While The Niners did lose, this week should have increased Purdy’s stock dramatically. Not only was he without CMC, Kittle, Deebo, and even Aiyuk anywhere near his best, but his only good offensive lineman in Trent has to step out of the game as well. The result? Purdy still played great as though all those guys were still there. On top of it, the team that he supposedly stunk against last week completely stuffed CJ, showing that maybe last week was more a function of a good defense than a dysfunctional offense. Ending Purdy’s first year and starting last year, the argument against Purdy was “he just dunks and dunks”. Then we learned that he throws the ball for more air yards than anyone else in the league. Then the argument had to change to “he can’t win from behind”. Then he won from behind two weeks in a row to send his team to the Super Bowl, and now the argument has shifted to “can’t play without the avengers”, which he just showed this last week is not true at all. At this point there is no reason to discredit Purdy aside from the classic “I don’t like him” argument, which unfortunately he will never be able to overcome on the field.
