And we aren't supposed to weigh our sins against another's. We all have our own individual sinful nature to struggle with in our time here. We are taught to try to repent of it (ask for forgiveness and strive to do better the next time). That doesn't mean we will always succeed but we are supposed to try. I feel bad for the guy and his struggles, but from a Christian standpoint his philosophy is misleading to others.
