Trevor Noah hosts the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning “The Daily Show,” which received two 2019 Emmy® nominations, including Outstanding Variety Talk Series and Outstanding Interactive Program. Noah’s latest stand-up special “Son of Patricia” was released in 2018. His other stand-up specials include “Afraid of the Dark” (2017), “Lost in Translation” (2016) and “African American” (2013). This year, Noah is crossing North America on his “Loud & Clear” arena tour and will release the paperback version of his 2016 New York Times best seller “Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood” as well as an adaptation for young readers. Noah has several projects in development via his Day Zero Productions, including a feature film adaptation of “Born a Crime” and a half-hour comedy at Comedy Central.
NDI’s Leadership in Democracy Award recognizes individuals and organizations from around the world that have carried out NDI’s mission of “working for democracy and making democracy work” through innovative or non-traditional means, typically outside of the fields of politics or international affairs, often through the establishment of public-private partnerships. The award honors “outside-of-the-box” leadership that reinforces a culture of democracy; recognizes and promotes fundamental human rights; helps ensure that democracy delivers for all citizens; and creates or sustains democratic institutions. NDI is grateful to individuals whose distinguished commitment to democracy has a transformational impact. Their passion, involvement, and impact is an inspiration to and catalyst for others to emulate their examples and get involved.
NDI’s 2019 Democracy Gala celebrates humor as the most democratic form of speech, and explores how humor critiques social and political imperfections in democracy, informing and leading to social change. We know that satire is a valued and trusted vehicle for freedom of expression. There’s growing evidence, however, that comedy and satire are also powerful tools for promoting a broader range of democratic values. Comedy and satire allow us to communicate pro-democracy messages. They build bridges to new audiences, such as the 18 to 35 year-old youth demographic.

@@africanchild5719 but they were awarded those honorary doctorates by universities , due to the work they have done in their respective fields , so they didn't just add the Dr before their names . so Trevor has to wait for one of our universities or like Lucas Radebe an international university to honor him , then he will be Dr. Trevor Noah.

If this speech is unscripted, as I think it truly is, Trevor is nothing short of a remarkable oratory genius ...
@marcus_w0
@marcus_w0 4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to disapoint you, but this speech wasn't "really" unscripted. It was a combination of different points he's given on different occasions like interviews to his book and such. Nevertheless it's powerful and true. You don't have to have genuine thoughts everytime, as long as the message fits the need. And it does.
@conancat
@conancat 4 жыл бұрын
@@marcus_w0 if he didn't write the speech down, memorized it and recited it, by definition the speech is, in fact, unscripted. He may have prepared notes or gave it much thought or write down bullet points on what he was gonna say as you said he may have said those things during other occasions, and that's coming prepared. Being prepared doesn't mean you have to be scripted. Scripted, no. Prepared, yes. Comedians are professional speakers. It just happens that when at most times they are on stage they tell jokes instead of speaking of other things.
@marcus_w0
@marcus_w0 4 жыл бұрын
@@conancat Yeah, I get your point. But I refered to unscripted as to unprepared and off the cuff and new. And that it wasn't. It was a medley of things he's already been saying on other occasions. But, like I said, this doesn't make it a bad speech. It was a strong and powerful one and I enjoyed to listen.

It comes naturally to him because it part of his daily job as speaker, even though he is brilliant and spontaneously keeps getting better at his job. Also we have heard him mentioned these stories before.
@Jen-nh7yw
@Jen-nh7yw 4 жыл бұрын
@@marcus_w0 It probably would have help if you had not misused the word "unscripted". That threw me off as it did Grey Ang. Saying something 'new' is not a part of being unscripted. Unscripted means you spoke whatever was on your mind even when it something you've sad before. I do agree that it was a great speech, though.

I grew up in New Zealand at a time when apartheid in South Africa divided our nation. NZ went into battle over a Springbok tour, because half of us didn’t want a racist state’s rugby side playing here. My sister and I had “Free Nelson Mandela” written on our school bags. I was taught and told a lot about South Africa over that period. Trevor put a face on that conflict for a lot of Kiwis. He’s not just a comedian. He’s a teacher and an eye-opener.

@@bismarkadu8799 Yes. That is true. May he have the wisdom to recognize the back biting coming from the haters is just an illusion; a paper tiger, there only to make him stronger. Just as they a have been us since childhood, and will always be, till ,of course, our level of maturity allows for it to fall away like water on a duck's back.He has a golden heart. He has a vision not of this world even though he is in it. Do you love him? Because it's that love he feels hidden deep inside US that keep him going. 🤔 Plus hes funny as hell in an intelligent in a dignified way.

@@lizard9 So can we all. Give him time. The man has a beautiful star within that's just getting started. I'd vote him for president lol However that may not be his calling. Making us laugh in such an interesting and intelligent way is a great gift. He has a special way of bonding with our higher faculties.

Trevor Noah really is an amazing person, he is bright and so articulate... The way he thinks, the way we almost see him look for the words that will in the best way possible pass to us... He truly is a treasure of Africa yet we all over the world are able to get the very best of this amazing man. I truly admire the person he has been and I do believe he will go places... I really do. 👏❤️🇵🇹
