Hi, just found your channel. This is by far the best Trey teaching I've found on the web. Can't thank you enough, and can't wait to dig into Ya Mar!

haha! thx brotha! i love that sigh at the end there. . lots to go over, i kno. it makes allot more sense to me now. i always thought there was allot more sweeping action going on with treys playing but it's more staccato arpeggios then sweeping.. love these lessons! thx so much for taking the time for my request. gonna start working on those and incorporating appegios on the 4 other strings. u got me playing guitar after a 4mo dry spell :D

At the beginning of this video, you mentioned Trey's "poppy, flighty feel" which we could develop in another video. I've often wondered how to get that feel. If you ever have the chance to make that video it would be extremely interesting. I don't think I've ever seen that topic elaborated on but it's so intrinsic to Trey's playing. Thank you!!

OMG...I just posted this comment and then realized you may have just released the "poppy, flighty" video today!

At the end you missed a minor detail - Trey usually vamps on that last note by playing the same note on the g and b strings and alternates between them (see Clifford Ball Ya Mar video). Even though its still the same note, it gives it a cool feel. Awesome video!

This is incredible and eye opening! I always played the B minor just barring the 7th fret on the E B and G but I like the way the way you play it better. This may be a tricky one but please please take a look at The Curtain With! I'm not an extraordinary player by any means and after a few days of practice I can get the intro down, the playing itself isn't too difficult but there's a lot of great theory to look at in there, and it's just a beautiful song as well. Rock on Ian, hope to see you at a Phish show sometime!!

I love your videos! I have a real hard time retaining the "this finger on that string at this fret" style, but your stuff sticks with me. Which brings me to a question: Can this lead style of 'walking up' the major scale using arpeggios be applied to other progressions or is it specific to this song? Also, can the 4 note major 7th arpeggio be used over any 1; 4; or 5 chord, and the 4 note minor 7th arpeggio be used over any 3; 4 or 6 chord? I guess what I'm asking is: is this stuff transposable, and if so, how?

Hey Stich, I've been practicing my arpeggios alot lately, and most people say to play your arpeggion over the respective chord (amaj arpeggio of amaj chord), but here were playing just the arpeggio of the amaj scale over the chord progression right? Could you explain the theory of this a little bit?
@ScottS9867 жыл бұрын
I got a little confused of when to use which arpeggio over which chord in the progression. Were you talking about matching specific arpeggios to the underlying chords in the progression? When would we use Cm7 which is not in the chord progression (but I know is in the key of A)? Gracias amigo.

ScottS986 he's just harmonizing the chord tones for each note from the Amaj scale. There's really no thyme or reason to when he plays each arpeggio cause he's not looking to play over the changes exactly (just A chord tones over A, F#m chord tones over F#m, Bm chord tones over Bm, E chord tones over E) as much as he's trying to build tension and then resolve it to the one. You're right, all the notes he plays come from Amaj but playing them as arpeggios starting from different degrees of the root instead of just straight A major licks adds some variety

Wouldn’t the g#in the e dom 7 arpeggio be flat and make it g or does it stay the same because were thinking of it just as a emaj 7 arpegg

maybe a mango song lesson? That would be the bees knees.
